I hate supermarkets and their cunningly-placed promotions. Just think of the amount of food I could have bought if I hadn't been suckered into this!
Three frozen chickens, that's how much!
Still, Close Encounters is one of only 3 Spielberg films I can watch without grimacing at least once. ;)

Supermarkets can be the worst place to buy entertainment items, like DVDs and books. Although the one I go to has some good $9.99 DVDs, but it's all old stuff, so that's a good price. But for new stuff - yes, Close Encounters is old, but it might be a new special DVD - everything's usually in the $24.99 and up price realm. You can get it cheaper somewhere else (except Barnes and Noble).

I thought £12 for the Blu Ray edition of Close Encounters (2 discs worth) was pretty good value. I've got the 1998 DVD special edition somewhere which probably isn't that different but, what can I say? I'm an idiot. :D
I must admit to getting the majority of my DVDs from local supermarkets. New releases tend to be a couple of quid cheaper than the entertainment chain stores and they always seem to have tons of films in the £3-£6 range - with a bit of digging you can unearth a few gems. Where they fall down, of course, is when you're after something other than mainstream Studio releases.
Unfortunately I just can't resist walking down the DVD isle when I really should be spending my cash on food...

yeah, i'm also guilty of that :o
Once i went to my local Supermarket Tescos for something for lunch. Knowing me i went to look at the DVD's, saw Hot Shots! £3!! I walked away saying to myself "i'm not buying it, i have bought enough DVD's!" i walk back to the DVD section and buy it

Holden, somehow you don't strike me as the "Bridges of Madison County" type. How did you like the movie? In particular, Eastwood's very different role? (Streep is always good, IMHO, so I won't bother to ask you how you liked her.) :)

And took back my copy of Seventh Seal because it was still in the wrap after about a year, and instead got the The Essential Bergman Collection (with Seventh Seal, Persona, Wild Strawberries and Autumn Sonata). Not bad for extra fiver, even if means have two copies Persona, was still cheaper than buying Wild Strawberries alone.

Brilliant. LOVE this show. Watched the entire series this week and I think I'm going to watch it all again tonight and tomorrow. The second-to-last episode, "Holiday", that's my favorite, the one that builds to the eating of the 'turkey leg' - I'm laughing just thinking about it! The whole series is fantastic. The first series is the only one currently available on R1 DVD. Pity.

MASSIVE respect Holden. Peep Show is by far the funniest thing (save for Brass Eye) to be on British TV for last age. Most people noticed the slump in Series 3-4 when it moved from being a purely cult show to mainstream but currently Series 5, after 2 shows, seems to be picking up the pace. The student following it has over here is pretty impressive, the only thing i've seen touch it was the release of Hot Fuzz. Well glad you like this, and that it's being seen over the sea. How thick is wall?

I liked this but never watched it too much, can't really get the same Mitchell and Webb humour on the Beeb as you do on Channel 4. I'd avoid That Mitchell and Webb Situation which was their first sketch show, before Peep Show. It's pretty bad, unfortunately. And wouldn't actively recommend their feature film Magicians past curiousity- it's not as bad as the reviews say, but nowhere near Peep Show.

I think I avoided this one for a while because I feared the first-person camera would be too gimmicky or get repetitive, but it's organic and allowing the audience to hear the thoughts of Mark and Jeremy is genius.

I'm glad that our American buddies can appreciate the best British comedy of the last decade. Peep Show is absolutely fantastic and i would have been dissapointed if the show had not expanded into the US market.
Holden, by referring to the 'turkey leg' episode you have got me laughing as well. Its completely farcical but it is one the funniest things i have seen outside of film.

I just bought the "I'm Not There" DVD for a variety of reasons. First off, I love the film based on the life, dreams, and many faces of Bob Dylan. Secondly, One of my biggest pet-peeves is that most action-drama movies do not have a Gag-Reel in the special features which i love. I know they made mistakes and laughed, why not show them? This DVD did. They also have very interesting commentary, backstory, and featurettes on Dylan's life and the actors journey. Also Cate Blanchett does a phenomenal job, far better than i thought, and really pulled through in the film a must watch.

Comes A Horseman: (Season Five) This episode finds Duncan chasing a man named Melvin Koren who turns out to be none other than Kronos, the man in charge of the Four Horsemen, a sinister gang of immortals responsible for untold chaos and destruction. Cassandra has been waiting a long time for a shot at him, and it looks like she might yet get her chance.
Revelation 6:8: (Season Five) It's looking like Kronos is going to get his old gang back together after all and to make matters worse, they've got technology on their side this time around. Will Kronos and the Four Horsemen bring about the apocalypse or will MacLeod save the day?
Homeland: (Season Four) MacLeod gave an old flame of his a bracelet years ago and she was buried with it when she died. He returns to the land where she was buried and soon becomes involved in trying to stop a murdering immortal, the same one who was responsible for the death of his own father.
The Samurai: (Season Three) Cultures collide when Duncan MacLeod has to help out a relative of a Japanese samurai master from his past.
Indiscretions: (Season Six) The past comes back to haunt Methos and Joe when, as the title implies, their indiscretions come back to haunt them. Morgan decides it's time to take action against Methos and so he kidnaps his daughter.
The Gathering: (Season One) The series debut finds Duncan MacLeod living with his lady friend, Tessa. An immortal named Slan Quince shows up and soon Connor MacLeod has to convince Duncan to give up domestic bliss and join the battle.
Methos: (Season Three) It becomes obvious, when the bodies start pilling up, that Kalas is after Methos. Duncan knows that he can't let Kalas take him down and usurp him as the oldest immortal and so a race begins between MacLeod and Kalas to get to Methos first.
The Return Of Amanda: (Season Two) Amanda returns to the scene and surprises everyone involved by announcing that she is going to retire permanently. Duncan soon clues in to the fact that she's up to something that she doesn't want the rest to find out about...
Duende: (Season Five) A Spanish Immortal named Octavio Consone who MacLeod once trained with over a century ago in hopes of mastering an elaborate sword fighting style. The two men meet again, this time with MacLeod having to defend a dancer who Consone is intent on taking for his own.
Timeless: (Season Four) A pianist named Claudia Jardine (Rae Dawn Chong) doesn't realize it yet but destiny has decided she should become Immortal. Walter Graham, a man responsible for training many Immortals in his time, takes her under his wing and kills her so that she may be reborn but MacLeod knows that this will cause problems...
Legacy: (Season Two) Amanda's mentor is murdered by an Immortal named Luther and so she sets out to avenge her death though the reality is that Luther will probably kill her. She goes to Duncan and he decides to take her battle as his own thinking that he'll have a better chance at coming out alive.
The Lady And The Tiger: (Season One) MacLeod runs into Amanda again, by chance, at the circus. MacLeod soon finds out that her last partner has broken out of prison and is out to kill her and of course, MacLeod wants to help her not realizing that there's much more to her plan than he realizes.
Deliverance: (Season Four) MacLeod goes to France and starts wreaking havoc when Methos tries to stop him, almost getting his head chopped off in the process. Methos doesn't want to have to take MacLeod's life, but his actions are becoming increasingly more insane and he may soon have little choice.
To Be: (Season Six) The series wraps up with this two-part episode where MacLeod is forced to save Amanda and Joe Dawson by laying down his life. He gets a supernatural look into what it would be like with him out of the picture from Fitzcairn, an Immortal who has been dead for three centuries.
Not To Be: (Season Six) Fitzcairn shows MacLeod how it will all end and MacLeod does not like what he sees... saying anything more would be spoiling it.

I saw it was a TV-movie a few months back, but I missed it and bought the DVD. I have to say it was good enough to make into a Feature.

The Andromeda Strain was the very first Michael Crichton novel ever adapted for the big screen. It was released in 1971, directed by Robert Wise. It was released on DVD years ago. You can find brand new copies retailing for $14.95, but if you search a bit you can find it much cheaper than that.

Lured in again by the promise of cheap quality ( where have I heard that before? ) or a bargain ( I'm Scottish afterall! )
todays 3 for £20 were, Day Watch ( not worth the money soon to be the world's smallest frisbee ! ) Them a horror/ slasher/ thriller and Ghosts of Cite Soleil, which boasts the real life City of God on its' front cover.
I'll let you know about the other two once I've watched them, already posted a review on Day Watch.

Region 2

The R2 art seems more grim, which isn't something I felt when watching the film (if anything it made me want go on holiday to Bruges).
Won't stop me buying it (although I missed the last few minutes as I had to leave the cinema, I loved the rest of what I saw), I'll just have to find the R1 DVD sleeve online and print it off. Tut tut.

Oh yeah, after seeing Indy 4 I bought the trilogy boxset. Not that I haven't seen them hundreds of times on TV already mind you.

They were both adapting official poster art. I don't care for the one with the ice cream cone and the swan much either, but at least that DVD cover more or less matches the poster concept. For the R1 DVD they've taken the pieces of the poster with Farrell and Fiennes but ditched Gleeson. That second poster there, which is done like a postcard with bits of blood staining it, is wonderful. I've printed THAT out for my DVD.

I haven't found any of the series to be weak, I loved them all. And yes, I did watch series five Friday night and it was more continued brilliance. After the final episode of series four, the jilting at the alter and all, I thought, 'That's it, they've built perfectly to this moment, it's time to say goodbye.' But then series five is just as great as the others, and they've obviously got steam for even more!

That's interesting, after Series 2 there were petitions for more, and afterwards, most fans i know were pretty disappointed with how it was being diluted for a wider audience. You must be first i've met who's thought it's all been as good as the first 2 series.
Loved the perfect rounding of Series 4, was big surprise when saw 5th Series being advertised, almost didn't bother with it- considering how they'd left it but think they've ended this this one with a great end to carry on
Ive bought a few dvds recently,
Dragon wars - I thought it was ok, the CGI was fantastic but the story and actors let it down for me. If a bigger production company made this film I think it would of been allot better.
Paradise Lost - I really enjoyed this film, it reminded me very much of Hostel but it was definatly worth getting.
Devils Rejects - This again is a awsome film, I thought it was great it is a sequal to "House of 1000 corpses" which I have not seen.
The last DVD I bought was Ultimate Rambo Collection - Tottally worth it I am a massive fan of Rambo and I watched the all the films in order. The fourth film "Rambo" is brilliant very gorey and it has a good storyline. Very good film.

Don't buy a new release from there! You'll be paying like $23.99 - overpriced! Go to Target or Best Buy. Steer clear from Barnes & Noble too!

Oh, I already own it. It sits in the bottom of my toilet tank, with the little blue cleanser thing resting on it. I'm waiting to get the special edition until after I start a compost heap out back.

The Omen remake (remake being the word),. I have the other four Omen films and wanted to know what the differences were between the first one and the remake - very little as it turns out. At least I only £3.00 for it.

North & South: Book 2
Fat Actress
I Know Who Killed Me
The first three I bought because they were cheap and I've had a mad crush on Kirstie Alley for years. I Know Who Killed Me I bought because, well how could I not? It was only a fiver and I can't think of a single reason that I wouldn't want to see a film with reviews that over-the-top bad.

Nice. Hellraiser is my favorite horror movie, along with Alien (which I actually probably prefer a little bit more than Hellraiser).

That's how I feel.
I think the first K-9 movie is real cute, and I've never seen the others. For 1.98, I will, soon enough.
