i just got my copy of MXC in the mail last night. I put in during dinner and nearly spit my food across the table i was laughing so hard. i was also super happy to see that there were a few episodes that i had never seen. i thought i had watched all of them on spiketv, but i guess i was wrong. anyways, it is a super funny show and a great pick up to have in the DVD collection.

Solaris - I've heard some very positive feedback on this film from this site, and I trust your opinions.

Schindler's List - Been wanting to get this for a while, but never got round to it.

Se7en - The same, but also because I've never watched it all the way through, only in bits and pieces (and I'm hoping that me having already seen the ending won't spoil my enjoyment of it).

Apollo 13 - I enjoy films, and I enjoy history.

Bonus DVD is supposed to include behind-the-scenes on the making of X-Men:The Last Stand with "Fox Movie Channel: Casting Sessions"and "Life After Film School". Though instead it has a featurette on the history of the X-Men comic book. Somehow I'm gonna complain to Fox. It kinda pisses me off.

The last DVD i bought was 'Down to the Bone' -just preordered on Amazon yesterday. I saw The Departed and really liked Vera Farmiga's role in it. I also saw an interview with Martin Scorsese where he talked about her and mentioned her starring role in "Down to the Bone." I immediately looked up information on it and decided to buy it - I didn't know at the time but it won a couple of Sundance awards. I can't wait to see it... i will let you know how it was when i do!

JRS besides better picture and sound quality is there any other substantial differences between HD dvds and regular ones? I think regular dvds have fine picture and sound and I don't plan on getting an HD TV or dvd player. I am just sort of wondering

No offense TD, but that is a really ridiculous question. First and foremost IS the better picture and sound quality. That is what anyone would want and necessarilly need. So I do not see how DVDs are better. Naturally, there are MAJOR differences and advantages. While watching the film there is a cpability of pulling up the menu to watch extras, can change scene(s) or anything you want - anytime you want during the movie. Even most films you can pull up as a picture in picture making of during the film, describing how things are done and made. Visual audio commentaries, entertaining "pop up videos" like VH-1 of all kinds and many add ons to build further in the world of motion picture watching entertainment.

I watched King Kong (which won't be released till next week) last night. I was blown away by it!! It is so crisp and clear and absolutely 110% flawless all the way. Here's (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Universal/Exclusive_HD_Content/Disc_Announcements/Universal_Adds_U-Control_to_King_Kong_HD_DVD/316) an article on the new "U Control (http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Universal/Exclusive_HD_Content/Disc_Announcements/Universal_Adds_U-Control_to_King_Kong_HD_DVD/316)" especially added exclusively for King Kong HD-DVD.

Yea that was kind of a stupid question but I never said regular dvds are better I just said to me regular dvds look and sound fine and I don't think the upgrades are worth the price of a new expensive tv and expensive dvd player

Well maybe what is seen and withheld in HD-DVDs compared what it is written here is not so clear. Not wanting to switch over can be due to not enough $$$ for the player, I see that. With purchasing the HD-DVDs, they are , to be honest, the only way to watch a movie. For all movie fans like us. And for switching DVDs to the the new format......I am starting to sell mine and get $$$ to purchase HD-DVDs of th same film. ;)

Domestic Disturbance
Virus
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Screwed
Bless the Child
Along Came a Spider
Fire Down Below
The Haunting (1999)
Saving Silverman

I plan on switching to HD as well but not for a long while. Personally I don't like to spend over 10-15 bucks on a movie unless it's something I absolutely need to have. Right now I'm trying to take advantage of regular DVDs at good prices and they're still a terrific viewing experience with my HDtv and surround sound. I'll wait until HD dvds become less expensive.

Yeah from time to time, that bargain bin has some decent films in there for 6 or so bucks. Along Came a Spider is a very good bargain personally.

Indeed, there's some good deals in the bins. That's usually where I look first thing as far as Wal-Mart goes, then I browse the $7.50 section and so forth up to $10. Unless it's a brand new release I probably won't go any higher than 10 bucks per movie.

Best Buy has some good weekly deals too sometimes. I went there before I got home and grabbed:
Austin Powers in Goldmember
Devil's Advocate
Desperado
Matrix Reloaded
The Fugitive
Sleepers
Rush Hour
All for 5.99 each. :)

Sleezy

What do you not like about he cover art Sleezy?

Eh, it just looks really uninspired. It's probably partly the graphic designer in me, because visually speaking, the composition is awkward to look at. It takes up the whole cover with not enough negative space to provide relief to the eye (the eye likes SOME kind of margin), and the visual elements aren't really working in their current arrangement. Also, if you're going to put Superman on the cover, why show him at such an awkward angle when you don't have to? You see mostly his back, and barely the symbol at all.

But more than that, I think they chose an image which doesn't do justice to the film. It may have been okay for an ad in a magazine, or maybe a coupon - but given that many DVD covers have really nice, meaningful compositions on them, this one feels tacked on, mass-produced... like there wasn't much thought put into how the DVD cover visually represents the film. (Incidentally, there are quite a few recent covers I feel the same way about.)

If it were up to me, I'd have used THIS (http://www.supermanhomepage.com/images/superman-returns8/sr_onesheet_6_28.jpg) for the Superman Returns cover, or something similar. Just a better designed, much more dramatic and meaningful composition.

I think you mean the Special Edition (http://www.amazon.com/Superman-Returns-Two-Disc-Special-Brandon/dp/B000J10ERO/sr=8-1/qid=1164759401/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0611469-8151066?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) version with all the extras. Both the Widescreen and Fullscreen versions of the Standard Edition have the cover art I posted.

Yeah, the SE cover art is better, but it still isn't as polished as I'd expect. It just looks manufactured and simple, like they dug up an unused studio image of Routh, Photoshopped a matte painting into the background, and added some speed washes. Anybody who even knows half their way around Photoshop could have handled that gig...

An example of recent cover art I despised is the V for Vendetta Standard version (http://www.amazon.com/V-Vendetta-Widescreen-Natalie-Portman/dp/B000FS9FCG/sr=1-2/qid=1164759612/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-0611469-8151066?ie=UTF8&s=dvd). Way too busy and cluttered, way too much red, and much too generic. In fact, I think one reason why I opted to buy the Special Edition (http://www.amazon.com/V-Vendetta-Widescreen-Two-Disc-Special/dp/B000FS9FCQ/sr=1-1/qid=1164759612/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0611469-8151066?ie=UTF8&s=dvd) version instead - delicious extras notwithstanding - was that the cover art was so much more stylish and unique.

But hey, the films are still the same ones I saw at the cinema... and when I display them, people can see only the spines anyway.

Ok yeah, I was tempted to buy it today but will go for the 2 disc special edition instead. I know someone who's going to get it anyways so will check it out then. But yeah, those additions I mentioned are the ones I've always wanted to see again. The should have been put in the dvd long a looooong time ago anyways.

But more than that, I think they chose an image which doesn't do justice to the film.
Hmmmmm to me when I first saw it, it just looked a bit to cartoony. But that scene there with the plane was perhapst the best rescue footage in the movie. Honestly I wouldnt mind if they did keep that scene on the cover but get rid of that dopey look on his face. He doesnt look too focused there. Seems like he's thinking of louis in her bra and panties rather than saving them in that plane.

Here I believe is the spanish art cover.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4167/supermanreturnspanishfrqw0.jpg

And I believe this is the Austrailian cover.

jrs, is this the one where it shows Zod nail the kid on a horse with that police light?
Also, in the end where it shows the cops bring the 3 villains out of the Fortress of Solitude in handcuffs? I only saw this once on t.v. and never again so I figured this would be the cut that had it.

Thanks jrs. I still didn't read the parts I mentioned in there though.

Major new footage. Superman turns back time to avoid the devastation of the planet caused by the super-villains and make Lois forget his secret identity. Partially filmed by Donner. Confirmed.

This here could be neat to see but the whole time thing doesn't make sense to be used for that. Everything reverses itself except superman so the 3 villains again would reverse and go right back before the Paris bomb. So would he do it differently and just aim the bomb in a different direction or would that be left unexplained. And why didnt he just do that once he got his powers back. Just too easy for him to use this power and personally think they shouldnt have used this time revesal method in the first Superman either now that I think about it.

And so glad this Donner cut got rid of that ridiculous comedy with that clown yapping away in a phone booth that just got knocked down, or that other goof on the rollar skates. Ice cream in the face was silly too. Mm-hmmm.

Escape - There is no Paris bomb. That scene was added later for the theater cut. The entire Paris thing is gone, at this point. An errant missle from the first film breaks the zone open in this version...

Still, point taken. I have read complaints about discontinuity with the time reversal...

One of the stupidest is the last joke with the invincible-again Clark returning to the bar with the guy who beat him up when he was briefly human. He does this after he reverses time, meaning that first event never happened. But when he gets there the bully recognizes him, the owner pleads for no violence as he has just spent money fixing the place up (from the first fight), and after the a-hole is dispatched Clark tells them he's been working out, thus his increased ability this outing compared to last.

Yeah, I guess that small diner up north was the one area of the world not effected by the time reversal. Maybe it's because they're so close to the Pole and they spin less, so they only got reversed part of the way?

Still, as long as I don;t have to see that guy on skates rolling backwards, or the idiot trying to eat an ice cream while four meta-humans destroy a city block around him, I will be OK. I mean, that is what i would do if Superman and three powerhouse destructo villains were battling mere yards from me. I would get me some tutti fruti!!

Oh ok. A little better I suppose but still the problem with if the devastation of the planet can be changed easily so should everything else such as the Villains being back in the Phantom Zone where they would have no clue what happened since it didnt take place. The first one had it's problems too. He reversed it long enough to get her from dying but still, why didnt the earth continue to crack immediately after he stopped the reversal. It just seemed to never happen. Like a tape recorder. You rewind it, stop then play again and it should continue in the same pattern. Arggggg, time travel annoys me sometimes.

1. I am still collecting DVDs
2. I own HD-DVD drive for HD-DVDs and my Playstation 3 plays Blu-Ray

Not everything is on both HD and Blu-Ray. I played a Blu-Ray disc and the quality? Outstanding. Both Blu-Ray and HD are worth it. The difference is with the extras though. HDs are much, MUCH more interactive.

Yeah,so is the PS3 graphics compared to the x box 360 cause of that blue ray technology in their system. I had no idea it would effect the games till I saw a PS3 game and inquired why it was so much better there.

And by you saying outstanding, your saying that the sharpness of a blue ray is better than hi def picture wise right?

And you still think hi-def will eventually win this battle?

I own a X-Box 360 and the games look sweet. I don't have any games for the PS3 as of yet.

As for saying outstanding I mean that it is well, outstanding. Both Blu-Ray and HD beat DVD in every sense of the word of quality when it comes to watching a feature film.

When comparing the two now that I have both.... the so called "battle" doesn't seem necessary. I mean I believe they both can co-exist because they are equally exillerating.

PS3, as I was watching people play it in video game shops, looks so much more crisp and detailed. Blue-ray was one of the answers I got when I asked why anyways. I dunno. The upcoming Starwars game looks sweet for the x-box 360 though. Very, very sweet. :D

People online more positive of HD-DVD

A new study compiled of 17,664 postings on social media sites, blogs and discussion boards between Oct. 1 and Thanksgiving shows that HD-DVD is winning more hearts compared with Blu-ray.

"The report compiled by Cymfony Inc., a Watertown, Mass.-based market analytics firm, found that positive online discussions about HD DVD were 46% greater than Blu-ray" according to Home Media Retailing.

The report also shows that gamers might in fact hold Blu-ray as a negative thing when it comes to the PlayStation 3.

"Sony forces you to buy Blu-ray," read a post at forums.adventuregamers.com. "MS doesn't force you to buy HD DVD. It's about giving the consumer options."

More numbers from the study can be found here (http://www.homemediaretailing.com/news/html/breaking_article.cfm?article_id=10013).

This doesnt make sense. Mirosoft's X box can only play HD dvds so it's the same there isnt it. Arent' they forcing you to buy HD dvds as well just like sony with the blu-ray? Or is it that blue-ray dvds can ONLY be played on the PS3 where as HD dvds have many systems out there and not just the x-box 360? I haven't been keeping up on this too much so I hope I dont sound too stupid here in my questions. :(

Though Blu-Ray is a strong competitor , I'm not turning away what I previously stated earlier about Blu-Ray being "excellent" in sound and picture. It's just side by side HD-DVD wins.

Did you then reverse the dvd players with the t.v's to make sure it wasnt that one hi-def t.v. set was better than the other and not the dvd's themselves? I have seen some expensive hi def t.v.s that looked crappier than the lesser expensive one.

I loved Donnie Darko. Far from being stupid, it's a thought provoking, interesting picture.

Also, Donnie did save the girl. I think you missed the whole Christ-like nature of the Donnie Darko story. He had to sacrifice himself to save everyone else. In the film, a tangent universe is created when the engine enters a temporal anomoly in spacetime. In the tangent universe, Donnie possesses some level of supernatural power, as well as a heightened awareness to the temporal scism. Notice how most of the other characters act strangely, like they can almost pick up on the fact that something is wrong, but not quite. Donnie's mental problems clue us into the fact that perhaps he has a somewhat stronger level of spiritual cognisance that the rest of the poeple involved. The film is his quest to understand himself, and through that, what he must do the realign the space time continuum.

I mean, any time travel story or film is going to run into a paradox at some point, so there are some holes in the time traveling here and there, but this stuff is all secondary to the themes of salvation and redemption this film tries to get across.

Donnie talks this concept over with the science teacher (well played in an understated role by Noah Wiley). The teacher states, and I paraphrase here, that foreknowledge of events constitutes a form of time travel, because really, if you know exactly what will happen for the next thirty or so days, you are, in ssence, existing in the future, on an energetic and mental level, if not actually on a physical level.

I believe the majority of the film happens in a fraction of a second, right as the engine is falling through the roof, and Donnie is faced with death. We have seen this mechanic used before, in Scorsese's wonderful The Last Temptation of Christ (which also happens to be one of the films playing at the double feature Donnie takes Gretchen to). Donnie lives the next thirty days in the tangeant universe, finds out the outcome, and, more importantly, how he can change everything for the better, and then decides to let himself die, collapsing the scism in time, and saving everyone else in the world, through self sacrifice. So, none of the event you witness after the engine crashes into the house the first time actually happen, as Donnie is able to project himself forward, gain insight and direction, and change the apocalyptic outcome (basically the end of the world), and, in essence, travel back in time to save the world.

"Donnie Darko, what are you, sounds like some kind of super hero or something" - Gretchen Ross

A wonderful concept that is executed pretty well for a freshman director. The film has a few flaws, for sure, but I find it interesting and compelling, personally. It's pretty well made and acted for a low budget festival piece, as well.

I really want to get this on DVD, but i HATE the cover. It looks awful, like some graphic designer straight out of university has butchered it together on his lap top, whilst drunk and riding a horse. YUK.

I'm gonna wait to see what the cover looks like when it's released in the States.

Make your own cover. I thought the movie poster with the fetus with an all-black background was a decent idea but executed dully. The only one I've seen that I came close to liking was the British Quad, click HERE (http://www.impawards.com/2006/children_of_men_ver4.html). That's the one I've printed up for my DVD. Whatever.

It is a pretty bare-bones disc, but what I care most about at this point is having the movie itself. I'll happily buy a better edition down the line.

She can't? I've been straight for all my life but she is like the most sexy woman on earth. For one day i'd change my preference. But when i look at hot guys (ie my boyfriend) i fully understand why im straight. Maybe im just aware of the fact other women can be extremely hot and sexy, but guys are sexy from the star because theyre guys? I dont really know, i think.

I just bought The Four Feathers for €4,99

I loved the image of the fetus with the black background, even though it was a bit '2001'. But i agree, the Quad image - and B cards, is the best for the cover. So i might wait until it comes out in the States to buy it, i'll just rent it for now.
As for making my own covers, i would happily do that, i used to do that all the time. Unfortunatly it is such a fist to print off good images from my printer that i just can't be bothered. I'll wait until i get something better.
