However, you've played a blinder (pun intended) with your blind buys.

Any in particular that stand out?

And I just can't stop myself. :D Over at Sainsburys today and picked up another blind buy - Let the Right One In for £2

Jumping The Broom

A breath of fresh air in a genre otherwise dominated by played-out Tyler Perry films. Acting and script alike make this film the gem that it is. It's a comedy, so you can assume happy ending, but there are a few great little twists in the plot that make the film much more interesting, and allow it to effectively avoid cliche status.

Angela Bassett & Loretta Devine, two of my fav actresses in Hollywood, were both outstanding.

Bought the Clint Eastwood: American Icon Collection. I got it mainly because it had Play Misty For Me on it, which is one of my all time favorites, but it also has Coogan's Bluff, The Beguiled, and The Eiger Sanction. Haven't seen the last two, but Coogan's Bluff is a great movie. And at just 20 bucks it was a steal.

I got the Stewart/Tennant version of Hamlet because it's awesome, and I'd watched the copy I had out from Netflix six times.

Ummmm, first of all, The Notebook and Blue Valentine were not directed by the same person. Not even close. Second of all, I don't see how something as emotionally raw and stylistically stripped down as Blue Valentine reminds you of something as mainstream Hallmark Hall of Famey as The Notebook. Do you remember the scene in The Notebook where James Garner held down Gena Rowlands on the floor of a cheap motel and forced sex on her?!? Me either.

Did seeing Hard Candy also remind you of Juno?!? :indifferent:

Ultimately I thought it was an interesting failure.

Nice reversal on the alien abduction mythos, with a plot that unfolds like a mystery keeping you guessing. Just a shame too much of the first act is marred by characters endlessly bickering, and the subsequent story has far too many plot holes and questionable logic to really deliver a decent pay off.

On the plus side the film has a really nice could have-been-made back-in-the 80's aesthetic (barring a briefly glimpsed mobile phone, and modern sheriff's car) complete with tangible 'on the screen' old school special effects, and lots of ideas knocking about.

Who needs perfection anyway.

What did you think Mark?

[EDIT] Streetwalkin' is in the mail, so I haven't seen it yet. I have the trailer on one of my an old Vestron VHS ex-rentals and it's pure gold. It looks like a real 80's time capsule of endearing sleaze and cheesy pop music, with big hair, and lacey negligee all over the place...I can't wait.

mark f
09-26-11, 05:32 PM
Yep, I thought Altered was an improvement on The Blair Witch Project, but as you say, too much bickering was a leftover from the earlier film. I gave it 2.5 and admit it had loads of ideas which would have been nice to have seen on screen rather than just imagined in my mind. IMDb claims it had an $8 million budget, but I find that difficult to believe. Of course, my brother likes it more than I do and is willing to cut it more slack based on the idea all by itself. The alien was interesting for a while but then it started looking too much like a guy in a suit, but that didn't really bother me. It's short enough to watch more than once, especially if you're into the "genre".

French Connection Collector Edition

http://i43.tower.com/images/mm107056261/french-connection-gene-hackman-dvd-cover-art.jpg

Double discer for 8 bucks (brand new in package)

I already own the bare bones edition, but seeing that it had a commentary by Friedkin cinched the deal.

Every commentary ive listened to his has been chock full of info and well worth the experience.

Plus it had a couple of neat featurettes, my favourite being the walk through NYC with the actual detective that broke the french connection irl (played by Roy Schieder in the movie).
Movie : 5
Extras : 5

Capitalism a Love Story was $3 previously Viewed.

http://media.dvdtown.com/images/displaymedia.php?id=28075&sizew=500&cat=3&type=1&page=0

Dispointed in no commentary, however the expanded interviews were nice to see. Chris Hedges' in particular.

One oddity was the still image for the special features menu was of Wallace Shawn

http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/15/34/049a51c88da07d7592353210.L._V192237124_SX200_.jpg

yeah the inconceivable guy from the princess bride, yet his uncut interview isnt a special feature.

It was one of the things i was hoping would be there, as it seemed like a curious choice to use him in the movie in teh first place.

Just ordered this old midnight favourite from Amazon US. It used to get shown late in the UK a lot (can't remember if it was BBC2 or ITV) which is where I first caught it after missing the opening credits and not knowing the title. Rented it from Love film recently after stumbling accross a review and realizing it was 'that movie'. Geraldine Page is deliciously nasty in this one and Ruth Gordon the perfect foil, excellent black comedy.

There's a few that I'm a little curious about, but not enough to seek them out, Neds for example, and I'm not much of a Hitchcock fan. But the only film there that I really wouldn't want to watch (that I know of) is My Fellow Americans. That's an ITV1, 3:30am film with the sign language guy in the corner film. I'd have to be pretty ill for that to stay on my tv. :D

I haven't seen Senna or 13 Assassins, but I'm pretty sure I'd like them, even if they didn't live upto expectation.

As for the tv dvds, Community doesn't appeal, I've no interest in the Avengers (especially as it's not the 'proper' Avengers, with Steed. Hell, it's not even The New Avengers with Purdey and Gambit!) or MacGyver. I liked The Odd Couple when I was a kid, but I've not seen it since and, while I like Criminal Minds, it's not something I'd care to own. That and you've bought season 6 and I've not been too bothered by the last 2 or 3 seasons. It's gotten to the point now where I'm watching out of habit more than anything else.

Got a gift card for best buy, I got 5 Scorsese films in a box set (Who's That Knocking At My Door?, Mean Streets, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, After Hours, Goodfellas) for $20 total. I'm not a huge fan of his but it was the only thing at that store I could legitimately spend money on.

Incendies - £4
American Psycho - £3
Can't Hardly Wait - £3
The Wave - £3

I'm not exactly expecting much from My Fellow Americans. Just stumbled across it for a couple of pounds and decided to try it because of Jack Lemmon.

Was going to say you should definitely give Community a go but not really sure about your taste when it comes to sitcoms so won't. And I still really like Criminal Minds, still great to me. I only got into it a couple of years ago actually so still catching up by DVDs. Just finished season 5 with Tim Curry guesting.

Why do you say 'apparently'? Have you not seen them but the general consensus is that they're good? Or you have seen them, didn't find them anything special but you're in the minority?

I know you're a big fan of Leave Her to Heaven as it was your recommendation that got me interested. What about 20th Century Boys, have you seen that?

Mostly I've not seen them, though the popularity of American Psycho baffles me completely. It's ok, watchable certainly, but it's really loved and I can't see why.

I've not seen 20th Century Boys, but it was recommended to me by a friend of my g/f. I have the first, though I've yet to watch it.

I don't care for Strangers On A Train, either. I also confess that, while I've not seen them, Almodovar hasn't really interested me since the mid/late 90's, though I do want to see The Skin I Live In.

Not caught The Skin I Live In yet but really fancied it. Now that it's on DVD I'll either get it from lovefilm or blind buy it when it comes down in price a little.

Last ones I bought were Alien 3 Definitive, The Fourth Kind (review coming soon) and Elm Street remake.
Ok I too wish I hadn't bought two of them, Fourth Kind and Elm are utter pap, (Alien 3 Def is superb), but I'd still rather pay for my movies legally than have to put up with bad quality digital pirates that do nothing to help the movie industry.

Nope, I'm talking about saving your money for things that don't suck. Try before you buy is an undeniable method, especially since I do buy loads of records/movies. If you think that the movie industry needs help, you're misinformed. Independent artists need help, not Hollywood. Also, I don't get bad quality pirating so idk where you go.

Yoda
01-29-12, 12:34 PM
The idea that the movie industry doesn't "need help" is not an argument in defense of piracy on moral or practical grounds. There are many marginal films of varying budgets, and studios often have smaller arms (like Fox Searchlight) that try to find and acquire lesser-known films. Even when they don't, those lesser-known films are more likely to secure various types of financing if potential investors know that there's a chance that a larger studio will scoop it up and distribute. That all gets factored in. There's no magical level of revenue beyond which you're only hurting some stereotypically dehumanized fat cat, rather than the many ordinary people working for them on various levels, or the independent filmmakers often vying for their distribution. Economic effects are not compartmentalized like that.

There are many threads on this and I've had this exact argument before (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=684588), if you're interested.

The Rodent

Not much of a difference in prices - single or double play(if you can find a single now when a double play is out...). DVD on its own is naturally going to be cheaper than the blu-ray as it's below blu-ray quality now. I'd rather pay £14 for that above 'steelbook' edition in blu-ray quality with the DVD also, than £10 for the DVD.

I'm a big fan of steelbooks, so The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was a must have one that I've just pre-ordered on blu-ray:

I was going to order the steelbook edition from Germany(out a month earlier), but then saw Britain are now getting one, so saved some money on expensive postage. :)

03-10-12, 11:09 PM
They've got decent prices and good customer service (though for this it's best to buy items sold directly by Amazon rather than third party sellers).

Anytime I've had a problem with an item, they've immediately emailed me a return label and over-nighted a replacement. Also (unless you live in Washington state and until they change the law) there's no sales tax within the U.S. and you get free standard shipping on orders of $25 or more.

A safe official website to shop on, nothing wrong with Amazon at all and they are one of the best places for films. They have Amazon in other countries too and I use them all the time. Never had a problem with their service either if I need to send something back.

Only negative for me, the French and German versions have expensive postage on the lowest price delivery. I'm in England, and it's cheaper and faster to ship from the Canadian Amazon compared to France which is down the road compared...

cinemaafficionado
03-11-12, 10:46 AM
My experience has been that one can buy better at E-Bay, especially half.com, where you don't have to bid and the price is fixed and very cheap. Anazon has abetter selection but they are over-priced.
If you are selling, Amazon is better, if you are buying, Half.com is the best.

The black book refers to the identity of the traitor within the resistence, but doesn't really pick up on this until the last third of the film. If you don't take it too seriously, it's a fun watch. There's a few scenes that definitely have the Verhoeven stamp on them.

I'll + rep you for Shaft. I quite enjoy Nikita, too.

Shaft, is just so cool  The sound track alone is awesome. I've had "The Theme from Shaft" rolling around my head for a few hours now.

This is a new one on me. I've only seen the first couple of episodes when it first aired, so i'm looking forward to it.

I have to say though Maggie Q looks really hot as Nikita.

Breaking Bad: Season 1

Because everyone and their grandmother keeps telling me it's great. Watched the first episode so far, it's alright for now, hoping it gets much better.

I'm going to join that chorus of voices and say Breaking Bad is fantastic. It has a really wicked sense of humour and Bryan Cranston is great as Walt. It's one of my favourite TV shows along with Mad Men and Sons of Anarchy.

I prefer the design cover on the American release, so have ordered the blu-ray from America instead of buying it here. I do prefer the French release but it's really expensive but at least the American cover is very similar and I like slipcases and this one comes with one. :)

I was thinking of buying this on Amazon not because I loved the movie but I thought it was beautiful. I'm just not sure if its worth paying for blu-ray, DVD, and digital copy.
