At some point, in an apartment I lived in during college, we had three copies of that movie. No one could figure out how it happened.

Couldn't help myself, bought a couple this weekend:

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Was thinking how much I wanted to own this movie, and low and behold it was $6.50 at Target. It's like the universe is hearing my thoughts and providing (or, more likely, that Target has a vast selection inexpensive films).

Singin' in the Rain
I'm having a hard time with life now that Singin' in the Rain is no longer on Netflix Watch Instantly. I have this on VHS (VHS!! It's ancient technology!), so it really needs to be upgraded. Of course, I've been holding off on getting it since I've heard the commentary sucks, but what can you do. Mostly, I purchased it because I want to force a friend of mine to watch it, and I'd be embarrassed bringing over a tape.
Die Hard Trilogy for 10 bucks!

I'm guessing the actual clause that ends your sentence is something like "'tis awesome." I'm just guessing here.
This morning I ordered a DVD of Tsai Ming Liang's What Time Is It There? on Amazon. It will be the only hard copy of my favorite filmmaker's work I own. I felt that I owed something to this guy and wanted to make a "gesture". WTIIT is probably is best film, but I can't decide definitively. They are all wonderful.

Iron Man -Ultimate Edition (2008)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/515wjJQt2nL._SL500_AA300_.jpg
I have a confession to make. When it comes to movies adapted from teh comics, in a lot of cases, I like the featurette that covers the history of the comic through the years, and points out the issues that were used for inspiration, as much as the movie itself.
Now as it happens, my wife bought me Iron Man- the bare bones edition, for christmas last year, so I wont be mentioning this purchase to her.

Last DVD bought was a reissue of Repo Man, complete with special features, fancier packaging and lower classification. Now my original copy - with about ten different types of subtitles, no special features and one very unnecessary R18+ rating, is now more an amusing curio than a DVD to be watched. And I paid about $20 for it (as opposed to $10 for the new copy).
Those were the days.

I know a lot of people didn't like it (a friend of mine actually stopped watching) but I thought season 3 of Dexter was the best yet.
Awesome thats good to know weve finished watching the first disc which has the first 3 episodes in. What I have noticed in some scenes like for instance Dexter in the car on his own and he is using a telephone the camera or the picture doesnt look as crisp as it was in the first 2 series. It has a more B movie feel to it when im watching it rather than before, the visual camera I mean now not the actual series. Has anyone else had this problem?

Pawn shop was selling DVD's for $1.69. I couldn't believe it. They put a limited amount of titles out a time so these are the ones I wanted out of this stash. Will hopefully make it out there again this weekend. All 10 movies for just over 18 bucks.

Its an unconventional movie experience for sure. When I saw it the 1st time it reminded me a great deal of the Armageddonish flicks that used to star Charlton Heston in the 60's and 70s.
On a side note, I love the choices that Clive Owen has made career wise. Its awesome when an actor can't be pigeon-holed into a particular role.
We'll be watching Clive Owen movies for 30 years. He's the Gene Hackman of his generation.

5 movies I got for my birthday a few weeks ago:
I like all 5 of these films but I mainly wanted this for the bizarre polemical comedy Three Resurrected Drunkards and the truly weird Japanese Summer: Double Suicide. I can't wait to rewatch these soon, as they are two of the most surprising and interesting movies I've seen on the big screen.
The other three are good as well but there are others of Oshima's films from this period that I would have rather had.
I would have placed any of the following before Sing a Song of Sex and Pleasures of the Flesh:
Death by Hanging
The Ceremony
Boy
The Sun's Burial
The Man Who Left His Will on Film
Diary of a Shinjuku Thief
Oh well, still good to see any of his films getting released.

This finally arrived yesterday. It's as sumptuous at on first appearance but I think that Castle Rock have missed a trick somewhat - That glossy book/sleeve could easy have been made just that little bit bigger (say, the size of a multi-disc case) and also included a copy of the play itself.
I suppose that the majority of interested parties would already own Billy S's most famous work anyway and maybe Castle Rock didn't want to highlight the couple of bits which didn't actually make it into the film (unlike those old BBC RSC VHS tapes).
EDIT - Having watched some of Wallander recently it struck me how ... well ... doughy Ken has become around the face. ;)

I see that the 'and why' of the thread title is optional, but here's why - I went to Blockbuster to rent a film. I saw this one and picked it up, it being something I'd wanted to see. I then walked past the 'preowned movies' section and saw a whole stack of them. It cost £4 to rent and £5 to buy so I bought it. I thought that at the very least it would save me having to take it back to the shop the next day. And it turned out to be a very good film that I'm happy to have in my collection.

Good old Doug McClure. I hadn't seen these since I was around 10 years old, and I had a whole lot of fun re-watching them. So much in fact that I'm also going to pick up The People That Time Forgot to complete the series.
Childhood favourite was always Warlords of Atlantis, but this time round At the Earth's Core pipped it with the funky lighting and telepathic lizard men on wires. Not to mention Caroline Munro.
http://static.letsbuyit.com/filer/images/uk/products/original/139/83/the-doug-mcclure-fantasy-adventure-triple-pack-dvd-13983827.jpeg
Also found Larry Cohen's overrated but fun It's Alive series again (I had them a few years back and foolishly traded them in - been regretting it ever since). Island of the Alive is by far the most entertaining of the series in my opinion. Just need The Ambulance and Hell Up In Harlem now and I'll be happy.

Also picked up these two dirt cheap...

One night when me and my friends were doing the quiz in the pub and during one round we were handed a sheet of movie scenes and obviously, you had to guess what each movie was. We sat looking at one picture of someone with a furry hat in the snow and I screamed that it was Fargo and I got it right. Little did anyone else know that I've never seen Fargo and I didn't even know what it was about and it had to have been one of the luckiest guesses ever! So I happened to find a used copy in Cex and I just had to buy it. :)

Danny Boyle's Sunshine and Chasing Amy (Kevin Smith, of course). Haven't gotten a chance to watch the former yet. I also received a number of Blu-rays for my birthday last week: Kick-Ass, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Vanishing Point, The Matrix, Casablanca, and North by Northwest. The last title looks absolutely astounding in 1080p for those of you who are interested. I only wish I could have gotten a change to see it projected in 35mm.

The last one I got for £2. Got Drag Me To Hell because I hadn't seen it before. Romeo Brass because I love it; Inglourious Bastards because I need to finally determine whether or not it's better than Pulp Fiction or not (I'm still blown away by it, particuarly Melanie Laurent) and got Fish Called Wanda because, well, I love that too. Overall the bargain prices played a big role as I wouldn't normally buy so many DVDs in one day.

We bought *batteries not included because it was $5 and my wife loved it when she was a kid, so we picked it up for Family Movie Night.
Having finally gotten rid of our VHS collection, we got Toy Story and Toy Story 2 on sale. We'll pick up Toy Story 3 and give the kids the whole trilogy for Christmas. (This way ends up cheaper than the 10 disc set.)

Because I really like James Purefoy and always wanted to see him lead an adventure epic like this. It's a weak film and what should be it's biggest strength in action scenes are handled with a lack of imagination and little flair, BUT Purefoy pretty much saves it with a very good performance and it does feel like an epic film at times with the beautiful landscape.

'Lost Boys: The Thirst'. For nostalgic reasons. Plus I didn't think 'Lost Boys:The Tribe' was too bad. Yeah, an acquired taste for bad movies, I know.

Cold Souls
Fighting
Toy Story 3
I bought all 6 of those last Tuesday. Toy Story because it was the only new release I cared for. The other 5 I bought because Blockbuster was having a 5 for $20 sale so I picked up five. Though I will say Fighting was pretty much crap and only picked it up because I needed a fifth movie and I like Terrence Howard, so Terrence Howard seemed good enough in comparison to the other available movies in that section.

Last movie I got was Iron Man 2 on blu ray. I know there's a thread for Iron Man 3 and I am sure there's one for this one too, but I thought it was alright. It definately wasn't as good as the first one, but sequels rarely are.
Just bought Scott Pilgrim and Grown Ups earlier.

Thing is, I was never a big fan of Twin Peaks. It seemed just too ... I dunno, wilfully up itself?
I done went and bought this now. Nurse! :D

Still never seen Shallow Grave, but the Twin Peaks buy is brilliant. I've not seen it since, but I think of it as one of the best tv programmes of all time.

When Twin Peaks was on its original run (late school/early Uni by my reckoning) I was at a stage where I was rarely sober (and even rarer-ly in the house) so only caught it in odds and sods. That's probably why I never got into it at the time.
I'm perfectly amenable to giving it another chance but whether I make it through all 10 (count 'em!) discs is anyone's guess. It'd make a great slightly used Christmas present for someone in their late 30s or early 40s though. ;)
Shallow Grave is a stone cold classic, I think. Tighter than a gnat's chuff on a cold day.

Brand new member, so apparently I can't post hotlinks yet, but I just got the classic animated film Grave of the Fireflies. So good, but so sad. I hear there was a live action version in the works...? Not sure how I feel about that one.

Import. Cheap.
Oh, regarding the cheapo Shade DVD I wrote about a few posts back - It arrived in the week and the print quality is fecking awful. VHS quality in fact and I'm pretty sure that my local video store has some ex-rental copies for much the same price which I know to be far superior. That's where I'll be heading.
