I did recently tape the restored Metropolis off TCM, although I admit the "restored" footage didn't look the way I hoped. I have the Chaplin Collection DVD version of Modern Times which is great. The Kids are All Right rental showed up today, although I saved that to watch with Brenda and started watching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World first. I have a pristine VHS copy of The Night of the Hunter from TCM. The one I need to see in primo form is Monte Walsh.

This is the Region A edition. I already have the Region B director's cut but read that the US version has a better picture and HD sound, probably because it's spread over two discs, film on one and extras on the other, so they could utilize the space more efficiently (it's running at almost twice the bitrate apparently).
Normally I wouldn't bother with such frippery because the European Zodiac is a stunning looking film - Whenever I want to show someone what Blu Ray can do I whack it on - but I couldn't resist probably my favourite film of the last half decade.
Apparently the US release is region-free. It'd bloody well better be. ;)

I got this on blu-ray because it was under $10 and I consider it a really good movie which explores a big bad criminal who is by and large only guilty of what the United States government has been doing on a regular basis for years.

Hard to justify spending money on gritty thought provoking westerns that doesn't do well ratings wise. It sucks but that's showbiz. I may buy myself a set too, actually, but probably just on DVD.
Do you find Blu Ray makes a big difference to your viewing pleasure, though??

Basically, I looked on gumtree to see if anybody was selling it for a reasonable price. No such like. But then my bulb brightened. I came across a bloke selling The L Word entire series boxset for £25. I then went on the website for CEX (Computer Exchange) and checked out the exchange value for the series. It was £40 worth of exchange vouchers for L Word, which meant that I would make a good £15 profit even after using the vouchers to buy Dexter from the store. So I went to get the L Word and to my surprise I met 3 hardcore looking chavs who were more than happy for me to look through the set for a good 10 mins, making sure every disc ws crisp and clean. I found it hard to believe that these guys were fans of the show, so I assume they stole it off one of their relatives or whatever. No biggie, I didn't care, so gave the guy the 25 quid, got went to the Computer Exchange store all the way deep in north London, which is VERY far from me, exchanged the ****er for the vouchers and got Dexter. :)
Haven't watched an episode yet, I did the manly thing and borrowed the set to my sister, who is becoming a big fan of the show. Plus i've had crap loads of work to do so it's difficult this week. But come the end of the week, i'll be almost up to date :)

Forgot to mention that Dexter was 25 quid in CEX. So made 15 quid profit

I've got the DVD boxset but I'd recommend you get your hands on the R1 discs because there's bugger all extras on the R2 ones.
The Blu Ray set is only available in Region A (we're B) at the moment too.

Yes and no. I'll never be someone who'll like something just because it looks nice but when you see stuff you enjoy on HD there really is no going back.
If you don't have an HD telly, though, I wouldn't bother. First Blu Ray I got was the Blade Runner boxset after it had rave reviews - I still had an SD TV at the time and couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Then I got an HD set...
BDs are damn nearly as cheap as DVDs now if you shop around online so price isn't really an issue any more (unless it's an HBO number ;)) either and the PS3 is as good a player as you'll get this side of £400. Criterion use it as their reference player so that's a good enough recommendation for me. ;)

I've always been interested to know what you PAL people call a comprehensive collection of all the episodes in a television show. Here in the U.S. we call one year's worth of commissioned episodes a "season" and a "series" is the whole run of a show altogether.
So, my question is this: if your seasons are called series then what do you call a show itself?

That's an excellent deal, Tact. 6 quid per world cinema blu ray. You can't go wrong.
Usually, i'm awesome at getting good deals on DVDs. Most of mine are 2nd hand and in perfect quality with a year's warranty on them, so I usually get a good set for no less than 3 or 4 quid. Different story with region 1 DVDs though. I couldn't help it, I HAD to get In The Company Of Men and I don't see them releasing a Region 2 version anytime soon. Cost me 11 quid - the most expensive single DVD that's not a boxset that I have brought in years.

Miller's Crossing, Coen Bros fan, loved the acting, direction, and style of this film; Merchant of Venice, Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons, excellent version of the play; Little Big Man, great story and great performance by Dustin Hoffman. Gotta get a copy of The Usual Suspects next.
Most recent DVD acquisitions were Some Like it Hot, Long Kiss Goodnight and Miami Vice.
Only bought Miami Vice as it was £1. Not seen the film but love the original series so thought I'd give it a go for a £1.

Got this film because I had meant it to get ages but for whatever reason I never invested. Saw it for £1.50 and given the fairly impressive cast, thought it would be worth it. I think that Sarah Polley is a very good actor as well and have been a little bit of a fan since Go, so she's another reason why I took a chance on this.

I liked it, but it's adapted from a much loved book and had a bit of a rough time when it was released by those who loved the book. I liked it, Drew aside, and thought that Brittany Murphy puts in a good performance, too. I really like Lorraine Bracco and James Woods as the parents.

Aye, we must. To be honest, I've not bought a lot recently and am still in an almighty huff that Deadwood is only getting a release on a region-locked US disc a matter of months after I got rid of my Region A PS3 - bought a Region B one last year because of the amount of region locked discs coming out. Before that, 90%+ of the Blu Rays I had were region free so buying a cheap imported Playstation made sense. Wish I'd kept it now. :(
I've just checked my Alien anthology and all the discs have a blue stripe. I feel cheated...

It's just landed on my mat and seems to be an (unused) ex-rental disc. Just the movie, no extras - Dunno if the retail Region A disc is the same but Danny Boyle's stuff over here is usually dripping with commentaries and documentaries.

I notice it says 'not final artwork' on the final pic. I can officially confirm that this is indeed the case - 'The Complete Boxed Set' is written in white on my copy instead of red.
There must have been a few sleepless nights in the office before that one got green-lit. :p

It was in Asda and they were both blind buys for £2. Panic Room and Mr Deeds Goes to Town. Panic Room because I thought it looked quite interesting at the time but never got round to seeing it, and Mr Deeds... because I've really enjoyed what I've seen of Capra so far.

Sometimes i swear the kids in the stockroom get the boxes mixed up. Found it in the bargoon bin for $6.
There is a making of feature, that i'm just gonna go ahead and say is the best i have ever seen.
Every main Actor chimes in along with Spielberg , the UFOlogist from northwestern university that coined the title, and pretty much everyone who worked behind the scenes short of the caterer.
At first i was disapointed there wasn't a Commentary track, but really this feature is so complete it doesnt matter.

The first two seasons are very good. I've got the first four season, too, but I've only seen the first 6 episodes of season 3. There's nothing wrong with them, I've just not gone back to it. From what I've heard, though, the series starts to fall apart after (or maybe even during) season 5.

Seven films for just over £7! Includes Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Thing From Another World, Incredible Shrinking Man, This Island Earth, Creature from the Black Lagoon, It Came From Outer Space and Tarantula.
Supernatural is a show I plan to get into a big way someday. Picked the first season up on DVD and watched the first half or so a while back but just kind of lost track. Have caught a few of the later comedy episodes on TV which were really good - Supernatural convention one and the one where they are trapped in TV shows.
Holden - I love White Collar. Really good, slick show.

I bought a couple last week, one called Reincarnation, one called The Marsh. I was in the mood for some good supernatural thrillers. Reincarnation was the best of the two, it had you guessing until the end. Theres a place here where you can get all kinds of horror movies, anything from The Bride Of Frankenstein to modern movies for 15 to 30 pesos.

It's got the original film, Redux and Hearts of Darkness plus 'over 9 hours of bonus features' with new interviews with FFC, John Milius and Sheen. It's also got Big Orson reading the 1938 Heart of Darkness radio recording and lots of other stuff.
The fancy tangible stuff is a copy of the original theatrical program, postcards (which I'll never open if the Life of Brian special edition is anything to go by) and a glossy 'making of' booklet.
I'm impressed (it was £3 cheaper than True Grit as well :)), especially as it's an Optimum release and most of their BDs have bugger all extras.
I had a quick squirt at the Redux print and it's looking fantastic.
This is probably as happy as I'll be until September when the Once upon a Time In The West Blu Ray gets released over here. :up:

The Shining was not shot in a widescreen format. Kubrick shot a lot in the 1.37 : 1 format. Other films which weren't widescreen include Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, Lolita and The Killing.

Well I guess he shot it in 1:37:1 , but it was edited and intended to be shown in 1:1:85 for theatres. And then apparently Kubrick designed the 4:3 version himself, but the 4:3 DVD now looks dumb on widescreen tv's. So im just gona explode now.

It was definitely £15.99 or less that I paid because it wasn't priced up on the shelf and I took it up to customer services to see how much it was. It wouldn't surprise me in the least that they change their prices for different stores - they do it for their fuel, don't they? Maybe Beardy Frank's classic has a poor record of sales in Tyrone, I dunno. :D
Of course, there could have been a slight pricing SNAFU but I honestly doubt if I struck lucky in that same store twice in a few months. A friend mentioned wanting Fallout 3 and I saw copies going for £6 in that Asda - When I went to the till the price came up as £1 and the girl, while laughing, said that they have to sell it to me for that price. ;)

Yep, Hearts of Darkness is wonderful. Easily one of the best, if not the best 'Making of' doc ever ... erm ... made. First time I saw it I was astonished at how completely wired FFC was throughout shooting - By the end of the film I understood why.
I was never overly fond of Redux either and found it a prime example of over-egging the pudding. Unlike, say Blade Runner, the original film wasn't broke in the first place.

I pretty much am up at the store every Tuesday.
The last movies I bought on BluRay were:
True Grit >> Just love this movie. I think Jeff Bridges does a better job than John Wayne - and I LOVE John Wayne. But the girl in this movie is what sold it.
The Adjustment Bureau >> Haven't watched it yet - but love the trailer and I am a Matt Damon fan.
The Eagle >> Saw this in the theaters. While not Epic by any stretch - it is a good movie and I love movies of this genre <King Arthur time periods - Roman Empire>
Unknown - Wow - Great movie!!! What a follow up to Taken...
Before that it was:
The Pacific box set >> Liked it - not as much as Band of Brothers, but the Pacific war wasn't as nice and easy to follow for a movie as the European Theater.
Green Hornet >> Hadn't watched it before purchase. Not my fav - but entertaining.
Red Riding Hood >> Wife wanted this one. I liked it - but she is into those type of movies more than me.
Superman Box Set >> Classic!!! Had to own this one on BluRay! Thought they did a great job with the conversion and it has the Donner cut of Superman II and the Theatrical Release. Lots of extras including Superman and the Mole Men with George Reeves - as well as some early cartoons and documentaries. Also includes Superman Returns. I H-A-T-E Superman IV, but it is part of the set/legacy...so what can you do?
The Untouchables - realized when I saw this on BluRay that I did not have this on DVD. Had it on VHS, but I have since gotten rid of all of my VHS and never rebought this one.

$38! I got it for £17, that's around $26. It's blu-ray and for a steelbook that's a decent price. I don't like a lot of Anime, but Akira blew me away. I also adore Studio Ghibli animations. That's more or less the Anime I like.

I would, if i didn't own them already. I had to remove a chunk of my collection when ran out of storage space (around 40 total), except for a few boxset it's almost worthless listing them on eBay, even for 99p, once you take into account the effort and shipping etc. I got £30ish for all 40 at CEX and Cash Generator (the latter give 50p a DVD and the other varies).

I'm very short on space myself and took the step of getting one of those 200-capacity DVD briefcase things for £8 in Tescos. I shoved all my 'will watch again but can't be bothered about keeping it in a case' DVDs in it which saved practically a whole bookcase. The empty cases went in my blue bin...

Depends. I sold an out of print Richard III on dvd a few weeks ago. I bought it for £4 a few years back, sold it for £30. Some I saw were trying to sell it for £45+, so decided on £30.
I also sold an Ultimate edition of Akira for £10(out of print) so I could put the money towards buying the new blu ray/dvd collector's edition for £17.

Yep, seeing as it costs £1.09 plus envelope for first class postage before you even make any money from the DVD, it's just not worth it most of the time. I usually only put up rarer stuff (or things which cost a lot to begin with like boxsets) but those last few were good, serious movies so they were worth a punt.
I'm getting rid of Raging Bull because I found the Blu Ray in Tescos for £5. I can't compete with that. :D

Was that the one that came in two cases? I sold one DVDfor £3 in CEX but the Blu-Ray, except for the schmexy case, looks like a pretty weak effort.
I don't like throwing cases away, wouldn't be able to put them in a wallet! And prefer £30 to 40 average DVDs not gonna watch again. Got about half a 200 case full with burnt DVDs, mind.

Same here, usually, and charity shops need our stuff more than ever apparently. The emergence of those 'We'll buy your old clothes and bric-a-brac' places is causing a lot of the traditional charity shops to close down.
Aaaanyway.
PT - Most of my movies live out of sight now so I'm not as precious about boxes as I used to be. One slight snag I noticed is that a good 30% of my DVDs don't have the actual title on the disc so sorting them wasn't as easy as I figured.

I don't buy DVD's, but my dad bought Patton, his favorite movie, because he couldn't find a good copy anywhere else.

I think today's the last day of it, but it's buy 2 get 1 free of all DVDs. Including Criterions. I believe the 50% off all Criterions is in November, just a heads up.

I might take advantage, their website ships to Britain and with the postage some I would like work out slightly cheaper than ordering them off Amazon(plus postage) where I usually get them from. So might think about that. :) Naked is one I would particulary like on blu ray and I think they have that on the website. I mean, slightly cheaper is better than nothing but do I wish I was on holiday in America right now lol!

Nice haul of movies. If, and Repulsion are fantastic. Salo is probably the most brutal film I've ever seen, there's a great essay out there called "The Fearful Symmetry of Pier Paolo Pasolinni's Salo" that you should check out (if you haven't already).
