Even though i think it's declined since the first two series, there were several laugh out loud moments 'i wanted you to think i was a real person but i'm not' and 'i think i'm trying to kill her in particular, but generally series felt most uneven; only one i've not got on DVD.... yet.

I completely disagree. I think all six seasons are equal in quality, all brilliant, though if I had to choose one single favorite episode it'd be the fifth one of series four.

That's interesting, as most my friends have same consensus; since it came out of cult hiding in Season 3 it's not been as good. Better than most comedy out there but lacking in comparison to 1 & 2, lost some of it's edge

All time favourite bits have to be Jez's interview where he makes the face and the bathtub convo where he laughs out loud at his thought.

Well I bought it on your recommendation, UF. I was desperately looking for a decent thriller that i'd be able to get on the cheap. That fitted the bill. My finger was also contemplating clicking buy on Used Cars, which i've never seen. Sort of regretting that now. Oh well, next batch I guess.

Used Cars is just a great bad taste, screwball comedy. It's well written and has a great cast all giving (in my opinion from what I've seen) career best performances. Russell is an absolute hoot as fast talking, dishonest car salesman Rudy Russo; Jack Warden hilarious in duel roles (especially as evil Roy L.), and Gerritt Graham is brilliant too. It wont appeal to everyone, but as comedies go I think it's one of the best from the 80's. I've seen it well over a dozen times and still laugh. Oh and the dvd commentary with Zemeckis and Russell is almost as funny as the movie.

Here's the fantastic trailer...

I bought P.S. a romance with Laura Linney and Topher Grace. Hello Mrs. Robinson!

And The Good Night some sort of fantasy thing with Penelope Cruz and Simon Pegg. Cruz plays a character in the Pegg's dream life whom he becomes so enamored of he goes to some lucid dream specialist in order to carry on a relationship with his dream girl.

The premise of the second one intrigued me, the notion of Laura Linney and Topher Grace together was so odd I had to see that one and they were three dollars at Big Lots. I am sure they are turkeys but...

Anybody seen either of these? Anybody? Anybody?

While it could've been a lot worse than it was, it's still nowhere near the level of the first two (although it is more or less on par with the third film). I first saw Polanski's Macbeth in 1989 as a 'special treat' during a GCSE English class. It's a wonder that I passed the bloody exam at all because the teacher also showed us Jarman's version of The Tempest as a way of explaining things to us...

We had the same teacher for A Level and she presided over the mother of all Parent/Teacher sessions as her class f***ed up the exam en masse. The swats got nothing higher than a C and yours truly got an E. She never taught English again and finished her days doing RE and Social Studies, according to my younger cousins.

Not that I'm bitter or anything.

It was the first film he made after the Tate murders, I think, and it shows.

When I blagged my way to Uni (had enough grades to get me through despite the Eng blip, thankfully) I discovered the joys of the BBC Shakespeare collection on VHS in the college library. They were fantastic and usually 100% faithful to the text - much better than reading the stuff or making a fool of yourself by getting drunk in the front row of the RSC. Erm, maybe that was just me.

Something tells me you wouldn't enjoy it ML. As you're a lover of 50's type monster/sci-fi movies I can see the appeal of the title, but the film is actually a deadpan black comedy/satirical horror (very J.G. Ballard) with virtually no action until the final reel. It's extremely offbeat, slow paced and played completely straight for the most part; definitely an acquired taste. That is to say a very good one.

NICE!!

First saw "Dead Heat" back in the 90's at an all night horror film festival.
It went down a storm! You have to adore the Chinese kitchen sequence.

Surprisingly downbeat movie though really, given the jokey attitude.
The scene when the girl slowly falls apart and she sheds a last tear as she dissolves away for example is a real strange scene in the film.
Effective...but miles away from the comedy that preceeded it.

Re; "The Cars that ate Paris"
I'm not up on all this picture posting stuff....Just Google the title. Lots of stills and posters.
It's not a great film but as I said it was part of my cult movie education in the 80's.

Also, not a movie, but I picked up the deluxe edition of Tom Petty's Live Anthology box set, which includes a dvd of the 400 Days documentary from the Wildflowers tour and a DVD of a concert from New Year's Eve 1978.

Tom Petty is the man.

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner (1967) with Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Really good movie.

I am ashamed to admit that i have missed a lot of K. Hepburn over the years and have only see 2 movies starring her.this one and Woman Of The Year..she's rapidly becoming one of my all time fave classic actresses. I can't get enough of her it seems..i am becoming more and more addicted..There's a lot of other movies she's starred in that i wanna see...planning on doing that the next couple of years...

Incredible woman/acrtess..everything...

I am stunned i must say.

I have the old "Complete Collector's Set" that was released on DVD in 2001, but this one has special features that were not included on the old edition, plus the picture is supposed to be a lot better. This is my absolute favorite TV show ever, so it's worth it to me.

Anyway, it only cost me about $5.00 out of pocket, since I had $50.00 in Amazon rewards certificates that covered the rest. Interestingly, the old set appears to still be in production and is more expensive than this one. Weird.

Freaky, I just got the Ultimate Blackadder as a Christmas present.

Anyway, stuff I bought recently...

Finally got around to adding American Splendor to my collection. Good film.

http://www.dvdsnapshot.com/2Feb09/MST3K14.jpg

Another slightly more interesting addition is Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XIV, the second MST3K boxset to be released in Australia (and one that had avoided my complete attention in any way until the other day).

An excellent Ciristmas present, this. were it not for the fact that Season 1 doesn't seem to like my player. Trying it in my Samsung BD player, there are sound syncing issues - no sync problems when played in another player and no sync problems with other discs in the Samsung.

Weird.

Already got the earlier director's cut of Blade Runner, but figured I'd check Scott's Final Cut out too. The Baader Meinhof Complex was a blind buy but it looks like my kind of thing. All the others are upgrades from TV vhs copies apart from Bad Lieutenant (which I had an ex-rental copy of) and The Orphanage which is a new addition.

Also picked up some cheap bargains on Amazon...

Three Days of the Condor (R1) and The Parallax View are both upgrades from vhs TV copies. Just like to thank Iro for reminding me of The Parallax View by mentioning it in the DVD collection thread;). Watched the flick again last night and decided to upgrade immediately. The Anderson Tapes I've not seen for over fifteen years, but it's early 70's Lumet so I can't lose. The Long Goodbye was a blind buy, but I've heard lots of great things about it.

The subs are quite small (and yellow) but you can see them. They are just too high on the picture for me.

The HOH Subs are bigger and mostly on the bottom border...but they are of course on there for all the English parts too.

It's the player generated chapters and dates that are the worst. They look cheap and nasty (how I used to like my women in fact... :D :D:p )

There have been loads of complaints about the Region A version of Zatoichi's picture quality. I think it's also got the same dumb deal that I found recently with Hero - the original language track in DD and the English dub getting the DTS Master treatment. ;)

I was thinking about upgrading my DVD (got the R2 and the better R3 print) and plumped for the Region B Artificial Eye release.

I'm fairly certain that it was Monster, starring Charlize Theron. Possibly 3 years ago? We're not big on buying DVDs, and somehow the hubby got banned from Blockbuster. (I'm still hazy on the details of that.)

I think we might give Netflix or some such thing a go. Someday.

Probably Spiral because some douchbag stole it from my mailbox before the mailman came to pick it up and send it to Netflix.

Rachel Getting Married

$5 bucks each.

Staying Alive and Elizabethtown for $2.99 each.

All the Tartan stuff I have is region 0 but it's probably PAL so you'd need a DVD player/TV to cope with that.

Saying that, I made a bit of a boo boo when I ordered that Blu Ray because when it arrived it was vanilla with no extras. That'll teach me for buying on impulse because I should have spent £1 more and got the US import with all the extras that the DVD has.

I'm either gonna keep the DVD or the import BD now and eBay the UK Blu Ray. ;)

I know that DVD's are becoming obsolete in the era of the Blu Ray.....

Blu-ray may be 'the new' format' but they wont make DVD obsolete anytime soon. They are playable in all BR players and people still are loyal to the DVD - no matter what. I personally only purchase exclusive DVD releases nowadays. I don't buy anything anymore unless its deemed necessary. But I will re-upgrade to Blu-Ray if its completely and utterly needed.

Also got Malice in Wonderland as heard good things and want to have something non-mainstream to throw against the inevitable raving fans of Johnny Depp In Wonderland when it's released (and if i don't like it).

The last DVD I purchased as Live Free or Die Hard because I could not resist completing my Die Hard legacy when I saw it for $4 at the local Blockbuster going out of business. I still think that the fourth one was a mistake overall. I would liked to have seen more of a return to a movie like the original Die Hard rather than a wandering into something more modern. At the time I liked it, but the more I think about it the more I disliked it. Maybe I will have to watch it again some time; I own it so I guess I should.

I bought Rear Window and Goodfellas. I haven't seen Goodfellas yet but figured it should be pretty good.
