Today I bought The Maltese Falcon, Children of Men and Young Frankenstein. 3 for £20 at HMV.

Nah, i'd seen it plenty before, bought it before the exam i had on it, then took it back after because i was skint. Hated the movie at first but slowly fell into liking it.
Sinny, what you think of the current 3 for £20 at HMV? There's so few in it i want, though didn't see Maltese Falcon, been eying that up on normal DVD, if only i can find a third along with Children of Men to replace my copy  That or wait for them all to be in the sale after the promotion.

The Maltese Falcon wasn't even in the 3 for £20 section. I found it in the M section with the 3 for £20 sticker. Lucky, eh?
There are a few films in the offer which I haven't seen but were really tempted to buy today. Films like The Prestige, Stranger Than Fiction and Babel.

K, got a bulk today. In 3 for £20, got Performance, The Apartment and Maltese Falcon 2 disc, as well as Death Wish, The Crying Game, Lawrence of Arabia, Sunset Boulevard, Harvey, The Third Man and Marathon Man. Several were prompted from the Afi Lists, if it wasn't obvious.
Death Wish stands out ;)
(It topped the 'Laughs' list didn't it?)

Time travel with a gold pocket watch.
Had to get it when I saw it today.
I used to love the series when I was a teenager.
I was hoping there would have been more than one season but sadly, the main actor died in a stupid game of Russian Roulette with a blank gun back in '84.
I have never seen that series :nope: It never came here at all :nope: was it good? :)

I have never seen that series :nope: It never came here at all :nope: was it good? :)
I did like it way back then as a kid but when I do get around to watching it now I'm sure I'll find it a little hokey and very dated since it was from back in '83-84.
Pretty much everything I see from back then seems a little corny when I watch it now (as much as I loved Greatest American Hero I do roll my eyes and groan when I watch it now too).
Still, like Time Tunnel or Quantum Leap it was a TV series about time travel so I was immediately hooked.
Where Quantum Leap could only use history within Sam Beckett's lifetime the Voyagers could go to anytime before 1970 and only a glitch in the Omni time-piece made the Voyager first meet up with the kid in 1983. The idea being they wanted to get the kid back to his own time (just like Sam Beckett) even though their time machine shouldn't allow that period to be travelled to.
It was also a pretty educational show if I remember correctly.
I think there was usually a segment at the end with the kid talking about the history of the historical characters or situations in each episode and then a plug about reading history books at the library or something.
I think I just drooled an itty bitty bit on my keyboard. :yup:
And yeah, Escape...
You can burn it next time I'm over.
Less than 5 bucks so why not I say. Could be ok cheese.

Wasn't a heck of allot to it but I really enjoyed that one. For me, it was tense through most of it anyways. I'm waiting for it to drop to about 10 bucks though. Not that desperate heheh.

Highly under-rated in my opinion, I don't know why so many people still haven't seen it.

Loved the original Death of Superman storyline when it came out in comics 20 years ago so I'm really curious as to how they will condense a year-long story into a 75 minute cartoon.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3495/supdoomsdayfightje0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Despite the fact that they have different voices in this one than the Superman and Justice League animated series' had and not occuring within the same DC Animated Universe continuity, I do have high expectations for this one (although the previous Superman animated movie, 'Brainiac Attacks' did suck quite a bit).

What else is in there? Unfortunately Holy Mountain is the only Jodorowsky movie that I'd want to watch more than once (I've seen that, El Topo, The Rainbow Thief, Santa Sangre and an early one, I think called Fando and Liz). Hope you like the rest of those more than I did (El topo is decent, Holy Mountain was the only really awesome one though, and by far the most over the top).
I picked up the Branagh Hamlet a couple weeks ago. Haven't gotten to it yet though. I'm tempted to go get that Criterion disc of Naked, but I'm always torn between buying movies I already like (that) and ones that I can't rent and just want to see really badly (9 Songs is currently high on that list). Hamlet I could justify because I read a lot of Shakespeare these days and that's the fullest movie version as far as I know, so I'll probably be watching parts of it a good deal). In general it's harder for me to justify buying movies even if I like them though, I just don't rewatch movies enough to really make renting a less cost-efficient means, except for a few.
Tacitus why'd you get a Korean disc of Sonatine? What's so great about it (other than that awesome cover)? I picked up the US disc of Zatoichi which also came with a bonus dvd of Sonatine because it was cheaper than just buying Sonatine. Figure that out.

Apparently the quality of print is much better (like the ltd edition of Zatoichi, compared to the regular release) though it hasn't arrived yet so I can't confirm. It's also got a critic's commentary, dunno if it's subbed, some photos and a 'personal message from Kitano', whatever the heck that may be.
The cover is fantastic though, eh? :)
EDIT - I keep meaning to get the Criterion Ed of Naked myself, making do with the largely vanilla Aussie R4 release because stupidly the film isn't available in its homeland.

Well, i didn't end up getting the box set (it's the same as R1 with El Topo, Holy Mountain, Fando and Lis and some soundtracks i believe) but just got Holy Mountain since found it somewhere half the price and already had El Topo. Definitely agree that it is his best work, i didn't get too much from El Topo, maybe i was underwhelmed having just scene Holy Mountain however i enjoyed Santa Sangre a heck of a lot, his second best. Alas, they are all i have seen, and all i probably will since can't find the others readily available.

Does it include the original version I saw at the theatre? Before they recut it to keep people from throwing sodas at the screen? (Yuck, what a mess.)
I actually threw my soda at the screen once, in my reckless youth (okay, I was nineteen, not that young). It was at the end of Jim Cameron's The Abyss, when the big thingie surfaces, miraculously saving everybody, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's character meets Ed Harris in the center of the bright sunshiny day and says, "We should all be dead." That was the point that I stood up, shouted, "Yeah, you should be!" and lobbed my soda at the screen like a concession stand Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. Then my friends and I stormed out of the theater, muttering about hours of our lives we'd never get back. This would have been more impressive an act if there were more people in the theater at the time. Besides the three of us there was one couple at the back of the theater, and I think my antics only woke them up or briefly halted their make-out session.
ANYway...

You know, I haven't even watched it yet. It's definitely my least favorite of the series so I was hoping that since I haven't watched it in years I may be able to find some redeeming quality that I simply missed in my youth.
Couple that with the fact that it was sitting in a large crate at the grocery store, accompanied by a quantity of similar horror genre failures, with a $4.99 price tag.
How can I lose in this deal, says I to myself. I shall one day soon let you know how I answer.

Honestly? Just the once here too.
It's like one of the car accident videos you have to watch before they let you learn how to drive, only played out over two hours and starring Ben Kingsley.
That's not to say it's not excellent, it reminds me of the best of Shakespearean tragedy and it has a wonderful humanity to it, even if most of that humanity ends up either shot, poisoned, asphyxiated or spiritually broken by the credits. Plus the acting is uniformly top-knotch, considering how relentlessly morose it is it'd have been very easy for it to slip into melodrama. It's a testament to the talents of Kingsley and Jennifer Connolly that they managed to maintain such a high note of tension without cracking. And then Ben went on to play the villain in Thunderbirds. Hey ho.
And I don't think I've ever seen Iranians portrayed as sensitively in any movie since.
I should probably wrap this up before it becomes a luvvie paean.

By random chance. I used google image search for a pic of Gohatto for another thread and happened to click on the amazon one. When I visited amazon later, I was greeted with a screen showing me that I had last viewed Gohatto and that 7% of people bought The Return instead after viewing that page. Remembering that this film has been highly recommended by adi among others and seeing that it was less than four quid, and that I needed to spend £2 to get free delivery on the other stuff I was buying, I bought it :) Hope it's good.

Amelie
I love this movie (Amelie). In fact I must say it's one of my favorites. It uses just enough CGI to make it funky, but the actors and set design is stunning. Such an original concept as well.
I also love how it proves that a film can be "artistic" and a popular commercial success.
To those aspiring filmmakers out there, this film is proof that you don't need to sell out.
Bye for now

I bought Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on DVD along with the interactive DVD game. I love the Harry Potter series and I think it was a wise purchase to get it along with the DVD game. I tried it out for a bit on the WB's official (http://www.warnervideo.com/harrypotterdvd/) Harry Potter DVD site and it was very entertaining, but I have yet to play it with anyone else.

Resident Evil.....really....ok? I don't plan on buying any of the Resident Evil movies (I rarely buy movies any way I just watch them on TV) on DVD but I never thought the movies were that bad nor very good but ok movies to see once. The new Resident Evil movie looks nice but I probably won't watch it until it comes on HBO or Starz and that'll be awhile.

Well I don't want to give you bad impression about those movies you might like them only the first one is kind of ok,but Resident movies don't deliver much excitement and horror as the Romero movies and their remakes.

The Conversation (dir. Francis Ford Coppola, 1974)
I have to write an essay on this discussing the films use of Sound and Music.
It's a shame that I found it to be one of the most boring films I've seen in a while, because the essay's only 2000 words. Whether I can be bothered to do it before the last minute is another matter entirely...

Rob Zombie's Halloween - unrated, of course.
The first "R" rated movie I ever saw in a theater, was "Halloween" in 1978, and it was one of the earliest DVDs I ever bought. So, the latest, was a nice "must have" companion DVD.
The Kingdom (2007)
It is a great action movie, as long as you don't take it to seriously

I haven't seen Robin of Sherwood, but this new one is a lot of fun. It's got a good mix of action and comedy relief, and the actor who plays the Sheriff of Nottingham is fantastic, so joyously evil!

Ah, you should check out Robin of Sherwood... the stories incorporate one of the old Celtic Gods named Herne and is probably one of the best versions I've ever seen. It aired in the 80's on Showtime in the US... and, if I remember correctly, won a lot of awards for originality, costume, etc.... Michael Praed played Robin in the 1st season and Jason Connery (son of Sean) in the 2nd....
