View Full Version : What was the last DVD you bought and why?
the reason there is two is because when i made this thread i thought the new dvds thread was about new dvds that will be coming out soon so i made this one thinking it was the only one then for some reason it got popular even though the other one is still there.
Don't worry about it, I post in both. :D

The last DVD I bought was Fire Walk with me. Took me ages to get someone to order it. But I finally got it. Cost me a fortune too, for such a bad quality DVD.The only feature on it is PLAY.Great movie though, one of my favourites.

He might be an incorrigible Luvvie, he might have lost his Irish accent (though he moved at 9 so I can't really blame him), he might have voiced that awful BBC dinosaur series (though I guess it helped pay the mortgage so I can't really blame him) but I've always liked Brannagh.

And the verdict on the Metallica film?
After watching it, I had lost any remaining shred I had left for these whiney, pissy, malcontents. When Lars was pissing about trying to sell his (terrible) art collection, getting drunk and smashing champagne glasses, I wanted to yak.
"Wahhhhhh, I'm a filthy rich rock star, wahhhhhh"
I'd send him a box of Kleenex, but I am sure he has special-wecial, softy-wofty, monogrammed Kleenex for his tender wittle nose.
And Hetfield... All these years me thinking he was a big scary biker. Awwwww, did he fall down and skin his knee? He will only be able to work for 3 hours a day for the next six months, because he is sensitive, and needs recovery time. Awwwww.
Yeah....I didn't like that one. ;)

The restored cut of Sam Fuller's The Big Red One (1980)
The reconstructed The Big Red One is definitely a better film than the old Studio cut. The extra forty-plus minutes of footage adds so much depth as well as more of the surreal Hell of battle to Fuller's last great work. And the DVD is terrific, with a good commentary by Richard Schickel (who produced and supervised the rebirthing project) as well as an excellent documentary, including interviews with the cast - I could have listened to three hours of those actors recounting anecdotes about Sam and Lee Marvin.

The Criterion Collection edition of F for Fake (1973 - Orson Welles)
The last bit of genius Orson Welles finished, this inventively fun and outrageously deceptive docu/mockumentary about forgery and narrative truth. Anyone who enjoyed Werner Herzog and Incident at Loch Ness last year should rush right out and find F for Fake. Very good 2-disc package too, with an audio commentary track with Oja Kodar, an 88-minute piece about all of Welles' unfinished projects, and a documentary about art forger Elmyr de Hory among other extras.

If you were in America, you could simply watch re-runs of the sitcom "One Day at a Time", which aired on CBS starting in 1975. Mackenzie co-starred on that show as the eldest daughter Julie, from '75 to '83...though with a year off in the 1980-1981 season, as she was in rehab trying to get off hard drugs (it didn't take then, though she's apparently been clean for years now).
http://highway61revisited.com/images/McKenzie%20Phillips5.jpg http://www.younghollywoodhof.com/drina/phillips.jpg
Mackenzie was cute in American Graffiti and was delightful as that character, but as in the poor quality of the Graffiti sequel, you are in for a bit of a disappointment as she ages.

Tomorrow I'll be getting Michael Ritchie's hardboiled pulp classic Prime Cut with Lee Marvin & Gene Hackman (first time available letterboxed!!!) and the new Casino SE. And be careful if you go to get Casino, as for some fu*ked-up reason they've gone to the trouble of a pan&scan edition of this 2.40:1 widescreen Scorsese film as well.

SE. And be careful if you go to get Casino, as for some fu*ked-up reason they've gone to the trouble of a pan&scan edition of this 2.40:1 widescreen Scorsese film as well.
But doesn't pretty much any movie that comes out nowadays even with a ratio such as that come in both widescreen and full screen versions? I stopped assuming that and now look very closely for that word widescreen in the back of the dvd after i got shafted a couple times. http://www.movieforums.com/community/images/smilies/yup.gif
Well, I didn't buy it, I found it on my desk when I came in this morning (thanks boss!!)
Star Wars : Episode III - Work print
For a "bootleg" it's damn good quality, if not widescreen, which is a drag. But still, Episode III, on DVD! No shakey cam-corder version here...I don't like piracy, but hell, I just walked in a found it a' sittin' here! Gift horse...no look in mouth....

Cool thread. Yesterday I bought East of Eden, James Dean's first movie. There's a collector's set out with all three of them, but I already own Giant and Rebel Without A Cause... although RWAC is now out in a 2-disc special edition!
Some other recent buys have been Keeping Up Appearances discs 1-4, National Lampoon's Van Wilder (not for myself - although Ryan Reynolds naked makes it worth the buy), Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Seed of Chucky, Hellraiser: Deader... and there's been a slew of others before those. Blade: Trinity, House of Flying Daggers, Advice From A Catepillar, Golden Girls: Season Two, and some others.

Shade's not a bad little film at all, far better than that awful CONfidence that came out around the same time, for me. ;)

Much Ado About Nothing is one of my favorite movies… the first time I watched it, I was supposed to be doing a school project and thought I could do both… needless to say, the project was late… which was out of the norm for me… so, my teacher asked me why… I told her what happened and she started laughing and gave me an extra day to finish… :D

I'm watching it right now. MAAN is one of the most joyous, uplifting and good-spirited films that I've seen in many a long year. Add the beautiful Tuscan countryside to the sheer enthusiasm that the cast seem to have for Shakespeare (even 'paddle-my-own' Keanu) and it's approaching the perfect feel good movie. Branagh is to thank as much as The Bard himself.
It came out just too late to help with the Shakespeare section of my degree (though Ken's Henry V was faithful enough to aid an essay or three) but I watched it in the cinema in Liverpool soon after release.
Nestling for a couple of years in a tatty video box, I'd forgotten just what a warm, kindhearted film Much Ado About Nothing is. :)

Million Dollar Baby because Swank, Eastwood, and Freeman are in a league of their own in this movie. The script was full of heart and even managed to slide in some very dry humor. Rightly deserved to beat my favorite director, Scorsese, at the Oscars.

Finally got round to buying " Sonatine " by Beat Takeshi, Tacitus recommended it, and we have similar taste in films. I have seen snippets, but never the full movie.
Also bought " Fitzcarraldo " as recommended by Samsonitedelialah, again I've seen little bits here and there, but never watched the film from start to finish, so cheers C for the review recently, it made my mind up!
Picked up " Sling Blade " in the sale, I missed this film on general release, but I dig Billy Bob Thornton as an actor, and how can you not admire the man when he was married to Angelina " Big Pouty Lucious Lips " Jolie? :randy:
Oh Angelina, me, you, candles, and a bath tub full of jello!!!!
Red Jello, in case your wonderin'! :yup:

Same thing, here. Henry V came out while i was taking a Shakespeare course - one of the hardest of my university career. Brannaugh does great things with Shakespeare.
MAAN has one of my favorite Shakespearean speeches: Beatrice's "oh that I were a man, I would eat his heart in the marketplace" regarding whoever has lied about Hero. And Brannaugh's scene with the lawn chair by the fountain was hysterical. He seemed to be channelling Chaplain.
