The new O.S will obviously have some "out of the gate" issues, but once all is said and done I think it is a solid operating system. I have toyed around with it for some time now and with the exception of a few driver issues (which is always an issue with ANY new O.S.) I think it will be a defintie necessity to any of us who want to progress with the rest of the world in terms of technology and the internet/computing. I am not a big windows fan in general, but seriously once this is fine tuned it is going to be a fun ride.

Hmm, well, at least they still have a chance. Atlanta gets more timely 6-4-3's than any tea has a right to. They've won at least a hundred games over the last decade and half solely because they always seem to get the DP when they really need it.

Except this year.

Well, I think every fan feels that way, since, you know, they don't watch that many games from other teams.

But yeah, the Braves do leave a lot of men on, simply because they've tended to build their offense around home run hitters and Bobby Cox hates to run.

1995: 12th

I don't know if Bobby Cox "hates" to run in the sense that I "hate" broccoli, but clearly he does run if and when he has the right players (Otis Nixon in the early 90s, a fleeter Andruw Jones in the late 90s, and Rafael Furcal in the early aughts).

Anyway, it's a bit sad to see Atlanta's reign come to an end the way it has (or will, shortly), but it was truly remarkable despite its anticlimatic ending. It was inevitable that a team like the Mets or Phils were going to throw around enough cash (at enough players worthy of said cash, this time) to supplant them.

There's a difference between being willing to let bona fide base stealers swipe a base and being willing to RUN. He doesn't do the kind of situational running (hit and run, steals with guys who aren't pure base stealers) that managers who are looking to manufacture runs use.

And, of course, a lot of that is dictated by the kind of players they built the club around (not always, contact hitters, ya know), so they have been limited in their options. But you build a roster around your philosophy, so it's a chicken and egg sort of situation.

In the case of Nixon, that certainly applies, but Furcal is borderline (fast, but not a born basetstealer, I don't think), and Jones certainly isn't a specialty player.

It is interesting to see that Cox has been willing to increase his emphasis on the running game over the last couple of seasons as the team's ability to keep its power hitters has diminshed.

And, of course, a lot of that is dictated by the kind of players they built the club around (not always, contact hitters, ya know), so they have been limited in their options. But you build a roster around your philosophy, so it's a chicken and egg sort of situation.
Yeah, it's hard to know whether the roster is catered to the manager, or the other way around. I'm guessing, with someone like Cox, who's been there since '91, we can probably assume he has quite a bit of input into what sort of player Schuerholz is acquiring.

For the record, if that is, in fact, his philosophy (deemphasis on stealing and/or the hit-and-run), it's the correct one.

Yoda
06-24-06, 12:50 AM

I take this back, actually; Furcal could be characterized as a born basestealer.

What I find more interesting is the larger decline of basestealing in general. The modest increase in basestealing we've seen in Atlanta at times in the late 90s, and again in the last couple of years, is all the more noteworthy as the rest of the league in general trends away from it.

The lack of steals in the league today makes it somewhat difficult to quantify (or disprove) any statement about a manager's affinity or distaste for the running game, as no manager is going to tell someone like Furcal or Nixon he cannot run, and stealing in general is rare enough that just one such player is enough to give a team a middle-of-the-order ranking in steals. Cox might be growing fonder of the steal, or he might just be smart enough not to discourage it in players who do it particularly well. Which is certainly the smart thing to do once you have such a player. Of course, the smartest thing to is not necessarily accquire such a player in the first place.

Yoda,

Andruw isn't a 'specialty' base stealer because he was never allowed to be. He was probably the fastest player in the game when he broke in, but his opportunities were limited by the reluctance to run on the part of Cox and his own low OBP. I think his best year was like 26 or 27 steals (in 97 or 98, I can't remember), back when he was hitting in the 5 or 6 slot. I will say that Bobby's reluctance to run has probably been the right strategy for the regular season, but it has really hurt Atlanta in the post season, when scratching out runs can be the difference between winning and going home.

Purandara88
06-24-06, 01:43 AM
The biggest weakness, however, has been Bobby's disdain for the closer position and his belief that you're better off with control pitchers. Nibbling doesn't work in October, which is why John Smoltz was always their best big game pitcher.

Jones was certainly not the fastest player in the game when he broke in ('97). He was up against the likes of Luis Castillo and Tony Womack (who led the league in steals). And OBP wouldn't be the difference-maker, either, as Womack got on base less often (.326 to .329).

Yep, 27, in a 1998.

Regarding the postseason: it's not that the strategy is good in one context but not another. It's always the right strategy; it's just that it needs the length of the MLB season to even out its inconsistencies. Statistically speaking, it's superior, and gives a team which employs it the best chance to win. But the playoffs are so horrendously short compared to the regular season that they might as well be a crapshoot (notice the frequency with which Wild Card teams manage to win the World Series).

Granted, games are going to tend to be a bit closer in the playoffs, if only because every team you play in the postseason is going to be competent, but baseball's talent disparities in general are much smaller than in any other major sport to begin with, so I doubt that would be enough to change the wisdom of the old Earl Weaver walk/single/three-run homer ethos.

Yeah, but he was a leadoff hitter, so he had a lot more AB's. He had 25 more hits and walks than Andruw in '98, and he had the green light to run.

Like I said, the biggest weakness in Bobby's strategy in postseason play has been his belief that the bullpen is mostly irrelevant and that you win with control pitchers. If you look at the recent WS winners, having staffs that come after you with fastballs is the one common denominator.

Yoda
06-24-06, 03:33 AM
At that point, Jones was clearly faster than either of those guys, his range was unbelievable.
Defensive range is not the prime indicator of speed. Jones' range has as much do to the tremendous jump he gets on the ball, and his unbelievable dexterity, as it does with his speed. This is quite evident today, as he's put on a considerable amount of weight and still excels in the field.

Anyway, I was following baseball intensely at the time, and Jones was never mentioned among baseball's fastest players. Do you have any sort of source or evidence to support the claim?

Yeah, but he was a leadoff hitter, so he had a lot more AB's. He had 25 more hits and walks than Andruw in '98, and he had the green light to run.
25 more is almost negligible over the course of a season, especially when you consider that Womack had twice as many steals in both '97 and '98. To cap things off, Womack tripled Jones' total in 1999, despite the fact that Jones had 17 more hits and walks.

I also don't know how you'd ascertain that Womack had a "green light" to run. I followed the Pirates avidly that season (it was quite a remarkable year for the Bucs) and don't recall anything to indicate that. It was Womack's first season, just as it was Jones', so the safer assumption would probably be that neither had a "green light," which is something more likely to be reserved for veterans.

Jones had one year in the minors in which he stole a significant number of bases (56, with A-class Macon). Womack and Castillo both stole vociferously at every level of professional baseball. The fastest players are almost invariably allowed to run; especially in the minors, where stolen bases are much more commonplace. If Jones were as fast as you'd say, we'd probably have a great deal more evidence of it from his early years.

Like I said, the biggest weakness in Bobby's strategy in postseason play has been his belief that the bullpen is mostly irrelevant and that you win with control pitchers. If you look at the recent WS winners, having staffs that come after you with fastballs is the one common denominator.
Well, I certainly agree that bullpens, which are fairly important during the season, become of tantamount importance in the playoffs. I'm a bit skeptical in regards to the fastball claim; if there is a correlation, I don't think it's above and beyond the general correlation between good pitchers and fastballs, but I wouldn't be shocked either way.

Regardless, the Braves have won just a single title through Cox's tenure, despite contending every year and having a flamethrowing Mark Wohlers to rely on, so I don't think that's been what's held them back.

I think luck plays a greater part in the postseason than anyone would really like to admit. Cox's overall postseason strategy seems pretty sound; he's been to five World Series, won one ('95), lost a stunningly tight one ('91), lost two close ones ('92 and '95), and was swept in 1999. I think he was two or three ballgames away from heading a bonafide dynasty.

Purandara88
06-24-06, 04:49 AM

I've been watching him since he came up, his range is massively reduced from what it was in the mid-late 90s, when he was probably the best defensive outfielder in the history of the game (that he remains far and away the most intimidating defensive presence in baseball, despite losing 3 steps, is a testament to just how transcendent his talent really is).

In any event, range, especially outfield range, is absolutely the best measure of pure speed that baseball has. Stolen bases are far too contingent on other factors.

25 more is almost negligible over the course of a season, especially when you consider that Womack had twice as many steals in both '97 and '98. To cap things off, Womack tripled Jones' total in 1999, despite the fact that Jones had 17 more hits and walks.

'99 was the first year that Andruw really started gaining weight (my guess: 'roids, keep in mind that '98 was the year that really kicked off the modern steroids era).

It's worth noting that in 1998, the year before Andruw began to put on weight and his speed declined, he had 8 triples to Womack's 7 (usually a very good indicator of pure speed).

I also don't know how you'd ascertain that Womack had a "green light" to run.

Managers generally green light 1-2 hitters if they've got the speed.

Jones had one year in the minors in which he stole a significant number of bases (56, with A-class Macon).

Jones also hit in the middle of the lineup at every stage. No one runs as much with their cleanup guy as they do with their leadoff guy.

The fastest players are almost invariably allowed to run; especially in the minors, where stolen bases are much more commonplace.

Not if they're middle of the order guys. The game just isn't played that way.

However, here's probably the best evidence of Bobby Cox's reluctance to run:

Deion Sanders was in the early 90s the fastest man in the NFL, which certainly makes him faster than any baseball player of his time. I think we can all agree he was faster than Tony Womack or Luis Castillo. I mean we're talking about a guy who had 14 triples and an inside-the-park home run in 1992...in 303 ABs.

In Deion's time with the Braves, he averaged a stolen base every 4.1 times he reached base. Tony Womack, during the four most prolific years of his career ('96-'99), averaged a stolen base every 3.7 times on base, a rate approximately 11% higher than that the man who was very possibly the fastest player in the history of the game.

It's not just having a 'good' fastball (Greg Maddux has a good fastball, he just relies on location and movement rather than velocity), it's a question of having guys who can bring heat. Almost all the recent World Series winners have had starting rotations dominated by hard throwers. Why? Because good teams tend to have more disciplined hitters and the strike zone shrinks in crunch time. You have to be able to pitch in the strike zone and get away with it.

You made a very good point about luck, but the truth is, teams are a lot more likely to get lucky when a pitcher tops out at 88 than when he's throwing 96, because they're going to put a hell of a lot more balls in play.

I don't think this is true. His range factor (Assists + Putouts / Gamesp layed) last season was 2.36, within shouting distance of his career average of 2.63. What evidence exists to suggest that he's "massively" reduced? Are you going on casual observation here?

'99 was the first year that Andruw really started gaining weight (my guess: 'roids, keep in mind that '98 was the year that really kicked off the modern steroids era).
The numbers don't bear this out, as '99 was his best season in terms of range factor; 3.12. He followed it up with 2.78 in 2000, 2.93 in 2001, and and 2.66 in 2002, all above his career average.

It's worth noting that in 1998, the year before Andruw began to put on weight and his speed declined, he had 8 triples to Womack's 7 (usually a very good indicator of pure speed).
Triples are a terrible indicator of pure speed. Very few triples are won on speed alone; most involve a misplay by an outfielder or a particularly well-placed ball. Witness Pittsburgh Jack Wilson, who tied for the NL lead in triples with 12 in 2004; not because anyone thinks he's among baseball's fastest players, but because PNC Park sports an unusual crook in left-center field (http://www.diamond-mind.com/parks/pnc.jpg). Other leaders in triples over the last decade include Bobby Abreu and Steve Finley.

Most leaders are fast, sure, but triples contain far more mitigating factors than stolen bases. Also, 8-to-7 is essentially a dead heat for a phenomenon that isn't likely to happen in any given game.

Jones also hit in the middle of the lineup at every stage. No one runs as much with their cleanup guy as they do with their leadoff guy.
He wasn't their cleanup guy in his early years. He batted 5th almost invariably. It's far from bizarre to run with your #5 hitter, especially if he's, as you put it "the fastest player in the game."

Not if they're middle of the order guys. The game just isn't played that way.
Really? Chipper Jones stolen 20 bases from the #3 slot in 1997, and 25 in 1999. Cox let Reggie Sanders (who hit all over the lineup) steal 20 in just 103 games in 2000. And he let Sheffield swipe 18 in 2003. Not overwhelming totals, but we need to factor in the fact that middle-of-the-order guys probably run a bit less because they're getting more extra-base hits, or are reaching base with men already on, both of which essentially rule out steal opportunities.

Womack only played 17 games in 1996, so I wouldn't count that among his "most prolific years." But I'll go with it, anyway.

Making this comparison with stolen bases is misleading, however, because Deion was caught more often than Womack, and the topic at hand is Cox's alleged aversion to the running game. Steal attempts, then, is more accurate. If we measure the times Deion was allowed to steal, rather than the the times he was successful, the ratio drops from 4.1 to 3.0. Womack's drops from 3.7 to 3.1; nearly identical.

This point I mostly agree on. Voros McCracken takes it a step further with something he calls "DIPS" (Defense Independent Pitching Statistics) that basically states that pitchers have next to no control over whether or not a batted ball will turn into an out, and that statistics like walks, strikeouts, and home runs allowed are the best indicators of a pitcher's raw ability.

I don't think it's quite as empirical as you're saying, however. You mention Maddux, and clearly, he's an exception to your rule. The Braves of the 90s saw remarkable postseason success with two of their three big starters lacking an overpowering fastball.

Largely. The truth is he simply doesn't get to the balls he used to, and he has become a bit Edmondsesque in recent years, making a lot of diving plays on balls that at one time he would have caught standing up.

The numbers don't bear this out, as '99 was his best season in terms of range factor; 3.12. He followed it up with 2.78 in 2000, 2.93 in 2001, and and 2.66 in 2002, all above his career average.

These are artifacts of the pitching staffs. Atlanta's starting staff in 1999 included three fly ball/strike out pitchers (John Smoltz, Kevin Milwood and Odalis Perez), and Tom Glavine had trouble keeping the ball down all year (which contributed to his high era that season). Fly ball pitchers artificially increase the range factor of outfielders because they substantially boost opportunities for putouts. They were still getting atypical numbers of fly balls in 2000 due to the presence of Millwood, Andy Ashby, John Burkett (who had long since ceased to be a ground ball pitcher) and Terry Mullholland in the rotation, and 2001 which saw more of Millwood, Burkett, Perez and increasingly fly ball prone pitching from Glavine AND Maddux. 2002 brought back Millwood, a terrible campaign from Jason Marquis, who had NO sinker that year (as his homerun numbers bear out 19...in less than 120 IP), Damien Moss who pitched effectively, but was up in the zone alot.

Compare that to the 1996-98 years, when Atlanta's staff consisted of John Smoltz and a whole bunch of ground ball pitchers (all getting their ground balls).

Triples are a terrible indicator of pure speed.

Only in wierd ballparks. In cookie cutter parks like old Fulton County or Three Rivers, or even relatively regular parks like Turner Field, triples are basically a function of gap power + speed.

Other leaders in triples over the last decade include Bobby Abreu and Steve Finley.

Both quite fast players.

Most leaders are fast, sure, but triples contain far more mitigating factors than stolen bases. Also, 8-to-7 is essentially a dead heat for a phenomenon that isn't likely to happen in any given game.

Jones played his home games in 1998 in cranny-free Turner Field. Womack played his in triples paradise PNC Park.

He wasn't their cleanup guy in his early years. He batted 5th almost invariably. It's far from bizarre to run with your #5 hitter, especially if he's, as you put it "the fastest player in the game."

It's not like he WASN'T stealing bases at all, just that he wasn't getting to run as often as his speed would seem to dictate.

Really? Chipper Jones stolen 20 bases from the #3 slot in 1997, and 25 in 1999.

Compare that to Barry Bonds, who stole 40, 37, and 34 bases in the years between 1997 and 1999, at which point he was no faster than Chipper (though certainly not the post-'roids sloth he has become). And that's for Dusty Baker, who has never at any point been known as a roll the dice manager.

Fair enough.

The was a brief flirtation between the Braves and running (1999 and 2000, when the rosters were built for top to bottom speed), and, interestingly enough, 1999 (214 attempted steals) was the last year they managed to make the series.

I don't think it's quite as empirical as you're saying, however. You mention Maddux, and clearly, he's an exception to your rule.

Maddux is 11-14 in his playoff career, and his career playoff ERA is nearly a quarter of a run higher than his regular season ERA. It is instructive that, for all of supposed success of the Braves in the 90s, the only year they broke through was 1995, when they played against two teams with mediocre starting staffs and free swinging lineups. When the Braves ran up against strong starting staffs and teams with a disciplined plate approach, they invariably were worn down and beaten because they simply couldn't manufacture enough runs or keep their starters in long enough to cover for weak bullpens.

The 12th of July in Norn Ireland is the day where Dave stays in to avoid seemingly random displays of sectarian triumphalism which manifest themselves as men wearing bowler hats marching in ragged lines behind flute bands then getting drunk and urinating in people's gardens.

The weather's too lousy for my usual trip across the border, far away from the insular barbarity of burning a banner with a young catholic boy's (murdered a few months ago purely because of his religion) name on it, which is a rather pathetic way to celebrate one's 'culture'.

The vast majority of people who celebrate the 12th do so in a peaceful manner but episodes like the above only serve to underline my sometime regret at why the Hell I ever came back to this country.

anyway i'm going to have lunch nowHaha, F.E.A.R. isn't scary. It's got a 3 foot girl running around giggling. That's already been done so alas, it's not scary. I bet if you played F.E.A.R. and Doom 3, you'd yell more at Doom 3 then you would F.E.A.R.

F.E.A.R is based on the hopes of freaking you out, rather then scaring you. Doom 3, they just want to scare you. :D

Cleaning up a mess that a customer made. He walked into the door with a large soda sitting on top of his laptop while holding it and a spit cup in his teeth. The soda tipped over and spilled all over him his laptop and my floor, he yelled a cuss word lost control of his spit cup and it hit the floor and splattered chew everywhere. Guess why he was brining in his laptop? Because he spilt soda on it earlier. I pulled out his battery which was dripping and told him sorry but I do not think I can save it, especially if this is the second time. I felt sorry for him but it wasnt my fault :( He got mad and left and here I am cleaning up soda and spit. Must be humpday.

Which one?I just placed an order for an eVGA 7900 GT. One of the best nVidia card manufacturers. Lifetime warranty on all their cards and top notch, "understandable" tech support. Highly recommend you only buy from them. It should be here in two days. :) Yay!

I just watched Enemy of the State. Now I'm going to lay down for a good hour and a half of reading. Ben Bova is just wow when it comes to science fiction.
