No, it doesn't. I pwn, at warcraft ;) DO you play? Anyway, have you seen BG? Two years ago I would have stood fast by 24, swearing up and down that it was the best. I think it has quite a few BIG flaws though. First off, the ever-rotating cast is lame, man. How does one gain an affinity for any characters when they change the entire cast, save one or two people every season? I also feel that during each exciting season, they invariably fall write themselves into a position where they have to insert an extremely goofy and ridiculous plot thread just to keep characters busy during the 24 hours. Let's consider one from each season:

Season one: Instant Amnesia for Mrs. Bower (Bauer?). Huh? This was totally lame, and had me laughing and shaking my head for three episodes, but then...she is all of a sudden OK, right when she needs to be. That said, this season rocked and had many, many cool twists, and a cool bad guy.

Season two: Watch out Kim, giant cats!! WTF???

Season three: This is the weakest season, in my mind, and had a TON of events that were preposterous, and completely unbelieveable. The show got way slicker, and lost it's gritty feel. Samuals was one of the worst bad guys I have ever seen. I kept thinking they had hired some waiter to play the part.

Season Four: I liked this more than three, and the final 8 hours was exciting and fun, reminding me of how the show used to be. But...but..the middle section was terrible, with the useless head of CTU and her daughter Maya (terrible, terrible writing), and I could tell the writers were hip deep in rewrites and just didn't know what to do with the slew of ****ty characters they had added to the cast. The show lost sohesion completely. They somehow pulled it together for the end, but I almost stopped watching the show during the middle 8 hours...

I know, I know...It's friggin Battlestar Galactica, how could it be good? It's not good, it's fantastic, thought provoking, and interesting. IMO, some of the best TV ever produced.

Watch the episode where Starbuck interrogates a prisoner, it's mind blowing...

Yes, you are true about all of that, but shucks, i just really enjoy it.

Teri was a sucka which was why Nina popped her, damn straight too.

In Season 4, when Tony came back, i think i actually came there and then.

I played Warcraft once and decided to harrass some fool by chasing them around (i don't really 'game' and had no idea what i was doing- was it you by any chance?).

Are you referring to the 70s Battlestar Galatica, i havn't seen any newer version. If so, then yeah, i like it, in a retro cheese kinda way. Though i'm guessing there is a newer one and i'll be sure to catch it when it's (if ever) shown.

Though i'm guessing there is a newer one and i'll be sure to catch it when it's (if ever) shown. Oh, no...lol 24 certain owns the old 70s show, that's for sure. I am referring to the new, very dark, very gritty, very well written series that debuted in 2003.

Official Website (http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/)

The mini-series pilot that is a must watch before getting into the seasons (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314979/)

It is based on the old show, but doesn't have too much in common with it. This show has zero camp, and is locked into the current times, dealing with issues of sleeper agents, terrorism, genocide, racism, and religious fanaticism. Each time I recommend it to someone, they laugh in my face...literally laugh in my face. Then they watch a few episodes and call me up and say "Mike, I am sorry I doubted, this is one of the best shows I have ever seen."

So...don't listen to me, listen to them!! I hear it's available on R2 DVD....Scope out the pilot, then move on to season one if you like it. Enjoy!

_S

They have made a few changes to the show since the 70s, for example, here is a picture of one of the cylon infiltrator agents:

http://www.genreonline.net/Genre_files/BattlestargallacticaNewCylon.jpg

Here is a picture of Apollo and Starbuck:

http://www.tvsquad.com/images/2005/03/battlestargalactica_240_003.jpg

...and here is a pic of the main cast...notice Edward James Olmos as Commander Adama and Mary McDonnell as the President, both excellent in their roles.

http://www.sciencefictionbuzz.com/images/Full%20Cast.jpg

Huh? Starbuck is a girl? Let me tell you. Starbuck is bad ass...BAD.ASS. Such a well written character and played quite well by Katie Sackoff. So far they have fleshed out all the characters extremely well, and I struggle to think of a weak episode in the whole run so far... The cast are drawn up as real people, with real problems, and nothing is easy for this crew.

In the old show, the human race is all but wiped out, but alas, the crew of the Galactica strut around without a care in the world, gambling, telling jokes, acting like heroes...In this show, the human race is all but wiped out as well, and these people are shattered, desperate, sweaty, and scared. mistrust is everywhere, anyone could be a cylon, megolomania starts to crop up on both sides, mentalities fray, and people die, constantly. It's a war. At the end of the season last year, I sat, mouth agape, reeling from what had happened and reeling from the ideas the show was dealing with. In the old show the cylons were walking toasters with an IQ of about 7. In this show, they are intelligent, calculating machines...religious machines...megalomaniacal machines.... But some of them are flesh and blood, and look, eat, think, and REPRODUCE like us, making it a tough issue to just blow them away like so many cardboard cutouts. Some of them don't even know they are cylons. What an intricate plot structure these devices make. Love it, love , love it....

One episode in particular, Flesh and Bone, is a one on one interrogation of a sleeper agent by Starbuck. I have watched the episode three times now and am still completely blown away by it. One of the best hours of TV I have ever seen... This show is all about characters, with the technology taking a back seat, only serving to help flesh out the world these great characters inhabit.

I picked up Joint Security Area today because I'm in love with Park Chan-Wook and I got Audition and Survive Style 5+ in the mail. So, three blind buys in one day. Audition, I've just been waiting on forever, and Survive Style 5+ I considered buying weeks ago, but told myself I wasn't doing blind buys after Infection was a piece of complete crap, but I couldn't hold myself back anymore because the synposis was too convincing. I think I'll watch Survive Style 5+ tonight, especially since I just read the nods it recieved at Fantasia.

A friend of mine (who is a flight attendant) bought the film "The Aviary" for me as a birthday gift. I have always been interested in Aviation and flight attendants so I guess she thought I would like it. Before watching it all I knew is that it was a feature film written and produced by a flight attendant. I had also read an article in the San Francisco Chronicle about the gal who made it:SF CHRONICLE ARTICLE (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/07/15/NBGB0DMM0N1.DTL&hw=Silver+Tree&sn=002&sc=712)
After finally watching the film I can honestly say that it blew me away. I'm not sure how much it was made for (although I have read that it was between 25-50K) but it has amazing production value (I would have guessed the budget at closer to 1-2 mill). The acting is remarkable, beautiful cinematography and the story is very compelling. As an aspiring film maker and aviation buff I was truly inspired by this movie. The insiders perspective really shined through this fast paced, thoughtful, honest look at the people who make up the modern world of aviation.

You can watch the trailer:The Aviary Official Site (http://theaviarymovie.com/mainpage.htm)

Not a fan of Lars Von Trier at all. Just someone I can't get into, a few people in my photography class drop his name every time I talk movies. Seems to be one of those directors that people believe make them sound educated in film, they don't seem to have any substance to their arguments as to why they like him. For me I have to be intrested in the story to watch a film, or have some prior knowledge of the director or stars of the movie. Don't think I'll be renting Dogville, just can't get into him as a director, and I'm not a fan of Nicole Kidman at all.

Ok Stu I'll try to defend it with a little substance. The atmosphere is key. The sparse set enhances the isolated, desolate feel of the town tenfold and the voiceover narration gives it a fairytale feel. All of these and other factors combine together to sweep you up into this world. The cast of characters are all very interesting in their own right and the simple production highlights the fantastic performances. For me the film just made me feel everything Nicole Kidman felt as she struggled through her time in Dogville. It is painful, charming, sad, sweet and beautifully atmospheric. And yes, the photography/cinematography and especially the lighting are gorgeous. I may not be one of the eminent Mofolars that Tacitus is talking about, but I highly support this film!

The last DVD Movies I bought was the Jurasic Park Trilogy. I ebayd it and thought I got a good price but it turned out to be some Asian thing with no hard cases for the movies themselves, just clear sleeves with the discs in a box. Does any one know where I can get the cover art work (maybe a printable format) I can buy the hard cases myself.

Don't know about the "greatest", but definitely one of the most interesting and memorable, of course because of the infamous death at Altamont when the Hell's Angels, supposedly there for security, went into the crowd with knives and chains and started a bit of a riot - all captured on film. But yeah, good music from the Stones, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, and a good look at the darker excesses of the lifestyle as the decade was winding down. And if you have a copy of the Criterion edition of the flick (though probably not in Scotland you don't), some great extras abound as well.

But for my money The Last Waltz (1978 - Scorsese) is the best Rock & Roll documentary ever made, centered around the farewell concert of The Band with a roster of guest stars including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters and many others.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy - A blind buy. I really like Old School and Dodgeball, hopefully this'll be just as good.

Frankenstein/The Bride of Frankenstein - Another blind buy. I keep hearing about how great The Bride of Frankenstein is, so I just bought it out of curiousity.

The Producers - Another blind buy. I like Mel Brooks' other flicks, so I'll probably like this one too.

21 Grams - I've only seen this once, and I've been meaning to buy it for a while. Brilliant film.

A Fish Called Wanda - I've always loved this little comedy, and the special features just made it all the more tempting.

Yesterday for us in R1 the Brazilian movie The Man Who Copied was released. I saw this earlier this year on the big screen, LOVED IT, and here were my thoughts from back then...

The Man Who Copied - O Homem Que Copiava (Jorge Furtado, Brazil)
A heist movie about a day-dreaming comic artist barely scraping by with the minimum wage he earns making photocopies in a small store who yearns to turn his obsession with the girl next door into a romance, this fantastic flick is a must-see. It is funny, it is charming, and it is exhilerating filmmaking. If Pedro Almodóvar were Brazilian and made a cross between Rear Window, Say Anything..., Fresh and Nine Queens it would come out as The Man Who Copied. I'd go into more detail, but it's just best to figure it all out as it's unfolding. I can't wait to see this one again. What a ride. What a smile.

GRADE: A-

Oh, and on top of it being a great movie, The Man Who Copied is also a great introduction to the stunning beauty that is Luana Piovani. My god...

L.A. Confidential (Hanson, 1997)

Now... I didn't intend to buy either of these films today. I went to the store to buy Barton Fink and Robert Altman's MASH. The problem is, I went to Worst Buy, and they didn't have either of these films. When asked when they would be in stock, the cherub faced kid, who seemed to have an IQ of about 6, replied..."Uhhhh, those aren't popular films, so we probably won't ever have them again. Try our website."

Whatever. So I decide to look for a different Altman film, as I want to start getting into his work, and seeing why folks like Holden and Slay praise his films so much. They didn't have ANY Altman films, at all. No McCabe and Mrs. Miller, No Nashville...nothing. I start to get incensed, mostly at myself for coming to such a ****ty store. My mind starts racing...What else is on my wishlist... Wong Kar Wai!!! Ok...where is the foreign film section....

There isn't one. Now I am really getting irritated for driving over to this dump, which is clearly a store for Deuce Bigalow fans and the like. Crap...what else can I get... Barry Lyndon...A Kubrick classic...Nope, not there. Amadeus, another I have been meaning to get. Nope, don't carry it....

Blood boiling, now that I realise I have wasted my entire lunch, I head for the door. I glance in the 9 dollar clearance bin as I walk by, and spot Raising arizona. What's this??? A good film?? I grab it immediately. Feverish, I rummage the bin, looking for something worth buying... LA Confidential. I know I have seen it, and I remember liking it, but it might just suck, I just don't remember. What the hell, I see Kevin Spacey and some cleavage on the cover, I think it's neo-noir, but am not sure.... I'm taking the plunge....

Ah, I feel better now. Vent session over.....

Ahh, I forgot about that one. I was just pulling the names of the films I remembered you folks throwing around while talking about the genius of Altman. Holden had also recommended McCabe and Mrs. Miller to me in a PM a while back. He hit me with a nice list of seminal westerns to check out, many of which I have. I also looked for The Long Goodbye, which I know you love, but they didn't have that either. The Long Goodbye is in my Netflix list and will come to me in the next week or so, so I will get a chance to watch it.

I have seen LA Confidential, but just don't remember a damn thing about it. Of course, I watched it back when Tales From the Crypt:Demon Knight was one of my favorite films, so I don't think I would have appreciated it properly...

Damn I am glad I found MoFo....

McCabe and Mrs. Miller is certainly one of his very best, all right. Not many films bring the opression from hard living back in the old days as perfectly. I could almost feel the damp coldness in my living room...plus Ms. Christie is at her very best...plus Beatty is at his very best...plus Altman is at his very best...plus...

M*A*S*H and The Player are probably his most accessible among his great works. The Long Goodbye too, and it's a must. Nashville and Short Cuts are both great masterpieces, but you might not want to jump right into them until you're more familiar with his style. McCabe & Mrs. Miller definitely, just genius stuff. Cookie's Fortune isn't one of his most singular works, but it is so damn enjoyable. I really love California Split, but now we're starting to get into the territory of either loving or hating his films. Images is frippin' brilliant, but I'm sure there are many who would give up on it half-way through.

There is still plenty of essential Altman that I have yet to see, so I may be missing a classic. If I knew someone local who has yet to see any Altman at all, I would start them off with M*A*S*H. It’s easily the most widely known of all his films, and certainly deserves the praise it has gotten. If they enjoyed that, I’d move on to McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, and his newest masterpiece, Gosford Park. Nashville is an amazing piece of work, but I dislike country music so much, I wound up gritting my teeth throughout most the film. I liked it, but it was almost an excruciating experience for me…odd as that sounds. The thing is, most of the characters who are supposed to be country music stars, are terrible! It was deliberate, and sometimes funny, but the only thing I hate more than country music (other than rap), is bad country music…if there is such a difference.

Other than those, I’ve only seen four others. California Split, a fun gambling flick starring Gould, and as you yourself labeled him, that guy from Just Shoot Me. ;) Popeye, great if you’re really stoned, and okay if you’re not. Short Cuts, which is similar to a Paul Thomas Anderson flick (I think Anderson mimics Altman, making him a lot like Tarantino to me.) And Cookie's Fortune, a really underrated comedy.

There are still so many I need to see, but I can tell you this…Altman is on my top 5 list for living directors. He’s a magician, an auteur, and quite simply, a master storyteller.

I hope you fall in love with him too, C.

It doesn't work one bit. I've hated the idea of this remake since the beginning, but I still felt obligated to give the show a chance. I regret watching this fuddle of un-funny moments with no comedic talent whatsoever. Steve Carrell tries far too hard to be playing this character and fails and it while Ricky Gervais get's it so very perfectly. And Gervais can actually get a laugh out of us. So, "The Office" (USA)... horrendous. "The Office" (BBC)... one of the best television series' ever created.

That's the good thing about Best Buy: they have tons of great movies priced between 6 and 10 dollars. Such as: Rainman, Bladerunner, The Big Lebowski, Top Secret, Airplane, Dark City and High Fidelity just to name a few.

HMV were doing 3 pretty recent DVDs for £20, which seems a great deal 'til you find lots of titles on the shelf which they recently had on sale for £4.99. ;)

I still bought 6 for 40 quid though. Must stop visiting that shop...

Bought " Riding Giants " today, the best documentary on surfing.
Saw it last year in the US, and have been waiting for the DVD since.
Although I've never surfed, it's always something that's intrested me, and what I like about this DVD is it takes you from the beginning of surfing, the early legends and hotspots, through to modern day heroes and how the sport has changed.
Well shot and well researched, great for adrenaline junkies like me, hey I might even watch " Point Break " again soon, like totally awesome dude!!!

I finally found a review of the movie:

I don't think I've seen this since the good ole' Moviedrome days (a BBC2 film series presented by Alex Cox who always managed to shoehorn in some of his own). ;)

I'm always rooting through the bargain bins and found this for £3.99. Fantastic commentary (as always) from Scott, who spends as much time talking about making Blade Runner as he does this movie. ;)

It was in the bargain bin, of all places. I hadn't seen it yet, but I knew it was going to be solid based on the reviews I read way back during its cinema run.

Woo boy, did I ever get my money's worth. That flick is incredible. :)

I placed an order last night, should be arriving soon. This was a 'blind buy', I bought it because I love Godard's films, and been anticipating to see this film for a while.

 I got that one for cheap, too. Funny when the people selling films don't know their value. :)

so....is it really as superior to the ring as they say it is?
there's no way i can get it, and watching a japanese movie with english subtitles is just not going to work for me.....

I think it's far better than the remake, but definately been hyped too much.

Dark Water is a more accomplished Nakata film, for me. :)

The American remake is far more polished than coherent movie, though lacks in the creepiness that Ringu successfully creates. Tbh, unless you're a movie buff, there's no need to see both, as the films both lead up to that one twist which has impact only once. For my money though, the Japanese version pulls that scene off far better.
