What a terrifying monster. I would pat Did.
With an s. Stupid auto-correct.
Today was the best Saturday I've head in a very, very long time.
I commissioned a local artist who has been fostered by none other than Jim Jarmusch. His name is Antony Zito. He is a super efficient painter specializing in portraits, but also delves in collage work and music. I had him paint my muse from an outdated series, Venus. While he painted, I left one camera on him while I scavenged his home and yard, grabbing all of the photos and video footage I could with my Nikon. I will post a video shortly, along with a musical performance we did in his living room. I would have stayed longer but his beautiful Russian girlfriend was in town and he needed my payment to take her out for a night on the town.

I can still smell the fresh paint as I hang this right beneath my David Bowie rendering, as Ziggy Stardust.

In the late 80s our house was pretty badly damaged in a mortar bomb attack. I was doing some work behind the oil tank today and found these, Coke can for scale:
http://i.imgur.com/gAwfnuX.jpg
It's shrapnel from the vehicle the mortars were placed on, which blew up when one of the mortars failed to launch, showering the area with these. We found one like this sticking in the front lawn like a javelin. The house needed a new roof windows and, bizarrely, door handles - the blast blew a number of the outside door handles clean off.
I can remember the noise as if it were yesterday. Memories, eh? :)

I lived in Brum for 7 years. Never had even a hint of a bad reaction to my accent in all the time I was there. Something I can't say for the rest of England. ;)

During the bad times of the IRA in England, I felt terrible for the Irish people I knew there. They had nothing to do with the IRA, but many of them felt guilty.
+1 specifically for the orange pants.

This is a bit of a contemplative film short I made of artist Antony Zito painting Venus for me. This now hangs on my wall, still smelling fresh of paint (when I press my nose up to it, that is).

He's a great talent. His father was a stone carver and painter. I'm trying to find a good spot for the painting. Right now it's under Bowie, which may change. I'll snap a photo once I figure it out :)

oh it was the best :D i had a good turn out of people, and even though they predicted rain it turned out to just be overcast. also my husband being a chef really helped lol, he did a fine job with all the prep and cooking and he made it look effortless; also i know it's weird to be proud of someone for potato salad, but he made, like, the best ever potato salad and everyone all day was like "omg this potato salad is so good" and i was like MATT MADE IT FROM SCRATCH
cause, you know how potato salad is one of those things people are picky about. anyway
he still had lots of time to socialize and enjoy himself too. i remember, because he kept grabbing my ass when we were swimmin :shifty:
but yeah it was really good and fun and all that good stuff
i know it's weird to be proud of someone for potato salad

The family farm is half a mile away, but I live in a cottage with a couple of fields next to it. I rent the fields out mostly, but when the mood (and cash) takes me I buy and rear a few sheep or cattle.

Since there was some interest in one of the HOF threads about a painting I did for my nan last week, I decided to share it here. I am not an artist and hadn't painted anything in 2 years, but I couldn't very well say no to my grandmother haha.
Her exact request was: "those fluffy trees like the ones you do, in red. Red and wine colours". Which confused me for awhile, but two family members have forest paintings from me that are quite similar, so I figured she just wanted more of that. I was correct since she loved it, even though I hate how muddy the colours at the top are.
http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p189/Rineya/Paintings/nan_zpsptcywngi.jpg
And yes I'm aware it looks a bit like a river of blood haha. The sky was supposed to be darker, more like sunset. But I didn't get it quite right and then it was too late to fix.
That's amazing, Cos. I love it.

I just read that you were going to post a pic of your painting, and of course I was interested...I figured it would be cool, but that's super cool! I love the use of two primary 'hot' colors... and wine-red foliage and water, how avant garde! Really, I'm not being just nice, that's a painting that would make me stop and look at it. Very provocative and yet as the colors are muted it's also amazingly enough, calming.
But now I feel bad:p as I was planning on entering an oil painting in my state fair but missed the deadline. That's like 3 years in a row that I was going to do it, but didn't. Oh well! it's not like I could paint anyway. But you can! You should enter that your work in a local fair or art show. Our state fair has a number of amazing art pieces each year and I always enjoy looking and being impressed by what talented people can do.

Thank you very much! I'm glad to hear it looks nice (from someone other than my nan haha) since I couldn't tell if it was too many different colours of red, or not enough haha. If I was making it for myself it probably would've been bolder, but it's nice to hear that the more muted palette works.

I'm sure you're just being too critical of your own work (l know I frequently am). I wouldn't be able to work with oil. I'm much more hands-on, and would definitely need buckets of turpentine for clean-up haha. I only use acrylic, but have considered branching out into watercolours, especially since I already use water with the acrylics more often than not (to aide with blending, to keep it from drying too quickly, to help spread it over the canvas, or to thin out a paint or create a wash).
I don't think I'd had the confidence to enter my art into some kind of showcase like that, but I would like to do recreations of matte paintings from older sci-fi films and tv series (like Forbidden Planet, Star Trek: The Original Series, Flash Gordon, etc.) to try and sell at the local sci-fi conventions. There's a convention coming up next month, so I'm going to take a look at the quality and prices the current regular artists have. I'd then have until April to make enough to sell (if I decide to go that route).
Not an artist?!? Ha! Yeah right. That's amazing.

I gotta tell ya, having the muted colors above brings out the detail of the forest floor and "blood" river much more. So does having a more brighter yellow for the sky. Going darker could have caused things to get lost in one another. The contrast works far, far better.
Same about the wine coloring to the leaves and the river along with the dark gray of the tree bark.
Reminds me of a Bob Ross painting with a wonderful fantastical feel to it.

Even if it's just a line of paint on an otherwise blank canvas, you should go for it! I always think of that scene with Mel Gibson in Expendables 3, where he sees some extremely expensive modern art he thinks is hideous but buys it anyway. There's a market for every kind of painting (even if it is just used for smuggling).

Thank you! However it would be a pretty barren thread since that was only like, the 8th painting I've ever done. I guess such a thread could include some of the crafting work I've done (costume props, etc) as well. I'll have to think about it.

We have a huge state fair! It's been going on for 117 years. It has a huge grandstand with top name acts, the grounds are 54 acres, it's big!. Pretty much everybody has performed there.
I've entered the photography competition for the last 18 years, and I have to get busy to submit my photos for this year.

That's interesting to me because I just assumed every state had one. Wisconsin's has been around since 1851, I believe. It is held in a suburb of Milwaukee, actually. I may be wrong, but I heard somewhere (a long time ago now) that ours is the most urban of the fairs - at least in the Midwest. I know a lot of people actually come here from Chicago because the Wisconsin State Fair is closer to them than the Illinois State Fair is.
I used to go a lot when I was a kid. We always went at night because it was too hot during the day. Then I just stopped going. I went one time back in 2005 (it was probably my first time in 10 years). I didn't care for it at all. I don't know what it was. Maybe if I had been going continuously for all the years, but I stopped, and it just wasn't as good as I remember from when I was a kid - and that is probably because I was a kid and it all seemed so much fun then. There were just too many people and everything is so expensive.
All I know is I have to always remember to avoid driving in the area in early August because then you get stuck in traffic.
I've entered the photography competition for the last 18 years, and I have to get busy to submit my photos for this year.
Is there a theme to the photos that get submitted, or can it be anything that you like?

...Is there a theme to the photos that get submitted, or can it be anything that you like? There are categories with different rules. Some categories like: travel, photo journalism, nature...can't be embellished with a photo editing program like PhotoShop.
In other words if you have a photo of the pyramids for the travel category, you can't Photoshop a camel into the foreground.
But in the other categories you can alter the photo as much as you want. One guy use to Photoshop a little girl onto the back of butterflies like she was riding it like a horse. I thought it was stupid, but he often won awards.
It took me years just before I got a photo excepted as there's lots of entries by really serious photographers and they get better every year. I have to get busy on this project if I'm going to get some good ones.

same here in Michigan. It was on the northern border of Detroit and some 5-10 yrs ago they moved it out, off the highway some 30 miles west of Detroit. It doesn't have as much room so, sadly, it has been condensed a bit. Checked it out last year for the first time since they moved it.
I remember seeing Alice Cooper at the original location back in the eighties and the early nineties.

The problem is that when I attach a photo and post it at MoFo, it gets condensed and the image ends up looking blurry a bit. It so disappointing, to see a sharp image turned blurry. I think I would have to use a photo hosting site to maintain the full quality...but not Photobucket! It's not working anymore for third party photos. I might look for another photo hosting site.
BTW, good cameras these days, aren't expensive. Usually the real expensive ones have way more features than anyone would every use.

That's cool. So no photoshop whatsoever, including lighting and cropping etc? I get a bit eye sore from seeing too many over pushed photos in those categories. Do they have a category for film? I like seeing a return to those these days.

In all categories you can do tweaking with photoshop: color, lightness, sharpness, cropping, etc but you can't add an element from another photo in some categories.
Photos made from film negative and digital are exhibited together. There's no distinction made, that is they don't say if the photo is from film or digital.

Sounds great. And I hope I didnt come across as anti photoshop purist. I'm not at all - I think it's a real art form. I just dont like the look of photos so processed they no longer look like photos, if you get my drift. Looking forward to seeing your entries and how you go, Rules.

I follow a lot of travel photographers and what gets me even more is the current trend of taking a photo of a camera on a tripod taking a photo. Like wut? I'll see if I can find the top 50 photographers in the world I saw a bit earlier. I love this guy but I really dont get the camera in the shot. Really takes me out of the moment.

When you find one that you like the best, let me know, please. I've never used anything but Photobucket for the past 10 years, and now my pictures are gone on this site. :( So I just don't really know which one would be the absolute best. There are so many to choose from, but I don't know which one I should settle on.
BTW, good cameras these days, aren't expensive. Usually the real expensive ones have way more features than anyone would every use.
I will to search for the list of cameras that I had picked out and PM them to you and see if you can give me your opinion on them. I know what I want, but I am not too sure what to choose. I was still using my 35mm in 2015. It was an excellent camera, but I don't know if the photos didn't turn out so well because it is, basically, done for, or it was the film. And I want a digital that is very similar to that 35mm, but I will save the details for a PM. :)

What category would you be entering in?
My wife and I usually go every year to the Wisconsin State Fair. We are not going this year though.
I would like to go again. I kind of feel like maybe I didn't have the right mind-set then (something not-so-nice happened to me at that time and I think that may have affected my attitude towards things in life right then). I want to think it is as enjoyable as I once thought it was. What I really love doing - and have since I was a kid - is see what they are selling there. And the person I went with had NO interest in that. I think that brought my fair-going experience down a little, too. I am not as into the rides anymore (although I don't mind the games). As for the food, I don't have that much interest in any of it (except the lasagna on-a-stick and fish and chips on-a-stick sound good to me). I don't even need to wait in line for a Cream Puff because I can actually get a much better one at the Pick 'n Save near the fair. :yup: But still, at some point, I may go again just to try it one more time.
500px seems to be high quality..for a 35mm format in digital you can go with a crop sensor like a Nikon D5200..affordable for a dslr, great sensor, just get a lens with a max of 1.8 and you have some headroom to play with :)

They HAVE gotten incredibly cheaper and there are some amazing ones out there. My room mate has a digital camera that she uses.
The only thing holding me back is more bills to be paid than money to use on toys ;):)
And Dani8, I agree about over use of photoshop. Getting the shot with the equipment in your hand is more impressive to me.
I appreciate what photoshop has to offer, I use Corell for colorizing my pen & ink work. But there does need to be a cut off from taking photography and creating a computer graphic image using a photograph as stock.
I remember the huge debate regarding 3D computer art and whether it was actual art and should be included with paintings and so forth (which was labeled, at that time, as 2D art)
