I watched this for the first time a few weeks ago, didn't have a clue who Rodney Bingenheimer was and assumed the whole thing was a Tap-esque mocumentary.

On that simplistic level it was pretty good. Then it slowly dawned that this quiet, rather sad little man was real.....and it got a whole lot better. ;)

So, if you haven't seen it, how do you know which is superior? ;)

Many actually feel VS is the superior piece of filmmaking. I can't comment as of yet, as I still need to see the original. I will probably like the original better, as well, as I tend to feel that way about most remakes (with a few exceptions). this DVD was in the bargin bin while I was shopping, and I figured for $4.99 USD, what the hell. I do know you tend to know your **** when it comes to that directors works, though, and I am sure the original is fantastic...

Oh, I understand. It's money. Some money grubbing freak sees a film do well overseas, and has to ape the idea to line his own pockets. I agree, it is lame for the most part. I will restate the fact that lots of Americans enjoy films with subtitles, myself included. I don;t think it really has anything at all to do with the language barrier, and everything to do with the above money grubbers.

Sedai and adidasss - mustn't there be something in the licensing that discourages the makers of the original from doing a broader release in the states, or is it maybe the lack of reaction to the subtitled version? I don't know of any other possible detriment to their making money on their own original, and then there'd be no market for the americanized reshoot, right?

ok, city of god was released in the us right? how well did it do? ( if it didn't do very well it proves my point that american general public doesn't like subtitles ) the film looks amazing and the story is explosive by itself, so by all accounts it should have done extremely well, but, did it? ( honest question )
can you tell me what the last subtitled movie was that sweeped the american box office? all i can think of is ( maybe ) crouching tiger, hidden dragon.....
and licensing? that would be extremely unfair to other cinematographies ( seeing as how the US is the largest market ), and the EU's decision would make sense ( if i got it right, the EU is passing a law limiting the amount of american films released ? or i could have just dreamed that....)

The film did $7.2M at the box office, following an opening weekend of $88,292. It's highest ranking in the box office reciepts was 26.

By contrast, Catch Me If You Can did $136.3M, following an opening weekend of $10,700,000.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon did $127.6M. Opening weekend was $663,205 and it reached #4 in the rankings.

American film audiences tend to like to be able to watch the film, rather than read it. However, and this is important: the same is true of French audiences, German audiences, Japanese audiences... it's not that American audiences are stupid or snobs or whatever. All films do better in the country that speaks the language the film is in.

but was city of god even marketed well? i think it has a lot to do with that too, companies that chose to release a film in the us don't market it well, what makes crouching tiger...that much better than city of god? nothing, i think the difference is bad marketing, insufficient advertising and promoting...and you might be right on the french and japanese thing ( germans dub all their movies and tv series ), i can only speak for my country, we have the exact opposite situation, the audience for croatian films barely reaches a thousand ( to be fair, our films suck big time ) ...so we have no problems with subtitles, all the movies we see are subtitled so whether the movie is american or korean, it makes little difference to us....

I don't have any figures on the marketing budget, but based solely on what I saw, it was marketed pretty heavily. I saw a million and 12 ads for it on rottentomoes.com and at least one billboard around LA for it. It was well recieved by those who saw it, but not a financial hit.

adidasss City of God did pretty well here, as an import. The door is open for something to really make an impact: americans have warmed up to action and horror with subtitles. The stage is set. City of God was a bit far-removed from the lives of most of the american movie-going public. It was also a little meandery, story-wise, in the second act. And it had a biopic theme but no one here knows that photog who was the central character. Clear up those problems, make a film in Croatian with English subtitles, and you can change film history for your country and mine. You'll want to toss in some patience too, since the american public is a little bigger than the Croatian - my CITY (and the county around it) is twice the population of your entire country. Consequently, there are plenty of media already aimed at us over here.

Just as well us Scots are so well educated in subtitled films!!!

Rather amazingly we have a number of European film companies with offices in Glasgow, most notably Sigma films that produced Wilbur wants to kill himself and Young Adam starring Ewan McGregor.

We are a real cinema city, we had the most cinemas of any city in Europe for many years before those damn pesky multiplexes came along.Thankfully we still have the GFT( Glasgow Film Theatre ) which shows mostly sub-titled films, and was the first place in Glasgow to show Reservoir Dogs and El Mariachi, Tarantino did a brief Q&A at the cinema for Reservoir Dogs, but I missed it! ok.....those are not good arguments and you know it,most people don't go to see films that are close to home, if that were true, people would not have gone to see the titanic or say, the matrix, not to mention lord of the rings and a billion other films, but they did so in milions, the meandery part is your personal opinion, and as far as the biopic part is concerned, it isn't a classic biopic because the story is not about the photographer, he is only the narrator, the objective observer of the story, the story is about a gang war that broke out in the favelas of rio de janeiro in the 70's, and come to think of it, my impression was that there's plenty of that going on in the US ( black and hispanic people in the ghettos lead fairly similar lives to those of black people in the favelas no?)
so my question is still unanswered.....i'd still go with marketing or simply the fact that the general american public is not used to seeing "foreign" films.....something that will undoubtedly ( or hopefully ) change one day......

ok.....those are not good arguments and you know it,
They're not arguements submitted as alternatives to your suggestions. I'm saying that CoG, as an example of the american public turning out to see a "foreign" film, had a few issues of it's own that can also account for a less-than-stellar financial outcome.

...most people don't go to see films that are close to home, if that were true, people would not have gone to see the titanic or say, the matrix, not to mention lord of the rings and a billion other films, but they did so in milions,
yes, because those films have very relatable central characters. CoG starts out and ends with a very relatable narrator, but his through-line takes a back seat through the entire middle section of the film.

the meandery part is your personal opinion,
See above where I walked you through it. I can get the felt board out and some hand puppets if you still don't get it, Aristotle. (see, I can be a smartass too.. isn't this fun?)

...and as far as the biopic part is concerned, it isn't a classic biopic because the story is not about the photographer, he is only the narrator, the objective observer of the story,
"Classic" or not, we lose the emotional through line and the most sympathetic character when we lose sight of the narrator. This could have been worked around in a few ways, but it wasn't. As a result, people didn't walk out of the theaters and immediately insist that everyone they know go see it. That's called "word of mouth" and it's as crucial for a financially successful film as marketing. For illustration, see Dukes of Hazzard, which had a ton of marketing and publicity and was choked to death the second weekend by word of mouth.

...the story is about a gang war that broke out in the favelas of rio de janeiro in the 70's, and come to think of it, my impression was that there's plenty of that going on in the US ( black and hispanic people in the ghettos lead fairly similar lives to those of black people in the favelas no?).....Yep, and how many of the characters in the film did you see heading to the cinema? I'mna go out on a limb here and say that the box office bank of, say, Lord of the Rings was not generated from the 'hood.

so my question is still unanswered.....i'd still go with marketing or simply the fact that the general american public is not used to seeing "foreign" films.....something that will undoubtedly ( or hopefully ) change one day......

Yes. Your tone went from conversational to accusing me of trying to slide my personal opinion through as an objective fact. I didn't. The fact is NOT EVERYONE believes that City of God is "flawless". In fact, you're the first person I've heard use that word to describe it. Due to the fact that there were (painful as it may be for you to face) a few things that could undermine the wild popularity you apparently imagined for the film, it's not just my personal opinion that it might not be the most popular film ever. Reality bears me out on this.

Totally - in the sense that you're comparing totally different films:

'Small' movies and 'Big' movies, if you want me to spell it out.

Again.

I think you're missing my point. It's all very well to compare City Of God to Titanic from the point of view that they're both dealing with an 'alien' subject but that's where it all ends.

Small....Big....Apple....Orange.

People went to see Titanic in their droves because it was a big budget elephant of a film which offered escapism, romance, tears and huge stonking big buggers of special effects....not gritty urban realism and kids with guns.

Paddy & Patricia Public would have no interest in it - hence the small takings.

Totally - in the sense that you're comparing totally different films:

'Small' movies and 'Big' movies, if you want me to spell it out.

Again.

I think you're missing my point. It's all very well to compare City Of God to Titanic from the point of view that they're both dealing with an 'alien' subject but that's where it all ends.
did i say it didn't? you assumed i did, my point was exactly that, nothing else.....

If you want the last word then be my guest...
the end...:)

I was nothing but pleasant to you when you announced you hate Slovenians, after I'd just said one of my best friends is one.

I was nothing but pleasant to you when you tried to pick a fight in the religion part of the arguement thread. "Send a photo" I said.

What is Memories of Murder about?

I'm not famliar with the actual events so I can't say how true it is, but it is 'based' on the investigation behind Korea's most notorious serial killer. What makes it fantastic is that it is a surprisingly fresh take on the tried serial killer/police hunt storyline. Gone are what you would expect to see in a story like this (gritty crime scene investigations, tracking closely on the 'scent' of the killer, exploitive murder scenes, psychological probing of the killer/victims) with those elements being replaced by calm pacing, absolutely gorgeous cinematography (the Korean landscape never ceases to amaze me), inept police work and even humor.

The best way to describe it is just to say it isn't your normal serial killer flick, it is a good deal tighter than that. I highly recommend it and I know I'm not the only one round these parts who really digs it.

The Long Goodbye and Kiss Me Deadly.
I guess I was in a not-quite detective thriller mood.

Not quite detective? These films are absolutely, completely, detective films. Both leads are private eyes by trade, and go about detecting and solving a mystery. In fact, Kiss me deadly is considered one of the definitive detective noirs of the original noir cycle, and is used as an example of hard boiled detective noir in many texts, including stuff like The Film Noir Reader and Christopher's Somewhere in the Night. Why would they be considered not-quite detective? The long Goodbye was Altman's stab at detective-noir, and a damn good one. it is, and always has been, a detective film.

Why would they be considered not-quite detective? The long Goodbye was Altman's stab at detective-noir, and a damn good one. it is, and always has been, a detective film.

Well, I'm not the author of The Film Noir Reader, and perhaps because of that I'd consider neither to be quite a Hardboiled Suspense Thriller.
Kiss Me Deadly (1955) has a decidedly Sci-fi bent, and besides explodes the conventions of Classical era (I'd say 1930 to, surprise, 55) Detective Thrillers much like Touch of Evil may have done for Noir. The whole film is about how the mythology of the hardboiled he-man is now obsolete, and how fists and grit just aren't enough to solve problems anymore.

The Long Goodbye (1973) similarly dodges the conventions of the Detective Thriller genre (I'd say it's more comedy, but that's me). I mean, Elliot Gould's (A hardboiled ELLIOT GOULD!?) unsuave, unsexual Phillip Marlowe is nothing like the Bogie of yesteryear. His most commonly occuring line is after all "It's okay with me," something any previous Marlowe incarnations probably would have had gay sex onscreen before uttering. We watch him buy catfood for Christ's sake!

Really they're very similar movies in this regard. One ushers in the Post-classical era of the genre, and the other probably jumps the gun on the Postmodern era. I actually wrote a paper on just that.

Anyway, it should also be kept in mind that I never said that either movie was not a detective thriller, just not quite. I meant specifically in the Classical sense of the genre; but it was just an offhand comment.

Also, with the price being little more than a rental, it was a hard one to turn down. I thought it was pretty good. Too much melodrama took a few points off for my girlfriend and I. I am thinking Taccy will find the same issues with the film, from what i have seen of his taste for this sort of thing. Just a couple of directorial missteps in an otherwise powerful film. Oh, I will be picking a copy up.

I feel the same about Firefly in some ways. For instance, the episode "Out of Gas" is, as you said, a timeless , wonderful piece of sci-fi writing. Then again, so is BSGs "Flesh and Bone". Meanwhile, if we are having trouble deciding which sci-fi show is the best, times are good for sci-fi.... :yup:

The Criterion edition of 'Fanny and Alexander' by Ingmar Bergman. It's nicely presented...I had a feeling I would appreciate the film, which I did immensely

I would encourage anyone to watch the television version rather than the theatrical release....there is a grave difference.

I got these. However i had to get 'Returns' again on R4 because the R2 is cut slightly and so WB took Burton's commentary off. R4 thankfully has the same covers as R2 and the £ to Aussie $ exchange rate is excellent.

I actually only bought it at all cos I liked the look of the girl behind the counter in HMV in Craigavon...

"If you spend £20 you get this for £4.99, you gorgeous man!" she chimed, saying possibly something different at the end of her sentence but I wasn't paying attention.

Alas, I'd only spent £19.99 so wiggled my eyebrows, which did the trick.

I'm beyond help...

The spirit of the beehive (El espiritu de la colmena) - sounds like a sweet film.

The sea inside - curious

Central Station - I wanted to see another Walter Salles film as I enjoyed the Motor Cycle Diaries but I want to avoid 'dark water', also its only £5.99 on play.com

One, Two, Three Trilogy by Lucas Belvaux - again curiousity sake after reading reviews.

One, Two, Three Trilogy by Lucas Belvaux - again curiousity sake after reading reviews.

I really enjoyed these movies a lot. Very clever idea, and well made. For anyone who's never heard of this project, it has a few parallel stories that sometimes overlap characters. All set in the same time and place with basically the same people, but each of the movies is in the style of a different genre: One is a thriller, Two a romantic comedy and Three a melodrama.

Unfortunately the trilogy got almost no theatrical play here in The States. Oh, well.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0001K2K3E.02._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg I bought the R2 4-disc collector's set over a year ago.

Thrilled to hear you enjoyed it. That is the exact same set I am getting, should be here in a couple of days.

It's unfortunate they did'nt get much play over there. I have suggested some films to friends in America and they have informed me of the same, they are played on the East Coast but never quite make it further West.
