Been a while since I was on here and since I bought DVD's, but I got two a few days ago.
1. Spirited Away. One thing that I can say about myself is that I'm not the biggest fan of anime. There is 2-3 shows I like in that style, but until this film, I never found an anime movie that I liked. In all honesty, I like Spirited Away so much that I would probably rank it in my top ten favorite animated films of all-time, and trust me when I say it has some stellar competition!
But yeah, that's why I bought it. It's that good! That, and it was $10, which is a steal!
2. Spider-Man: Homecoming. It was available for $13, I love the MCU, and Tom Holland is definitely the real deal with being Peter Parker and Spider-Man (no offense to the other two, but Holland is a perfect balance of the two personas, while Maguire was a stronger Parker than Spidey and Garfield was vice-versa).
Sad to say, I found those two films plus a couple games that I bought while trying to find my mother a gift (which I did find, of course - I'm not a bad son, I promise)!

In commemoration for the 100th anniversary of Bergman, lots of his films was in a cheap price, so, guess what!:

4th & final season & boy did this show drag out. Worth it though as it’s exceptionally good.
I don't know whether it dragged out necessarily, I just think they were quite short of fresh ideas for the last two series. Series 1 and 2 were the best; 3 and 4 have weaker plotlines and it felt like Saga and Henrik's own lives and back stories were carrying the show – the way they introduced Henrik's character is one of the most creative, clever things I've ever seen, and his issues added a lot of new energy at a critical point.

I knew I should have edited my post, but was too lazy. This is my post on the subject on a different website, which explains properly what I meant.
“Season 1 was released in 2012 on dvd. Season 4 finally released on dvd this year. Heck of a journey with this show. Three years between seasons 3 & 4. Only dedicated watchers like me would have stuck with this show over 6 years.”

Question why would you buy and pay for international shipping on DVDs, couldn't you buy them in America?
Stirchley
07-25-18, 02:43 PM
That was me tearing it open. Arrived in fairly good condition considering it crossed the Atlantic.
Amazon.co.uk usually releases British DVDs, such as this, before America does. Often long before. Ditto for many European dvds. Surprisingly, the price is often less, including postage, than buying the same thing from amazon.com. No clue why this is so. I often suspect that amazon.com jacks up the prices, which surely is illegal? The DVDs never cost more than what I would pay here. One does need a multi-region DVD player though.

Big Man Japan - I found it at a local Dollar Tree so I got the film for only $1. I got the film because I am a huge fan of the film's star and director, Hitoshi Matsumoto. I've been a fan of his since his days as a part of Japanese comedy team Downtown and when he co-hosted with Downtown cohort Masatoshi Hamada the music interview show Hey!Hey!Hey! Music Champ from 1994-2012. He also does commercials for a job search engine in Japan called Townwork.

In the span of 6 months the price of the Grindhouse Releasing DVD of Massacre Mafia Style (1974) jumped from $25.00 to at least $50.00. Even though it produced a better return than an investment in gold would, I just can't bring myself to drop $50 on that movie. Duke Mitchell's son released a "family edition" version of the movie - which is just a VHS transfer of the film on to DVD. I can always buy a digital version of the Grindhouse Releasing version of the film if the family edition quality is really ****ty, but I'm a huge proponent of physical media and just need to own a DVD copy of this movie.

For a while now I've wanted to see the Italian produced The Valachi Papers (1972) (spoiler alert: it's not that great). But I spotted a Charles Bronson Blu-ray collection which includes: The Valachi Papers (1972), The Stone Killer (1973), Breakout (1975), and Hard Times (1975) that was too good to pass up.

I bought all three Toy Story films and the new IT film for about $21 bucks altogether (new) on eBay. I am moving to a new place with my fiancee, and we both picked out some movies to "break in" our new home. She chose Toy Story as a whole (which is cheating, but I love them too) and I chose the new IT film.

Just bought apocalypse now and aliens on blue ray. Why? 1 They are great films. 2 I couldn’t find a digital version of aliens that wasn’t the special edition. The blue ray has both in one so best of both worlds. Also similar scenario for AN. I own the redux version...needed the original. That movie needs to be owned.

From Walmart because it's one of my top five favorite Miyazaki films, even though I don't care for the way Disney altered the dub (butchering several of Hartman's lines) back in 2010, which is carried over for this release. Ah, well... It'll do until I can get the 2003 DVD for a decent price, or better yet, a Blu-ray with the unaltered dub.

I have been wanting Sin City on Blu Ray for awhile. Dogville, LA Confidential and Catch Me I liked but I'm seriously concerned about the re-watchability of Dogville. Not the most uplifting movie but interesting. Feast, eh, I needed more gore in my library. Basterds is ok and Skyfall I have never seen (never been a Bond fan) but for .99 on Blu Ray, what the hell, that's about half of the change in my cars ashtray.

Why?
Because those who know me, know I love folklore and fairytales..
The story was inspired by a myth from the ancient Chinese Taoist classic Zhuangzi.

I've been going through a yakuza movie deep dive recently. The problem with going through this genre is that alot of movies never got a DVD/streaming release in the states. This has led me to patronize sites that I assume are peddling bootlegs, but if you want to do a serious retrospective of the yakuza genre, the few yakuza films that the Criterion Collection decided to pick up and the few Kinji Fukasaku movies streaming on prime are not enough. I actually found out soon after I purchased Yakuza Law: Lynching! that it's receiving an Arrow Video (who is doing the Lord's work) DVD/Blu-Ray release at the end of May.

Different countries have different zones. European movies don’t play in American DVD players & now you know American ones don’t play wherever you live.
Buy your mother a multi-zone DVD player (not expensive) & she can play any dvd from around the world.

I kept using the word “zones” when I meant “regions”, but the explanation is still the same.
My multi-region DVD player cost $40 & is the best thing I ever bought as I still buy DVDs from England.
Your mother could also play the DVDs on a computer & opt for the region she needs. A computer lets you do this a few times.

JensonStirchley's suggestion is a good one, but if you put the make and model of your mum's dvd player in a search engine and look for a hack you might be able to change the region that way. On most players it's simply entering a code on the remote control and choosing the region you want. Selecting 0 will make it play anything. That's all a multi-region dvd is.

I already own The Big Lebowski but the transfer should be a good one so I gotta double dip to revisit and revisit and revisit this film in the best way possible...
I haven't seen The Patriot in forever (if ever). It's been so long so I barely remember it. I remember some scenes but I can't recall if I ever did watch it in its entirety. So this is a blind buy of sorts, but with the kind of movie it is it should be perfect for the 4K/HDR and Atmos soundtrack treatment!

I had been wanting to get La Haine for a while now, and saw it at a second-hand store. Rebels of the Neon God has also been on my radar for a long time, but it's not one I was particularly looking for. I noticed it and figured it was worth grabbing. Wild Strawberries is a movie that I actually bought a year or two ago when a video store went out of business, but the copy was scratched and wouldn't work. I was really glad to see it, and for $20 I thought it was a steal. I'm a huge fan of Bergman, so I'm really excited about getting that one. Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable is one of those exploitation cult classics that I really enjoyed. I remember watching 2 or 3 of the Female Prisoner Scorpion movies online before, though not in great quality. I know I saw the first one all the way through, and it was a very interesting movie. One of the other movies in the series wasn't that great, and then I can't remember much about the other one. Now, they had two of the Female Prisoner Scorpion movies, the second and this the third, but I noticed on the second one that it wasn't by the original director, and this one was. So I didn't want to blow my whole pay check on every interesting movie they had... So I decided to go with this one because I think it's really one of the good ones. I think part 2 was the one I was a little dissapointed with. It's interesting that it has a “very rare” sticker on it. I didn't realize it was all that rare or anything... but anyway, I guess that's cool. Meiko Kaji is an awesome Japanese actress, so I'm really looking forward to watching it again.

Bill's Dirty Shorts: A Collection of Bill Plympton's Naughty Cartoons has a surprising large amount of material on it. I took a chance on this one, because I've never heard of Bill Plympton or this movie. I watched some and they're quite interesting. Many of them are violent and sexual, but the animation itself is pretty incredible and there's a wide range of different types of work. I haven't finished watching them all yet though, but one theme that's stuck out to me is the Persons with Confused Priorities. For example a guy is sky diving, and he's getting close to the ground, but he notices his shoe lace is untied. So he tries to tie his shoe lace first before pulling his parachute, and doesn't finish in time, and splatters on the ground. So I've been thinking a lot about confused priorities in my own life... Like when a client at work asked me a question and then the door bell rang and the phone rang all at the same time, and none of my co-workers were around to help. I was about to get the client what he wanted first even though the guy at the door was pressing the bell again, and the phone was ringing. I thought of Bill's Dirty Shorts and then considered my three tasks, and put them in priority, answered the phone first, then the door, and then the client. Thank goodness for bill or I might have gotten the client's thing first since he was insistant and right in front of me, and I'd have missed the phone call and the guy at the door might have given up waiting. Not really though, I'd most likely have still prioritized them correctly, but that is what was going through my mind at the time.
Fair Game (1986) starring Cassandra Delaney was another one that I took a chance on. It looked like it had the potential to be interesting. It's an Australian exploitation film about a woman living fairly isolated and getting terrorized by a few strangers. It's the kind of thing that makes you worried about trying to live a quiet peaceful life knowing that at any time someone could come along and destroy everything you care about. I was a little surprised by intensity of the scenes with nudity. They looked like the kind of thing that would really strain an actress. Overall it was a pretty decent movie, not great, but entertaining. There was only one time where the acting was so bad that I cringed a little, but I can easily forgive that since the rest of the movie was pretty good. It was a scene where Delaney was talking on the phone and not leaving any time between her responses for the person on the other end to have actually been talking. The movie had a nice build up towards a pretty terrific climax at the end, and finished on a strong note.

I bought Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Deadpool 1 & 2, and Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I bought them on Black Friday and meant for them all to be given as gifts for my nephews and little sister ('cept the Deadpool films which were meant for my wife). It appears I'll be keeping them all though. No real complaints.
I bought Peter Rabbit two weeks ago. I hope this will be a good watch.

Funny how things work out sometimes.
Anyways, I was only moving the bin across the shop as per a request from the manager.

I made out really well this year for Christmas. Normally, my family doesn't really know what to buy for me, but, this time, it seemed explicitly learned that I like movies:
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (DVD)
- Harry Potter 1-8 (Blu-Ray)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Blu-Ray)
- a 9-pack of Hammer Horror films (DVD)
- a 4-pack of Martin Scorsese films (DVD)

I had to get Color Out of Space. Having seen a couple of older versions (The Color Out of Space and Die, Monster, Die), how could I pass up on Nick Cage and the sketchiest director around, Richard Stanley and Tommy Chong, doing Lovecraft. My narrative is that I was going to see it in the local theater, but it only was there for something like 12 hours. By the end of the same week, it was released on Blue Ray and 2 days later it was marked down to half price. I got it, in my possession. Yes, it is as bad as you might expect. Nick Cage chews the scenery and everything else in sight. The rest of the cast acts like they are reading their lines from a teleprompter for the first time. Because the Color causes things to decay, that seems right somehow. It was the best $12.99 I have spent since the beginning of plague-time.

Uncle Vanya from 1963 starring Michael Redgrave and Laurence Olivier. I bought it because it was filmed as a theatre stage production would have been performed, and as a person who was not around when these acting greats were treading the boards, it's about as close as a live stage performance i am going to see.

Aside from some seriously cheesy, bad horror movie collections, the most recent movie I wanted specifically was Color Out of Space. It was in and out of the theater before I got there and released on disk within 48 hours, put on special about a day after that. It's supposed to be a Lovecraft story but the challenge is to duplicate a color that nobody's ever seen before. They picked glowing magenta, which I have seen. They also had Nick Cage, almost seeming like a conscious parody of Nick Cage. Given that Lovecraft's original story centers around an extraterrestrial color that makes things fall apart, it all seems right, because the movie itself falls apart. It's definitely on my late night rotation, a worthy addition to The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake or Plan 9.

I filled up my movie stock today. This is what I got:
Sea Hawk (1940) - Because I've never seen an Errol Flynn movie before and this one looks cool.
Funny Face (1957) - Can't say no to Audrey Hepburn.
Vertigo (1958) - I constantly see it get praised as one of Hitchcock's best. And considering his track record I have high hopes for it.)
Cleopatra (1963) - The pairing of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. They were magnificent in Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?
Frenzy (1972) - The most intriguing of Hitchcock's later works.
Rollerball (1975) - I think I'll have a rollerball with this movie!
Animal House (1978) - Due to John Belushi's hilarious performance in The Blues Brothers.
Kramer Vs. Kramer (1979) - Looks like a powerful Dustin Hoffman drama.
The Airplane collection (1980, 1982) - Has the kings of spoof movies as the writers and directors, plus Leslie Nielsen of course. The second doesn't look as good, but still has a strong cast, like the nice addition of Rip Torn.
The Smokey And The Bandit trilogy (1977, 1980, 1983) - The first two look like good ol' Burt Reynolds fun. The third seems terrible though, so I guess we'll see.
Once Upon A Time In America (1984) - I'm a big fan of the Dollars trilogy.
Dune (1984) - It's directed by David Lynch (one of only two of his films I haven't seen) and it has Kyle MacLachlan's first role.
House (1986) - The only horror movie I could find I really want to see.
Talk Radio (1988) - Oliver Stone is a master at political intrigue.
Ghostbusters & Ghostbusters II (1984, 1989) - Believe it or not, I've never seen either in full. Now is finally the time!
The Two Jakes (1990) - As soon as I saw Jack Nicholson's name on the cover, I knew I would buy this one. Plus I loved Chinatown.
Strange Days (1995) - I've heard a lot of great things about it, and it looks like it's in the same vein as Minority Report (one of my favorite Spielbergs).
The Woodsman (2004) - Difficult, but fascinating subject matter. Kevin Bacon also seems like an excellent choice for this role.
I just ordered The Human Condition from Criterion Collection.

I've been wanting to watch it for so long, and keep trying to stream it online but can never find a working link. I've never bought anything off the criterion collection website before, so this is a first. It should arrive within 18 days. Can't wait. It cost me $65 including shipping, and it's a 4 DVD box set with tons of bonus features. This is the full nine and a half hour version.

The third one is terrible, but the first two are lots of fun.

Come and See
It's a Criterion pre-order, but I adore this film. To me it's the best and most honest depiction of war I've ever laid my eyes on. Haunting, visceral, brutal. Even though it's an act, the depiction of war in this film is so real it often makes you feel uncomfortable. It can be at times traumatizing, so precede at your own risk.

Terrific movie.
It really is a great movie. It doesn’t overplay it’s hand and I think it’s all owed to Streep and Hoffman.

I definitely need to watch some Kobayashi. I haven’t watched any of his films yet and I hear he really is a great director.

Got this from Walmart because I became interested in it after seeing the trailer before a theatrical screening of My Neighbor Totoro.

Pre-ordered this from Amazon because it's one of my favorite films of 2019.
