Spent previous weekend in the old Spa town of Hisarya (Thracian region of South Bulgaria).
It is a great tourist spot for all seasons. Hot springs, many modern spa-hotels and on top of everything the remains of the ancient Roman city of Diocletianopolis. More than two-thirds of its city-walls are considerably preserved.

Here some fresh winter pictures I took of the place:

▽ The south gate - symbol of the town:
97166
97167
97168
97169

▽ The colonnade with hot mineral water fountains in the town center:

▽ The warm pool in our hotel:

▽ The beautiful park that connects the new spa hotels with the ancient town:

The last weekend, spent couple of hours at the National Archaeological Museum in Sofia. Every last Sunday of a month, the admission is free.
There are a lot of interesting things if you know the history. The building itself is a valuable spot too. It is a former mosque, built in 15th century. The museum was established in 1892.

▽ The main entrance with the lapidarium outside.
98310

▽ The main hall seen from the gallery
98311

▽ The golden treasure from Valchitran, Pleven (end of second millennium BC)
98312

▽ Silver container for wine (2nd-3rd century)
98313

▽ Ottoman ceremonial helmet. Gilded bronze (16th century)

I was lucky enough to take a private jet down to Arkansas to see the solar eclipse at full totality. The experience went really well since the weather there was exceptional. Here are some pictures I took throughout the day:

98415
Here's the jet we took to get there and back.

98422
Here's a pamphlet they had on board which gave some info as to the type of jet.

98416
Here's part of the interior of the jet.

98417
Shortly after takeoff.

98418
I don't remember the name of this drink, but it's champagne mixed with orange and mango juice.

98421
Since we arrived fairly early, we waited in the terminal for a couple hours.

98419
This was after our group arrived and set up our gear.

98420
Another shot at some of the telescopes we had set up.

98423
This was taken as the sky began to get dark.

https://i.imgur.com/MVFXs4c.png
I know this is blurry since I had to screenshot it from a video in order for it to post here, but this was what the sky looked like at full totality. I also took a video of the sun at full totality, but it didn't show up well on my phone. My Dad took some quality photos with his telescope though, so once he develops them, I'll post one here.

98424
These were some liquor samples I picked up at the end of the flight.

We also took some group photos, but since they have my face in them, I prefer not to post them here.

You're so lucky SpelingError, I'd have loved to have done that.

Is the drink you had a Bucks Fizz? That's orange juice and champagne but I've never heard of Mango added, so I don't know if that's an addition or a totally different drink?

Also the totality pic isn't showing for me. Anyone else or is it just me?

I just looked it up. It's a Mango Mimosa.

Also, I'll repost the totality pic:

Again, it's not the best shot for the reason mentioned up above, but you can definitely see a clear difference in the sky.

Are you usually an organized person or did you cram all the dirty dishes into the kitchen just to take the photo:Di’d say i’m 60/40. i prefer things put away and organized (a place for every case, and every case in its place) but i can’t keep it that way for longer than a day or two. i should have taken a photo for a beforehand. the room was pretty damn full and you could only open the door. now all that stuff is organized and packed away in the basement on wire shelves. i had been putting it off for a year and it just kept getting worse, so i’m glad it’s done.

i’m glad y’all like the color because it came that way. haha

Yoda (Admin) has addressed this lately:

You can also use the IMG tag to link to external images as FilmBuff described. There are lots of sites that handle uploads, I usually use Imgur.com. But attachments are the only way to ensure the image will be here forever (or at least, as long as the site itself exists).

Will need more specifics on this, for example the debugging process would be very different if this were happening in The Shoutbox as opposed to a thread, or via Quick Reply instead of the Post Reply page, whether they were the ones "provided" by the site or ones you're trying to link from elsewhere on the internet, et cetera. :)

If you wanna pursue this though, please start a new thread in the Site Stuff forum (the one this thread is in now) and I'll be happy to help.

But then I got an antenna and saw how much 4:3 content was getting broadcast and it really does look gobs better on the old TV.

This wouldn't be classified as a "barn find", but I'm not familiar with the term for "surprise find!!!".

Originally came across this "mighty cycle, not a big-wheel" box and was excited, knowing how much these boxes can be worth. It's not in perfect shape, but above average for 40 y.o. cardboard. Took the time to heat the tape off the box in order to see what condition the cycle was in. Probably pretty ruff, because that thing took a beating.

Imagine my surprise when I opened it to find...

So I did a thing recently.

A few weekends back, Kelly took me to see her favorite band, ELO, for their farewell tour. I happened upon a David Bowie tribute show the night before and, being MY favorite artist, we went to that too. Great weekend for us both. She splurged for two VIP tickets with ELO, so we got to live the high life for a few hours with some swag, access to the VIP lounge with a few free drinks, food, and chats with some great fans.

We shared a round table with three other couples, all extreme fans of the band. It was great. Kelly seemed to really enjoy the night but, before they released us to our stadium seats, I had one more topic to bring up.

I asked for everyone's attention (everyone at the table, at least), and began sharing with them our history, our off and on friendship from over the years, how she used to date my best friend and how awkward it was for me, years later, to consider asking her out from a weird sense of respect (and guilt!) to a now decades old high school relationship! I added that some year and a half ago, she asked me out to see the movie, Dungeons and Dragons. I did kind of pull that out of her though. "Wanna se a movie?" She asked. "What, are you asking me out on a date?" "Well.... geez. If it HAS to be...." Since then, we've been stuck to each other like house flies on a glue strip, much to the frustrations of most people around us as we express our goofy, Scooby-Doo silliness and idiotic affections.

Back to the concert (and my point), at the end of my ramblings to my captive table mate audience, I paused, took a nervous breath turning to meet Kel's eyes as she firmly shook her head left to right willing me to not embarrass the living hell out of her with whatever prank she has come to expect of me at any given moment, assuming this moment would be no different. In her defense, I did have a few drinks in me by this point, but my energy was from a different buzz.

She had not yet noticed the ring I was holding sheepishly, in my right hand. The others at the table knew exactly what was happening and already had their mobile cameras out and framing us in anticipation of the ask.

I, assuming that she knew what I was setting up, kept smiling in agreement watching her slowly, but very deliberately, mouth the words, "Do NOT do this..." as her head shake continued. She was literally saying no before I could ask, but I was already halfway through my awkward presentation. Too, I had an expecting audience that needed closure at this point, so I swallowed my nerves and disappointment and mushed through for the formal ask and incoming let down believing that I, in all honest goodness, was about to ruin this night for her if she was already saying no.

As she continued shaking her head slowly left to right, I asked, "So, I don't suppose you might wanna marry me, would you?" Her embarrassment broke and a smile immediately took over as she replied, "Yes." Doubtful, I asked again. Then a third time to confirm she knew wtf I just asked of her. She smiled and gave two additional confirmations.

The table clapped and I could hear a cheerful, "Congrats, Noel and Shelly!"

Oh. The concert was pretty good too.

For those who haven't heard of it, Major League teams run camps in the offseason at their spring training facilities where people can play on the fields, work with professional trainers, get coached by former players, etc. The Pirates are known for having one of the best, if not the best, camps, and I finally took the plunge. It was quite possibly the most fun I've had in my life, and there were some moments at the end that were as memorable as they were emotional.

Led to that funny scenario where you have to dress warm to go to the airport but then are immediately overdressed when you land, and then you have to do it in reverse when you leave.

Fun as it was, definitely a little more enticing still just by virtue of getting out of Pittsburgh for a week in the middle of the winter.

Yoda was mildly disappointed when he showed up as Jack Sparrow only to discover he misunderstood Pirates Fantasy Camp.

Yoda was more than mildly disappointed there was no Livvy Dunn sighting. His wife, however, was not.

Paul Skenes showed up and reminded Yoda not to crowd the plate with a little chin music.

This fantasy camp reminded Yoda why he should stick to fantasy baseball.

Livvy Dunn still hadn’t shown up by day 2, and the amount of participants dropped by a 3rd.

And something something Yoda was hoping to earn a position much like Vince Papale did for The Eagles.

Just Little League from 9-12.

After that, I started playing softball at 30, which I've done for the last 10 years. Though I do play a lot, it peaks at like nine teams in the summer. I played 168 games last year. Some of that translates, particularly on the fielding side.

Two former major league pitchers, yeah. In the mini-game against the pro staff everybody gets at least one plate appearance against a former big leaguer, though they're not always guys who pitched in the majors. But I was lucky enough to get two, one against each of the still-capable former pitchers in camp: Matt Capps, and Doug Drabek. The photographer got pictures of them both:

Yoda was mildly disappointed when he showed up as Jack Sparrow only to discover he misunderstood Pirates Fantasy Camp.
So the first day I just wore the pants "normally." I'm not sure why I went with the high socks after, but something inspired me to try it, and I liked it way better. Think it looks a lot cooler, too, especially with the black jersey.

Yoda was more than mildly disappointed there was no Livvy Dunn sighting. His wife, however, was not.

Paul Skenes showed up and reminded Yoda not to crowd the plate with a little chin music.
Kinda true! Skenes was there, apparently, though understandably laying low. A lot of Pirates come down there early to work out. Jared Jones was out tossing on one of the side fields, handful of campers crowded around. Technically anyone could've just walked across the field but everyone was refreshingly cool about it all.

But we all got the next-best thing to facing Skenes: they had a state-of-the-art pitching simulator on site. The Pirates *lease* it for $500,000 a year. It can project any pitcher onto the screen and reproduce their velocity, location, and spin rate. The ball comes out of a hole right at their release point.

Of course, they set it to Skenes, which is who everyone was going to ask for anyway. Each fastball came in between 97-100 MPH. Everybody's goal was to make contact--any contact at all--and as a secondary goal, actually hit a fair ball. My wife got the whole thing on tape:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hRkxuxj9KU

This fantasy camp reminded Yoda why he should stick to fantasy baseball.
:p

I actually did far better than I'd expected. I figured the glove work would translate from softball (especially having worked out with a few local campers leading up to the camp), but I wasn't sure about the hitting. But it went great. They don't score errors so everyone's average is inflated, but I hit .737, second-highest in the camp. Turns out the only guy ahead of me was a 6'4" 235-lb guy who used to play at Auburn. I think I can live with that.

The age difference helps (I'm 40 and your typical camper is more like 60). I was the sixth-youngest person at the camp.

I was about 1.5 hours north of there the weekend before last visiting my grandma with Kelly. It would have been worth an extra couple of hours drive time to say hey if timing had lined up.

You were right there just out of Sarasota. I applied to the 3d animation program there at Ringling College of Art and Design back in the late 90s. They bragged about off season MLB training in the area as a selling point. My "math" wasn't up to their 3d coding standards, but they accepted me to their fine art painting program. I stayed at Auburn instead.

Also, Madeira Beach is just NW it looks. Gorgeous beachside rentals if you ever need to warm up again. I hope you had a blast.

‘twas a joke.*

but i am not a fan of putting modern views on ancient dead societies. we can summarize a guess to why they built it that way, but we can’t know for sure why they did. unless you’re telling me they found plans where it specifically states “make it steep so the bodies roll all the way down”.

you’d have less of an argument from me if you had said they did it that way to be closer to the gods and to symbolize the difficulty of the journey to reach them.

hell, i’d even believe a story that goes like this:

builder: “i dunno boss, that looks steep and dangerous and difficult. we can’t do that.”

boss: “do it, or yours is the first body i’m throwing from the top after i get the second bidder to build it”

;)

you’d have less of an argument from me if you had said they did it that way to be closer to the gods and to symbolize the difficulty of the journey to reach them.

hell, i’d even believe a story that goes like this:

builder: “i dunno boss, that looks steep and dangerous and difficult. we can’t do that.”

boss: “do it, or yours is the first body i’m throwing from the top after i get the second bidder to build it”

;)

I'm chining in.

Yes they were made for their deities. And human sacrifice was part of their rituals.

Many cultures practiced human sacrifice as a reverence to their Gods.

The one in Central America, dedicated to the God Quetzalcoatl, when the sun hits it at certain times of the year, looks like a Snake coming down. Quetzalcoatl was called The Serpent God.

He even has a beautiful bird named after him. Quetzalcoatl had beautifulf feathers., as does the bird.

I saw a documentary that offered another reason for why they designed the steps as they did (which paints these ancient & violent folks as architectural & environmental geniuses for being able to figure all this out)...

The way the sun hit the steps formed a shadow which moved as the sun (or really the Earth) moved, and that moving shadow was like an animation that resembled a snake (their god) slithering down the side of the structure as the sun moved toward sunset.

It was the Serpent God I mentioned.

There are many documentaries on him. He was the most violent one.

Hell I would visit Castle Čachtice because I find what the previous owner did, as interesting.

These things don't bother me..

What gets me is they were so advanced that they could build these ingenious structures that had real-time, shadow animations built into them that reacted to and coincided with the movement of sunlight... yet still felt they had to murder masses of people as sacrifices to their gods.

I have to admit, I've always had a macabre interest in such subjects.

I condemn any such things on a moral & ethical level, yet find them eminently interesting to study in a historical context (maybe that's why Apocalypto is one of my favorite films... but not just for the horrific scenes, I also really like seeing the bad guys get theirs in a movie!) :)

But if you think about their society at that time period, they don't feel the same as society now.

This is something people need to consider.

Just like animal abuse in older films. They didn't have organizations like they do now.

Oh, I get it.
If I had a time machine and went back to witness an Aztec sacrifice, I might not be the hero by single-handedly trying to fight off hordes of thousands (and quickly be killed in the process or risk being sacrificed myself, not to mention potentially changing history & reality in ways no one can imagine by interfering with time), but at the same time I wouldn't cheer with the rest of the crowd. ;)

There are many factors and mindset is one. They are taught at a young age, meaning the villagers, that this is normal. Most of the people who were sacrificed were prisoners of war. And when they weren't available, it was by lot. This was practice by the Druids, Vikings and Sumerians, as well as other cultures who believed in human sacrifice.

Also, we can view this like kamikaze pilots of Japan. They are "taught" it is better to die at your own hand than to die at an enemy's hand.

Or go watch Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man.

I guess I'm the only person who sees in ancient cultures, the was normal.

I guess as much as I study history and early cultures with torture and sacrifice, I don't see an issue.

AND, You have a modern mindset, not ancient, so you find this wrong . It's only wrong by modern standards.

Remember, there are non Modern religion believers.

Yes, I understand that.

Using Apacalypto again as an example, although it shows ancient cultures, the story is one told in a way that appeals totally to modern ethics (which is why I like it - I'm rooting for the good guy according to how the story is told).

I've jokingly called it Die Hard in the jungle: the victims are innocent people who never harm anyone else (in reality such ultra-peaceful tribes were probably few and far between), while the bad guys are war mongers, conquerors and murderers, so of course we root for a hero from among the victims when they fight back and enjoy seeing the bad guys get their comeuppance. (Then we growl at the end when we see the Spanish ships arriving because we know they will be the disease-bringers that wipe out entire nations and violent aggressors as well).

I'm sure in ancient times Aztecs had similar stories where the heroes were the people of their own cultures, making holy & righteous sacrifices to their gods and must defend themselves from captured slaves who get loose and need to be hunted down, lest they return with a military force of their own. Or stories where Europeans are peaceful explorers of the New World who must defend themselves for the Queen's glory against violent, Godless savages that don't understand "Christian compassion".

Apocolypto, for the most part, is a story. It does have some historical accuracy.

It is a good movie overall.

When I watch a "historical " film. I tend to do research afterwards. I do it with novels as well.

Historical romance novels are part of the reason I enjoy history. If they talk about The Field of Gold, you better bet, I'm going to read up.

This is the same with Serial Killers, Human Sacrifice and the darker. I watch documentary, then I read more.

This caused my love of history to bloom further.

I watched a new show called Hunting History (History Channel > On Demand) last night - it was about the lost colony of Roanoke - one of my favorite historical mysteries.

It didn't have a whole lot of new info, just explored the three foremost theories on where the colonists went. A large concentration was on how difficult it would have been for over 100 people to live off the land in that area, no matter where they went, at that time. Unless they were taken in by peaceful natives who taught them their survival skills - but the question remained; would even compassionate natives risk their own survival by taxing their resources for over 100 newcomers.

Of course, the idea was presented that by the time the colonists might have been taken in by the Croatoans (the friendly natives), there may have been so few of them left alive so as to just be absorbed into the tribe without much trouble. The other two theories seemed to spell quick death for the colonists as it took them into swamps where farming was impossible, hunting and fishing were scarce, and which were riddled with angry natives who already had a beef with white intruders due to recent past violence from Europeans.

A few months back, we (company) got word that we were allowed to be part of an Alabama Business group to Poland. Basically, it's a state grant for small businesses to travel out of country to encourage growth of relatively local business in other countries. The boss and I flew out I believe the 14th of March and returned the 22nd. We had no idea what to expect, but the days turned into 14+ hour speed dating marathons for businesses to meet and pitch in 0.5- to 1-hour segments. It was intense, but a great experience. It wasn't as bad as that implies. Meetings were only 6-8 hours of the day. The rest was fill with prep, shutdown, travel, and BS social events. We made a few connections that might lead to contracts down the road, but the learning experience alone was worth the time and effort.

Following are several pics that I was able to grab on my mobile as time allowed. We spent 4 days in Warsaw, Poland, following by 2 days in Rzeszow, Poland.

Yet another dark lager. Not as good as the Danish brand though. Fork added for scale, as I did not have a banana. FYI: A lot of these U.S. guys are retired military. I'm not sure they slept at all that week after finding the bars. P.S. I am a chronic nail biter. I stopped maybe a month before the trip, but this was the best I could do in that time.

My last night in Rzeszow. After a few drinks to chase that pig knuckle, I bought (and smoked) my FIRST ever cigar.

Boss and I were told to try this local restaurant walking distance from the Warsaw Hotel. We couldn't find it the first time in, but lucked up and noticed it driving back from Rzeszow. This was not an entrance. Instead, it was an opening to an alleyway. At the very end was an unlocked and unlabeled, heavy, wooden door. I got Hostel (2005) vibes. Entering, we had to step up a half flight of stairs. the bar was to our left, a small disco DJ setup to our right. The entire room was decorated in pink accents and neon. There was only one other person dining. We were guided to a table and noticed, on the wall, digital screens playing loops of stylish fashion imagery. Eventually, those images evolved into more euro clubbing fashion, then farther still into what I assumed to be weird club BDSM and drug-induced rave vibes. Trippy. I fearfully ordered roast duck and a tiramisu. The bill was on me as I lost a bet trying to find this place.

106792
Roast duck, cabbage, and I think some type of baked banana?

106793
Heading back home. View from the Delta Sky Lounge, Atlanta, GA. Access was on the boss. That's his world, not mine.
