I went to a used book/record store and bought 1987's Predator, because it is one of the myriad important movies that isn't on streaming. I'd never seen it and who knows when I would have if I hadn't gone?

VHS never had a chance against DVD, but right now DVD certainly has a big chance against streaming due to the lack of selection on the latter.

Ironically, the last DVD I buyed was 'Clockwork Orange' by Stanley Kubrick - actually was still missing in my collection. It was a real steal. And also a masterpiece which, in my opinion, not many movies come close to. The artificial 'youth language', the bizarre mixture of happy music with violent scenes, the state of the society in the movie itself - just wow. A real Kubrick, a real blow to the mind.

I've spent the last few weekends at flea markets and I bought a bunch of DVDs for dirt cheap prices. The prices of these DVDs were as cheap as five for $1 for some of them, to only $2 each for a few of the blu-rays. Today, The Nice Guys, The Conjuring 2, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes arrived on DVD.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was my favorite film of 2014, and was also, quite simply, one of my all-time favorite science-fiction films, right up there with Cronenberg's The Fly and Donnie Darko.

The Conjuring 2 is my favorite horror film this year and was a very pleasant surprise, improving on the predecessor and amounting to a terrific horror film.

The Nice Guys is, quite easily, my favorite film I've seen in theaters this year, and quite possibly one of my all-time favorite films, it's downright hilarious and brilliant.

If you don't recognize these, it's a film trilogy called Infernal Affairs. Hong Kong movies, the first film was remade to excellent success by Martin Scorsese with The Departed. The whole reason I decided to buy these is because how much I enjoyed the US adaptation. I am hoping to have some enjoyment with them.

This is perhaps one of my favorite film sagas. Infernal Affairs III I will tell you, takes a page from The Godfather Part II in terms of executing a juxtaposition of timelines. When I saw The Departed, I was stoked to see what a great reboot it was. Andy Lau, Tony Leung, Anthony Wong, and Eric Tsang are great in these films.

I bought Eliminators, the new WWE Studios action film that was out this week because I'm a huge fan of Scott Adkins.

My girlfriend and I exchanged gifts last night.

I bought her an emerald ring, which I put inside of three large boxes, then, took a book and cut out the middle, where my put the ring box. It was an old book, so I played up this ridiculous idea that it was meaningful and past down through my family, blah, blah. I bought her an Undertale hoodie, which I actually received for free, because I didn't like it and tried to return it, but the company was just like, "Keep it, here's your money, ugh." I also bought her Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which I still haven't given to her yet. I won't see her on Christmas, so I hid it in her bookshelf and will tell her about it then. :)

Anyways, the additions to my movie collection were the A Nightmare on Elm Street collection (which I already owned in different sets, but this box-set is more "heavy duty," and she seemed real proud of it, so, I'm not saying ****) and Attack on Titan: Part Two (she bought me this on the spot while we were at Wal-Mart when she heard me talk about how I wanted to watch them. She bought me the second one though, without noticing.

Cary Grant: The Vault Collection - Cary Grant: The Vault Collection focuses on the first 5 years of his career where the man born as Archibald Leach transforms into the iconic persona of Cary Grant that he is associated with today.

Featuring 18 films released between 1932 and 1936, the collection showcases the actor as he perfects his comedic timing and stretches his dramatic skills in a variety of roles alongside such Hollywood legends as Marlene Dietrich, Mae West, Sylvia Sidney, Charles Laughton, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott and Fredric March. Including his feature film debut, This Is the Night, as well as several Pre-Code dramas and comedies plus 5 films never before available to own, Cary Grant: The Vault Collection is a rare look at the origins of a man who once famously remarked "Everyone wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant."

Films Include: This Is the Night (1932); Devil and the Deep (1932); Blonde Venus (1932); Hot Saturday (1932); Madame Butterfly* (1932); She Done Him Wrong (1933); The Woman Accused* (1933); The Eagle and the Hawk (1933); Gambling Ship* (1933); I’m No Angel (1933); Thirty Day Princess (1934); Kiss and Make-Up (1934); Ladies Should Listen* (1934); Enter Madame!* (1935); Wings in the Dark (1935); The Last Outpost (1935); Big Brown Eyes (1936); Wedding Present (1936) *Previously Not Available to Own

I bought four films at Family Video for five dollars. Good deal, I'd say. I bought Crimson Peak (a solid film from Del Toro, very stylish. This film seemed to get mixed reviews, but I liked it more than Pans or The Devil's Backbone.), Reign Over Me (along with Funny People, this exhibits just how capable Adam Sandler is as an actor.), The Wrestler (extremely good film. Highly recommended.), and Moonrise Kingdom (haven't seen, been meaning to watch more Wes Anderson though).

Ordered this from Amazon because the American Blu-ray is a little too expensive when you add tax and shipping, considering it doesn't include the DVD this one does, and considering that both are Regions A and B locked, the UK Blu-ray seemed to be the better deal. That and I'm a big fan of Daphne Zuniga.

I bought this because 1) I like Jackie Chan, 2) I'm a fan of Zhang Lanxin (the girl on the cover, she wowed me in Chinese Zodiac and is a former taekwondo champion) and 3) it's a loose reboot of Chan's 1998 film Who Am I? (the original title of the film is actually Who Am I 2015)

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91p1%2B8x3VZL._SL1500_.jpg
I bought this film, having seen it in 2014 because it's a great indie action film with a twist and I got to know two of the stars of the film, Fabien Garcia and Lohan Buson. They are not only great guys off-screen, but they are very talented fighters on screen as well.

The U.S. Blu-Ray of this film, because it will have both the U.S. and international cuts so I will get to hear Bruce Lee's ghost with two voices LOL...also because we get to see what Kurt McKinney is up to.

I am a sucker for American martial arts B-movies and I recently became a fan of lead Hector Echavarria's again after being disappointed with some of his MMA films (although I recommend Chavez: Cage of Glory...his best amongst those IMO) plus Michel Qissi brings back the original Tong Po look from the 1989 Kickboxer.

I love grindhouse trailers and I love Cynthia Rothrock...nuff said! :)

Then, I got these at a special deal direct from the filmmaker's website. He has made 10 films and these are his first 5. He's the grand-disciple of Bruce Lee as his sifu was Lee's student and he decided to do his own films:

Both seasons of the astronomically great "Mr. Robot", mainly because Comcast On Demand had it but only one ep. per...well, not, day, but however often you felt like pushing buttons. I'm extra lazy and like my stuff to stream non-stop.

This show RULES! Not like Sherlock, Not Like Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul but DAMNED close! The soundtrack is fabulous! Maxcence Cyrin is a genius. The cast is amazing, except for whatsername Gumm..the hoity-toity daughter of Meryl Streep who things talent is inherited...as IF! I mean....look at Mozart's two kids...Nuthin'!!!

Rami Malek is wonderful. He needs to take over Hollywood with Vince Gilligan and run it.

Because after watching Waxwork and Waxwork II, I found myself very interested in Antony Hickox's work as a director. Kind of a nut-job personality with a really neat camera/editing style, over the top effect work, and manic energy. I was not bored with this film, and plan to watch it again soon. Hope they put it out on blu ray.

As a fan of the games, I actually liked it. They came up with a story never used in the games and Michael Fassbender actually did quite well IMO.

That's good to hear, a lot of the criticisms seemed to do a lot with the surrealism and ridiculousness of the concept, particularly the use of historical figures, which is almost a motif of the Creed series. I'm sad the film didn't do well at the box-office, only grossing about 240 million off a 125 million dollar budget (and probably a substantial marketing budget to go with the production), because I would've liked a franchise. Ubisoft is apparently developing a television series, however, and apparently it will be on Netflix.

I haven't checked out how they look on UHD yet, but I'm looking forward to it. I had a pretty good weekend finding cheap DVDs at garage sales. :D

At one garage sale, I bought these DVDs for $1 each:
Dances With Wolves - Special Edition
Bernie (with Jack Black)
A League of Their Own

And the complete TV series (Seasons 1 - 6) of "Rescue Me" (with Dennis Leary) for only $7, so I paid $10 total at that garage sale.

And when I bought Madagascar 3 - Europe's Most Wanted for $1 at a different garage sale, the seller threw in Madagascar 2 - Escape 2 Africa for free. :)

Technically this is a VHS, but I think this is an appropriate place for it.

I'm tired of waiting for Francesco Rosi's Lucky Luciano (1973) to get a Region 1 release, so I finally found a decently priced VHS copy. I've been meaning to see this, and Rosi's Salvatore Guliano (1962), which has a criterion release and has been lurking in my DVD queue for quite some time.

Also, another Region 1 release I'm tired of waiting on is Abel Gance's Napoleon (1927); anyone have any info on a North American DVD release date?

For some reason, buying Rosi's Lucky Luciano (1973), gave me a hard on for nostalgia and watching movies on VHS. Right when I started Blockbuster in 2005, they were pretty much dumping all of their VHS tapes, so I already have a few tapes (for some reason) I always held on to. I always wanted to see Fred Williamson take on the Cardoza Crime Family in Black Caesar (1973), and I can't think of a better medium to do it in than VHS.

I'm also in the market for a blacksmith if anyone knows of one.
