It's not exactly a movie, but it is very cinematic - A DVD set of the old The Outer Limits episodes from the mid-60's. Sci-Fi has rarely been smarter than these episodes, which I am savoring. Being an anthology, each episode had a different cast, subject matter and setting. They had top-drawer writers, each doing a condensed 54 minute episode on something weird. Cinematography was done on film, excellent quality black and white, now scanned for hi-def. The low budget and lack of any significant FX meant that the "creatures" were "rubber-suited-monsters" and the music repeated in the episodes, but it didn't matter that much because the were mainly metaphors for the spiritual or psychological condition of the human characters. I've seen episodes sporadically over the years, but having this set put them on my current radar. Great stuff.

I bought the slasher film Trick and the psychological horror film Unsane on a whim. I haven't bought DVDs and Blu-Rays in awhile and I feel like I want to start building up my physical collection again. I found them both for $2.50 (total) at Dollar Tree. I was surprised to see them. They aren't major films or anything, but I didn't expect to find them for that low.

Since it says "DVD" and not movie, I'll do another one of a TV series - Kolchak, The Night Stalker a complete DVD set. It was a 70's, fairly short lived TV series about Karl Kolchak, a nosy newspaper reporter who, week after week, stumbles into something scary and not part of the world as we know it according to the experts on reality. Of course, nobody believes him except the folks watching the show. "Debbie wanted to be successful. She should have settled for being alive".
Darren McGavin (The Christmas Story) was terrific as the actor/narrator, Kolchak, armed with a film camera, a typewriter and a great rumply suit and hat. Allegedly, the show inspired the X Files. You can also stream it with commercials, but I like the no-ad DVD version.

With such minimal FX, that was what TOL's writers did best....take something mundane and turn it into an existential threat. I'd be pretty darn freaked out if the tumbleweeds became sentient.

Today, it's Twister. I have a secret like for weather movies. I've been way way too close to a couple of tornadoes, and sat through several hurricanes, so watching one from my easy chair is a cheap, low risk thrill. I won't even have to saw up fallen trees after a cinematic twister. This one has the added feature of a co-star, Jamie Gertz. She's not much of a star, but her by-line includes extreme wealth (like 3.2 billion). She just does movies for recreation.

Twister is one of those movies that I almost always end up watching when I'm flipping channels and I see it's on.
When I lived in Texas, there was a tornado sighting near where I was living at the time, so I got in my car and I went out to look for it. I had never seen one in real life, and I was curious about them. Fortunately for me, I wasn't able to find it.

I've been way, way too close to two of them, but saw neither. I was too busy running and screaming to do anything other than head for shelter.
Number 3 was a very minimal tornado (40 mph), surprisingly at the beach in NC. Seeing the clouds, I looked around, it got windy all of a sudden, my hat took off and I realized that sand, leaves and my hat were going around in circles. I looked up and clearly saw the funnel, for all of about 5 seconds. I saw the hat going around in circles and then it came down and I retrieved it. After that my kids called it the tornado hat.

That sounds kind of cool, but in a scary way, almost like something out of a movie. It sounds like you were lucky that it was a mild tornado and you weren't hurt, but at least you got a cool story to tell about it.
When I went looking for the tornado, I didn't want to get close to it. I just wanted to see it, and then turn around and run away from it. But that was back when I was younger and stupider.

The Outer Limits, Seasons 1 and 2. These mid-60's sci-fi-wierdness episodes are amazing in how well written and acted they were. FX are fairly cheesy, but you realize that the FX (mainly the monster of the week) is just a visual manifestation for the spiritual or moral condition of a character or creature. The mood of the show was considered to by hypnotic at that time, and I would not argue with that.

Last Dvd I bought was a European copy of The Keep (1983)
And why is because it never got an American dvd release and Michael Mann likes to pretend it doesn't exist
The inventory at SwapADVD is typically as bad as your local thrift store's, but sometimes, you'll get lucky.

Majesty is certainly in close contention for the best, and outside of the fact that Lazenby was far from the best Bond, I am fine if someone claims it for the top spot.
There are only two or maximum three I'd personally consider better (Goldfinger, Thunderball, Casino Royal, maybe Goldeneye) and it's close

This film deserves a remake.
The movie feels incomplete, but what's there is really haunting and unique.
It would make a pretty good miniseries, the books also had several sequels that were interesting.
I got three Kino blu rays today:
My Favourite Blonde
Road to Utopia
Road to Zanzibar
I don’t believe I have seen Road to Utopia before, but I have seen the other two.
I went to the mall and got three more blu rays. I got:

So annoyed. So pleased I found this, but what I failed to do was register the clearly-written fact that it’s in Italian with French subtitles. How I failed to notice this as I’m always so careful is beyond me. I don’t speak Italian & my French is insufficient for subtitles.

I haven't bought any physical movies in nearly 20 years. Physical media repeatedly becoming obsolete kind of ruined the feeling of owning things. DVD replaced VHS. HD replaced 480p DVD's. Now 4K is replacing HD.
Digital is less clutter. I mostly use streaming services and sites that host movies. Renting movies can be a good deal too. A rental is $4? To make owning the movie worth it, you'd have to watch it 4-5 times.
Most movies I watch just once. And if I rewatch them, I usually rewatch them 5 years later, to where I've forgotten much of it and it feels completely fresh.

I like owning some disks because it's a psychological need sometimes, to be off line, not dependent on a streaming service that's like an IV in my vein, therefore, I have a sizable number of cheap DVD disks and sets.
My latest acquisition was a good, 1957, British thriller, The Curse of the Demon, AKA, The Night of the Demon. The original version was considered too horrifying for British audiences and had a scene cut, but that's back in this version, since, by contemporary standards, it's pretty tame. This is a fairly smart, noir-black and white movie, with cheesy FX. Most bump scares are just that and prove to be false leads, but when the climax comes....well....in the spirit of the time.....you'll find out. Or at least you will if you get the unexpurgated version of the movie.

I just purchased JOHN WICK 4 on Blu-Ray followed by CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and a movie with Adam Driver titled "65" which was a cheesy knockoff of JURASSIC PARK.. Physical media will never be replaced. It can't be matched in terms of quality.
If you have a cheap setup with small tv etc, then maybe all you need is streaming services or digital content. But any larger setup really shows the amount of compression that the streaming services use on the content to get it to a size that can be piped into millions of people's homes. The trade off is pretty horrible.

Ah, the 70s...
I enjoy David Fincher quite a bit and one of my favorite movies from Fincher was "ZODIAC: The DIRECTOR'S CUT" but the one movie I never saw from him was from 1999 titled "FIGHT CLUB" and I watched it last night and all I can say is it was quite a unique movie with definite societal issues on display and interestingly enough, Brad Pitt appraoched Edward Norton about a "FIGHT CLUB 2" and he turned it down and it was probably for the Best.. Some movies are better at being "One and done" and don't need a sequel and I'm not exactly sure where they could've went with a sequel to this??
I purchased and watched "ORPHAN: THE FIRST KILL" on Blu-Ray today and if you've never seen this movie?? Please watch this!! What a great twist in this movie and Julia Stiles is simply AWESOME!!

Do it. I was shocked how good Puss and Boots 2 was. It's one of the best movies of the decade to me. Everything worked. I didn't think much of Puss in the Shrek franchise, never saw the first Puss and Boots. Man. They make him so damn cool and actually heroic. But that's because the villain is one of the coolest villains I've ever seen. Even the animation is cool and unique. I have no clue why they went so hard on that movie but I am glad they did.
As far as me I bought The Searchers, Dunkirk (didn't own it) and Casablanca on blu ray at Barnes and Noble. Found them for cheap.
I realize it's been a few years since I bought some Criterions so I decided to go on a binge

It's The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection, or at least the ones with Basil Rathbone as Holmes. I recall seeing those a long time ago and they're really an enjoyable waste of time. There's a murder, Holmes is on the scene, Watson bumbles his way around being likable, and then Sherlock solves the crime, much to the chagrin of Scotland Yards, who, as always, is clueless.

It's the third one of a set (I had the first two) - the third installment of "Dark Film Mysteries", AKA Film Noir. These are the cheesy ones like The Limping Man, The Hoodlum, Jail Bait and Lady Gangster....3 disks, 13 movies.
I sold some movies that I had duplicates of or wasn’t going to watch again and got $208 store credit at the Beat Goes On. I then bought the Lars Von Trier Europe Criterion trilogy, Night of the Demon Severin blu ray, Beyond the Door Arrow blu ray, and the 2 disc Fistful of Dollars dvd.

You need a bigger house:p:) I recently got rid of a bunch of DVDs for the same reasons, no room to store them under the TV cabinet which is a small space...and I wasn't going to watch them again anyway.

The Outer Limits, seasons one and two, the 1960's version of the show. As for why.....TOL was the best, bleakest, dreamiest, nightmarish sci-fi anthology ever done. It had a bleak voiceover intro by the mysterious Control Voice that was both gentle and ominous, stark black and white filmed cinematography, noir-styled imagery, excellent theatrical acting, characters who had no idea what was happening to them (being dragged off into psychic hell) and a plot line resolution that left you with the feeling that you'd escaped this fate just barely. You get to go on living or being sane, but just until the next episode. The cheesy, rubber-suited monsters were metaphors for the horrors of life, bringers of fear, "Until the next time when take you to The Outer Limits".
Season one was the best. Season two was not quite as good, but still better than almost anything else on TV.

It was a triple blue-ray set with Twister, Poseidon and the Perfect Storm. I mainly bought it for Twister. Having been way too close to several tornadoes in life, including being about 200 feet from one, and being somewhat traumatized by that, I prefer the cinematic version of that special thrill but I do like the thrill. Twister did it OK and had a better twister than the Wizard of Oz.

It's Rod Serling's other show, Night Gallery, the first episode among 98 in a DVD set. I recall seeing some of them a long time ago. This episode has Roddy MacDowell and Ossie Davis. MacDowell is a spoiled, insufferable rich kid wanting to inherit the family fortune and having carefully murdered his father. Ossie Davis is the "manservant" in the mansion who's fed up with the spoiled son. Given the type of series it was, something tells me that the father is going to get his revenge, in this case, by means of haunted paintings.

The Last Movie (1971)
I've long wondered about that movie but have never seen it. Sometime ago when I first got into film I watched The Hirehand and was amazed by it. I did some reading about it and found a small list of other films made under the same movement:
'After the success of Easy Rider (1969), Universal Studios hit upon the idea to let young filmmakers make semi-independent films for low budgets in hopes of generating similar profits. The idea was to make five movies for low budgets (one million dollars or less) not interfere in the filmmaking process, and give the directors final cut. The other movies were:'
Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970)
The Hired Hand (1971)
The Last Movie (1971)
Silent Running (1972)
Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)
Minnie and Moskowitz (1971)
Taking Off (1971)
American Graffiti (1973)
I've only seen the most popular ones on that list (American Graffiti, Silent Running) and Two-Lane Blacktop which I really liked and of course The Hired Hand. Have you seen any of the others?

I finally bought a DVD of Arsenic and Old Lace because you never know when you're gonna need to rewatch it. Of course, I immediately lent it to a friend, since we'd just gone to see a local production of the play and loved it.
Then again, I also own it via Prime Video, but I can't lend that out quite as easily as a DVD, so now she and I can both watch it. :D You'll notice on my profile that it's one of my top ten movies (top five, really). And for good reason.

Cool---I definitely will. They are in fairly good condition as well.
well that good they would be worth more :D
So I was running out of space on my shelves, so I took 10 blu rays that I wasn’t planning on rewatching to The Beat Goes On to sell. They took 7 of them but were only doing store credit so I got $90 store credit. I then used the store credit to buy four blu rays. I got:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (40th anniversary edition)
The Ring steelbook
Phantasm 1&2
Pet Sematary

Oppenheimer. I saw it in the theater and the story is part of an interest theme I've mainly pursued in books....The Bomb. Historically, Robert Oppenheimer sits ad the crux of the Manhattan Project, working with a diverse group of physicists and military to make The Gadget. I've read several books on the project and could not imagine not seeing the movie however good it was. Being a big project with a lot of players, the movie oversimplifies the whole thing in spite of 3 hours, but it's as good as time and viewer sophistication would allow. Books worth considering include American Prometheus, The Making of the Atomic Bomb, and of course, the horrifying Hiroshima.
Being such a consequential story, I could not imagine not having a copy for the shelf. It arrives tomorrow.

Given that I mainly know him from Curb (Plus seeing him in Leaving Las Vegas and Two And A Half Men), I got curious about an older show Richard starred in back in the 80's.

That's it, cept for Lord of the Rings.
I was looking for a thread like this and i didn't see it!!
The Movies Begin was the cherry on the top of my last little spree, i got it because it has the oldest films, my whole aim as a physical media collector at this stage is to get ALL the silent films available. I figure it might take about two years to complete this mission with getting 300 to 500 dollars worth per month.

Interesting collection, i've of course seen Deep Red and never saw it under that name before!! The Basement one was a coveted one for me when i was collecting early 80's slashers, think i saw it on YouTube once. SwapADVD eh? Might check that out, do they have a silent film selection? ... It's ok, doesn't seem doable for Canadians, maybe something similar is out there for us Northerners.

I may have seen all of those, with the exception of Severed Arm. The only two I have any kind of distinct memory of are Silent Night, Bloody Night and Don't Go Into the Basement.
They are my kind of films, kinda crummy production values, wonky pacing, somewhat nonsensical....but I think they are both pretty good and unique in there own way, in particular Silent Night, which I recall really liking at the beginning of the pandemic.
But definitely a bit of buyer beware going on here. For most, they are probably forgotten for a reason.

Oppenheimer - I've been fascinated by this story for a long time, had a family member who worked with "Oppie"'s brother. This movie is the big treatment of the story.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter - A decent prequel to the English part of the Dracula story....good production, good acting, not bad.
SwapADVD eh? Might check that out, do they have a silent film selection? ... It's ok, doesn't seem doable for Canadians, maybe something similar is out there for us Northerners.Oh well. It's essentially an online used DVD store: you get credits for shipping DVDs to people who request them, which you can then use to make your own requests. It's a good way to find movies that are not streaming anywhere and/or collector's items. Hopefully, there is a Canadian equivalent!

I'll start with Silent Night and Don't Go in the Basement (advice I assume someone doesn't follow). They look like fun for the whole family.

The Rear Window. It's an old, now-and-again Hitchcock classic. I love that elaborate alleyway set where the window is, the good music and James Stewart as the laid-up reporter with the camera that plays such a role in the plot.
