Devil's Tower was chosen as the location because Spielberg wanted someplace that had the feel of a John Ford movie, but less recognizable.

There's that John Ford influence again.

John Ford would have had the aliens land at Monument Valley

I still think someone needs to do Music Commentaries where they write their thoughts while listening to music.

Maybe two people could even listen to a CD together.

Or a vinyl record.

Pretty sure John Ford has influenced almost every big-name director whether they are aware of it or not.

I'd be down, that's a good idea. I think doing a Doors album with HK would be quite interesting, he knows a lot about them.

In an interview, Spielberg said that he watched John Ford's The Searchers over and over again while making this movie.

I bet they had fun making it, but I don't really see the point in a shot-for-shot adaption.

Spielberg said that he thought nothing could ever be harder than making Jaws because of all the problems they had shooting on the water, and many members of the cast and crew getting sick, but he said that the last 25 minutes of this movie was even harder.

Yeah, I understand kids wanting to act it out, but I'm not sure why they decided to film it. I guess they just wanted to do it for the experience.

Spielberg was excited to show Truffaut the sets for the final scene, but when he saw the huge sets, Truffaut was overwhelmed by the size of the sets and he didn't react.

When Spielberg was on "Inside the Actors Studio", James Lipton pointed out that this movie used computers and music, and noted that Spielberg's parents were a computer scientist and a musician. Spielberg never noticed the connection until it was pointed out to him.

If you look closely, you might spot R2-D2 and the shark from Jaws on the large spaceship.

gbgoodies
02-03-16, 03:25 AM
Spielberg originally wanted the mothership to be big and black, so it would block out the sky, until he saw the lights of San Fernando Valley at night, and it evolved into what we see in the movie.

The studio wouldn't pay for some of the additional shoots, so Spielberg paid for the scene when the glass breaks out of his own pocket.

Most of the small aliens were played by young girls because their movements were graceful.

The ending is the biggest difference between the original version and the special edition. There's an extra scene inside the spaceship in the special edition, but Spielberg removed it again in the Director's Cut because he felt it was a mistake. He thought it should be left to the audience's imagination.

gbgoodies
02-03-16, 03:44 AM
Spielberg made this movie before he had kids, and he said that if he was to make this movie now, the ending would be different. Roy wouldn't leave his family to go on the spaceship if he made the movie now.

Good choice by Spielberg. Films should definitely provoke imagination instead of spoon-feeding the audience.

The best thing science fiction can do is inspire wonder about the universe, and this film does that in spades. That's part of why I love it so much. Yeah, maybe it's flawed in some ways... I guess. But I don't feel those flaws. It doesn't feel overlong to me, or silly ever. Easily my favorite Spielberg film regardless, because it inspires and brings back a youthful wonder in me, as intended.

She's a stunning beauty.

Swan
02-14-16, 02:27 PM
Though it is hard to read the subtitles and worry about the commentary. So if this is a quiet commentary - as long as we're watching the film - all's goosh in the hoosh.

Rhys
02-14-16, 02:29 PM
Yes. It's quite difficult to do the two.

Swan
02-14-16, 02:30 PM
I'm curious why he had Liv play the mom and one of the daughters.

Rhys
02-14-16, 02:32 PM
Hmm, I guess that is rather odd.

Swan

02-14-16, 02:33 PM
It is a bit. Want to change to an English film? Up to you.

Rhys
02-14-16, 02:34 PM
I think we should continue this. I have some stuff to do after this so wouldn't have time to change now. I like the film anyway. :)

Swan
02-14-16, 02:34 PM
Okay. It is a bit impossible going back and forth though.

Rhys
02-14-16, 02:35 PM
I guess so haha. It's just I wouldn't have time for another.

Swan
02-14-16, 02:36 PM
No worries. This is fine. I love this film.

Rhys
02-14-16, 02:36 PM

Okay, I paused for like five seconds.

Rhys
02-14-16, 02:41 PM

Rhys
02-14-16, 02:46 PM

Personally I remember liking this more than I thought I would. That's all I'll say for now until the end of this revisit.

Anyways, what's your relationship with this film?

I always liked it, but I don't hold it on a pedestal which is probably why. I think people had too grand expectations. It was never going to match a movie like Alien. Instead, we got a very well-done, visually arresting, compelling, albeit flawed piece of science fiction.

I mean, I could be all precious about Alien and rag on this film for not leaving the lore of that film alone, but I just am not precious about this kind of stuff. You can't be nowadays, when EVERYTHING is being expanded on via sequels and pequels and buttquels.

So far the sound design/mixing is really sublime.

Technically, this film is worth it alone. On top of that, it's got an engaging story and a great performance by Fassbender. If you can forget about the lore stuff (which I don't really care about anyway), it's quite a good film, in my opinion.

Seriously. One thing I hate is the excuse people have for bad blockbusters. The excuse is always "Oh, it was just FUN!" like a movie has to be bad to be fun. Nay nay. Why can't a movie be fun whilst also being well-made? And that's what this film is. You don't need to turn your brain off to have fun, but all too often nowadays that's what people think. You can have well-done cinema that is also meant to be entertainment.

Same. I don't know why they did that, I mean I know it's an important part but why does the character have to be so stupid? Why did the snake just like, fall down and attack him?

I want to see a movie where when someone is alone, they literally say everything that's happening.

"I'm walking to another room. My dog just died. Now I am sad.

I will now poor a glass of whiskey... because I am depressed. This is an important moment in my story, because it would cause me to go looking for adventure."
