I found Ripper Street very underwhelming. I just about made it through the first series. It's coming back, but I doubt I'll bother unless it changes/improves greatly.
We Need to Talk about Kevin - I'd just read the book and wanted the see the movie. It didn't disappoint.

Found this for £1 today. Been wanting to see this for a while.
I just bought the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender this morning. I’d never heard of the show until a few weeks ago but after watching the Nostalgia Critic’s review of the movie (which I recommend watching if you have 40 minutes or so to kill: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSu0HeRnG18) I decided to pick the first season and really enjoyed it. I thought about picking up the third season as well but decided to wait a bit since I have a long list of movies I want to watch first.

The last two movies I just got in the mail today were a still sealed copy of Anchor Bay's 1998 release of The Night Stalker/ The Night Strangler and a Used Like New Pristine copy of Quartermass and the Pit/ Quartermass 2 Anchor Bay Double feature. Both are such gorgeous titles all around and it is so hard to believe that this copy of Night Stalker/ Night Strangler wax released in 98. Nearly 16 years ago. That's so crazy

I thought it was fairly good honestly. Some of the jokes aren't that great but I liked the character interaction and the animation is really pretty good as well. The mini-movie is total crap though. I'm not really a fan of the ending song either since it's almost all auto-tuned but it's otherwise a good movie in my opinion.

I actually quite enjoyed Hotel Transylvania. Although I watched it during that period where I was sick and just looking for some silly fun (alongside Brother Bear, Lilo & Stitch, Princess & Frog etc) so it may not be the most reliable of opinions
And I hope you enjoy Pleasantville. Thought it was a delightful little film. Need to give it another watch at some point actually

First Blood
Steelbook Edition - Blu-Ray
Found this at Best Buy for $15. Already owned it on Blu-ray in a regular case, but couldn't resist buying this for the images on the steelbook cover. I only own three movies with a steelbook case (one of them is The Big Lebowski ). The back of this features an iconic picture of Rambo with his knife from First Blood. Nothing exciting on the inside. I kinda wish now that I hadn't opened it, but I did.

Turns out steelbooks are FRAGILE AS HELL and are mainly bought as collector's items which people often don't unseal, and if they do, THEY BUY PLASTIC BAGGIES TO PUT THEM IN. SOME PEOPLE APPARENTLY EVEN USE BULLETPROOF GLASS TO PROTECT THEM.
THAT DOES IT! I am NEVER buying steelbook Blu-rays again! Collecting that crap will steal every last bit of sanity I have left!

That's a downside of steelbooks unfortunately, the amount of times I've had to send back steelbooks because of scratches and worse dents!
As for putting it on the shelves and getting scratched, I put my steelbooks into plastic sleeves for that reason alone. I've got obsessive compulsive disorder and I have to put a film box/steelbook on and off the shelf a certain number of times, and with steelbooks that will be a problem for damage because of the sliding up against other steelbooks, so I put them into plastic sleeves so that will not happen...

I couldn't believe it. I thought steelbooks might not have such problems because my other two steelbooks never got scratched. BUT THIS ONE!
It's probably somewhat my own fault because I had the movies tightly squeezed in a row and First Blood shouldn't have fit in there. Now I've changed it around and made them lay in a looser row. The scratches are small and on the edges. I'm not planning on being a collector so I guess I'll just have to live with it.

"Fairly decent"?
I found it to be a wonderfully funny and very touching film. It touches on some very heavy and serious adult matters - depression, loneliness, suicide, Aspergers and alcoholism - with a great deal of humor and sensitivity. I was moved to tears by the ending.
But then again we've already established that what I find wonderful, you... might not.

It's The Wicker Man (in triplicate) on Blu Ray, basically.
Just a little heads-up for any UK posters who happen to have a Tesco Direct close to them might be worth a quick pop in. They're having a massive clearout sale with some amazing bargains. They're selling out quick though, at some stores it's apparently a mad frenzy. And it doesn't help there are people buying hundreds of items to then sell them to CEX for a profit. Greedy b*stards!!!
I managed to get a few DVDs very cheap - Boardwalk Empire season 1 (£1.75), 2 Broke Girls season 1 (£2), An Idiot Aborad series 3 (£1), The Master (£1.25), The Hunt (£1.50), How I Spent My Summer Vacation (£1)
Where I could really have cleaned up though was with blu rays if I collected them. Saw loads of amazing deals including Wreck-it-Ralph (£2.50), complete Lord of the Rings trilogy (£2.50), Die Hard quadrilogy (£2.50), Alien anthology (£2.50), Amazing Spider-Man 3D (£2.50), The Artist (£1), Point Break (£1.50), The Avengers (£2), Silver Lingins Playbook (£1.50) etc
Other people have managed to get Game of Thrones season 2 blu ray (£3.75), Frozen Planet blu ray (£1.75)

All we have now, barring the supermarkets, is Xtra-Vision which is a movie rental chain and used to own Blockbusters UK. I'd stopped going to my old one for a couple of reasons - Online disc rental/streaming was cheaper and the manager of my local store was a monumental arse.
Might give my new local a try just for old time's sake. I think they're now owned by whatever company is picking over the bones of HMV and have rebranded some stores as Xtra-Vision/HMV. Doubt there'll be much of a change inside.

I love this film. I rediscovered it two years ago after having not seen it since the '80s.
Same here - I hadn't seen it since the 80's (when I was a little kid) and it's even better than I remember.

Yesterday I bought, The Man who shot Liberty Valance and The Night of the Hunter.
I'd already seen Night of the Hunter but needed to have it in my DVD collection, Watched Liberty Valance today and what a superb film it was, the 5th Ford film I've seen (Stagecoach, Grapes of Wrath, My Darling Clementine and The Searchers being the others) and every one of his films I've seen so far have been of the highest calibre, did this man make any poor films?

A friend and I hung out yesterday and visited one of our favorites stores that sells a ton of DVDs, Blu-Rays, CDs and vinyl. Even when I don't plan on spending money, many of the deals are too often to good to pass up. Pornografia from Poland and La Terre (1921) from France...
Why? they both looked compelling. Pornografia isnt about what you think, it takes place during WWII in Warsaw.

I went to my local cheap DVD shop today and picked up:
The "Back to the Future" trilogy - I don't think a reason is needed except I was silly and have only just got round to this.
Special edition "Pulp Fiction" - twenty years ago with all new features
Special edition "Get Shorty" - a film I have always enjoyed, I had it on VHS and never updated
"The Departed" - one of my favourite mob rat films
"Crash" (2004) - I know a lot say it is like being hit over the head with a fish being told "you know racism is bad right?" but I really love it as a film
"Atonement" - never seen it but heard a lot of good about it
All for a rather nice 15 pounds

I've been "Double Dipping" my DVD/Blu-Ray purchases as of late:
http://www.criterion.com/films/28046-red-river
http://www.eurekavideo.co.uk/moc/catalogue/red-river/
Their comparisons:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews8/red-river.htm
Personally, I enjoy the MoC version, at least in transfer, better than I like Criterion. Not saying Criterion is a bad transfer... but it all depends on what you're going for in the film. With MoC the picture quality tends to lean more towards darker shading which makes the skylines come out more I feel, especially in the clouds. Whereas Criterion gives more of a "wash out"/"hotter" desert feel. I like them both... but I think the contrast between land and sky is greater in the MoC version.
I also got this:
http://www.eurekavideo.co.uk/moc/catalogue/touch-of-evil/
and this
http://www.eurekavideo.co.uk/moc/catalogue/f-for-fake/
From MoC, (again "Double Dips")
Other notable purchases:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/Reviews/leila.htm#l
Gravity (DVD+Blu-Ray)
Double-Dip of Stagecoach Two Disc (non-Criterion, already own the Criterion version)
The Searchers (Ultimate Collectors edition DVD, another Double-Dip, I own the Blu-Ray)
That's all for now.
Excited to watch this with Altman's commentary.

I bought it today because 1) 50% criterion at barnes & noble 2) Have a barnes and noble membership - extra 10% off.... 3) had a 20% coupon as well
so I paid under $30 for a $80 box set of 3 films... I think I got a great deal!!

The pics aren't working, n3wt. From Hell and The Virgin Suicides are both very good. I don't know which version of Shaft that is, but as it's you, I'm guessing the 2000 verrsion. I. Hated. It. But then, I loved Shaft and had been waiting five long years for that remake. A remake with Samuel L Jackson. How could it fail? Simple, don't make Shaft the coolest guy in teh film.

Nightmare man, I dont know about the pics as they are working for me  I havent seen any of them (apart from Nightstalker we watched that last night) and have seen trailers for them and they all look awesome. Yes Shaft is the remake, I have never seen it, It never seemed to take my fancy but as its a Sam Jackson film I will prob like it.
Sam Jackson was in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy and that was horrendous.
