01-03-08, 09:51 PM
Oh, then THAT I am good at. :D
I got these:
The Pillars of the Earth (Ken Follett)
World Without End (Ken Follett)
Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky)
The Brothers Karamazov (Dostoevsky)
Heartsick (Chelsea Cain)
The Razor's Edge (W. S. Maugham)
Jane Eyre (C. Bronte)
Can you tell one of my personal goals is to read more classics? :D
All of these were either trade paperback size or hardback. I don't buy the mass market paperbacks anymore. I hate trying to hold them open and squint to read them. I've decided snobbishly that I'm buying only the larger books from now on, and hardback when I can get a good price.
I'm starting Pillars of the Earth tonight. Oh, and Yoda also got me Steve Martin's bio, Born Standing Up, and I went through half of that already in one sitting so far.

My youngest and I hit the local libraries regularly. I have a few favorites and have rekindled my love of being amid stacks of books in recent years.
Most of the books I got today were discounted nicely, and I'm a B&N member now so that added discounts. I'm now on their web site scoping out the huge after-holiday sales. Their classics are half-priced right now. Getting some hardbacks at about four bucks apiece. :)

Contact the Bureau of Vital Records in the state they died in and request a copy of the death certificate.... or, if the death was recent (I believe within the last 6 months), contact the funeral home that was in charge. Be sure you let them know you are a relative... the closer the connection, the better... and you may have to tell a fib to get it... like the deceased was your aunt, uncle, etc. and that you need the death certificate for insurance purposes. Oh, and either place is going to charge you a fee... funeral homes are usually the less expensive of the two....

When you separate it from its more illustrious siblings I suppose The Godfather III is a competent enough crime drama but the problem is that it was always intended to be a part of the series so I can't help but compare it to the first two films. I think it's markedly inferior on every single level.

Thanks, I talked to the mother already and she seemed pretty reasonable and was pretty clear, at least over the phone, about what her kid needs. It sounds like the kid already has a pretty good grasp but just needs to be given some organized coursework to keep it fresh in her mind for when she goes back to school next year. Yeah, that would be another question. That, and the exact date of death. The year was his death was 1978. Those two exact pieces of information, I can get, but I don't need anyone getting curious as to why I am asking, and they have got to be certain with what they tell me. It would appear that I will be charged something, whether they find it all, or not. I already know he's dead. I don't care to pay, to hear that again.
His name was the first to come up in the Ancestry.com. I know it is him, because they had the accurate middle initial, and the accurate place of birth. I wonder if I can trust them. Although I still need his father's name. Damn blasted!
Do I sound mysterious, or what!?!
I'm not trying to be sneaky, or get minds to wondering. I will probably say what this is all about, once I find out for myself.

I was going to suggest you check some of the genealogy sites (Rootsweb and LDS are free) to track down his Social Security number so you can order a copy of his record... sometimes they have the parents and other family information listed. Also, if he was in the military, they would have the names of his parents.
If the man in question was born before 1930, he should be on the 1930 census with his parents. Some of the libraries in major cities have the census on microfilm in their genealogy departments... and all states have a State Archives you can contact that will normally check records for you (for a fee).

I googled the Boston Terrier 'cos I didn't have a concrete idea of what they looked like. They're cool looking, I have to say - a bit like a miniature Staffie (the one sitting beside me is an American Staffordshire so he's got long legs and shoulders as broad as my coffee table).
I wish I could keep a dog but I really can't walk one very far these days. I've had 3 Jack Russells and had to give the last one away because he needed much more exercise than I could provide. They're great dogs, real little Napoleons - my first one's party trick was bounding into a field full of cattle and scaring the livestock.

They're great dogs, real little Napoleons - my first one's party trick was bounding into a field full of cattle and scaring the livestock.
....And he was a miniature. ;)
Boston's are cool looking... Both of mine are females but there is absolutely nothing feminine about them... they snore, burp, and... well... you know... :D The small one seems to stay a bit windy and likes to get under my Mum's chair when she's around and have a bit of fun with her.... 'tis one of the things guaranteed to make her say a few choice words no matter who is around... :p
Boston's ancestors are the old English Bull Dogs and most of the one's I've been around are not as hyper as Jack Russell's... 99% of the time, mine are lap dogs, so you might be able to handle one of the smaller Bostons if you have room for one to run a bit in your house or yard... they have unique personalities and are a lot of company... :)
How did your doggie sitting go?

Found out I'll be seeing Cloverfield two more times before Friday. Test screening tomorrow and employee screening Thursday night.
In that case, you will have seen it three times before anybody else probably sees it once. Why don't you bite the bullet and write a little something? Don't sweat how "professional" it looks, and just make it personal. Also, remember not to gloat too much.

Watch the ones I've emboldened as soon as you can! And if you already have seen them, what did you think?
Also I suggest you track down a DVD copy of 8 1/2 rather than watching it on tape.

Already saw Sunrise and Sunset today. (I give them 4.5 and 4 respectively). As for Seventh Seal, I'll get around to seeing it tonight.
As for 8½ (yeah, I know the keystroke for writing "½" - fancy :p ), the only copy said video store had was VHS. I'll see if it's worth getting on DVD soon enough.

Indeed. However, I still haven't seen it (there's a small matter of getting the VCR to work with the TV, plus getting some privacy to watch). Then I'll decide if it's worth getting a Criterion version.
