I was just this morning sitting outside in a ray of sun enjoying the beautiful noise of tuesday morning in my garden, the workers next door, dogs barking hello at school kids on holidays walking by their front gates, cars and trucks and emergency vehicles trundling along to wherever their destinations, birds birds and more birds talking away to each other, all whilst admiring a dandelion in the grass as I sipped my coffee. The beauty of a humble weed. No long an odious pest but a little flower that gives such joy in my 3 year old heart as I sat in my mother's garden.

One of my besties visited me in hospital way back (feels like an eternity) when Iwas in hospital either just before or just after xmas and sh took a selfie of us in the front grounds of the 'hotel' .Wow what a huge difference between very very sick and sick can make.

I bought a wig the other day. probably scratchey on my bald head but I've got little skull stockings for that so really should try it out. Bargain at $12 at my favourite salvation army store which has become such a hub of activity around me since I came home this time. I'm more of a hat person but nothing wrong with playing dress ups at any age and with any style, I say.

I saw a stunning vintage mink coat the other day which would really suit me, but I just cant justify the fact that beautiful animals were annally electrocuted for vanity. If it had been one animal who last century had been killed instantly by a huntress in the woods to feed her village I might have thought differently; I'm not sure.

Don't forget my arthouse ratings. :mrt: I always thought them condescending as in: "I generally don't like arthouse movies, and my regural rating for this one is pretty low too, but compared to other arthouse films this one was passable, so I will give it a higher arthouse rating". Dunno if this is your mindset when giving them, but it surely looks like it to me. I'd rather see just one low rating for a film than a division into a regular and arthouse ratings. I dread to think what happens if that arthouse film is also a cult one. :P

I know, right. I dont know which generation brought in tans as such a sun seeking thing of beauty. My mum died of melanoma at a VERY young age so sun chasers are not something I've ever felt were attractive to look at, the same with people who are addicted to cosmetic surgery. There was a steward on our flight from LAX to Indianapolis when we were in Usa and to me he was a really attractive man just going by his bone structure, hair etc BEFORE he had god knows how many surgeries. Each to their own and his confidence was overflowing so he's the only one it matters to as he preens in the mirror each day. I doubt he gives two hoots about strangers on a plane judging him. Good name for a movie right? Lol I dont think so!

Vintage is just having a revival here in sydney thanks to the hipster crowd, I think. I really like it. Pretty strange it would actually be happening in this ultra conservative suburb I live in, but just going by the hipster definition I dont think it's too strange at all, really. I'm just ruminating as I type. I love hipsters, just as long as they dont brow people, same as any subculture.

ETA I use leather because I think the whole animal is used, but since coming to mofo I've been having a big shake up in my thinking. 'Vegan leather' made from bambo osuddenly appear before my eyes the other day and I bought it immediately.It's so lovely to touch. I think it was supposed to be Coco Chanel, but that might be an apocryphal story. Basically it's a status thing, as pale skin before it was. Pale skin meant you didn't work outside (back when almost all work was agricultural and, therefore, had money) later the tan became a status symbol for similar, if opposite reasons. It meant you could fly to the sun. Now I've heard of a thing called a millionaire tan, which is a light tan, meant to look like you've been out all day, every day, but with something like a thin shirt on or sitting in the shade for the most part.

Valpurgis. It wasn't terribly big as it's too residential. At first it was cordoned off for safety, then once it burned down a bit, it was "released" and I got close.

The one in Skansen is pretty big. They go all out. The one we picked out was sedate enough, with customary accompanying choir. :lol:

Yeah, it's still its original 300-odd acres. We rent out some of the fields to a couple of farmers for 6 months of the year and keep sheep on the rest. My uncle and aunt were both teachers so it was a part time exercise for them.

Turns out he was chipped (I thought he might be), but he had a lot of goop by his eye, no collar, and I'd seen him in two different yards, so I decided to play it safe. I've seen him before but his eye looked fine then and he was just sitting in a well-manicured lawn so I decided he might just be a half-owned cat that was regularly fed but otherwise outside, but seeing him again with a little health issue seemed like reason enough to bring him in.

Years ago I had Dootle-bug with me on a leash for a visit to PetSmart. Her collar was a notch too loose out fear of it being too tight. Leaving the store, she took a step back in Just the right angle that her collar slipped over head. I panicked and stepped to grab her but she, of course, thought it was a game so she darted.

3 solid figure-eights through the parking lot with me chasing after. I thought for sure she would be hit or just continue running toward the horizon, forever. I figured maybe if I stopped chasing, puppy reverse psychology might give me an edge. I keeled and outstretched my arms and sure enough, her last curve back she jumped right into my lap. I was so terrified I had lost her!

In that context, I can see a pet getting away just from dumb luck and ignorance by the owner. Still though, I read too many posts on Facebook claiming someone stole their dog only for it miraculously wander home 2 days later. There are a LOT of outdoor pets out here not bound by fences. They just go off whenever. Maybe they return. Maybe not.

Db was an indoor pup with a fenced back yard. Still though, she could wedge through a gate if she really tried.

My indoor cat Jasper has gotten out several times. Usually it's due to careless housemates leaving a door open, but he's also managed to push out window screens or pry open the sliding screen door and get loose that way. I'm fortunate that he's never been missing for more than a few hours and that the worst that happened was him getting beat up by neighborhood cats.

Working at vet clinics, I've also seen and heard of cases where cats have gotten loose because they've managed to break out of carriers or because a carrier door wasn't properly latched.

S*** happens. A pet cat being on the loose doesn't automatically mean it's been neglected or abandoned.

Yoda, Wonder if they will try to return him to his owner since he is chipped? I always have mixed feelings about that as I doubt the care & attention given to animals by their owners who have somehow lost their pets. Never lost an animal in my life though I guess it can happen.

I hate to be a nag, but you are sure this shelter doesn’t euthanize?


Years ago I had Dootle-bug with me on a leash for a visit to PetSmart. Her collar was a notch too loose out fear of it being too tight. Leaving the store, she took a step back in Just the right angle that her collar slipped over head. I panicked and stepped to grab her but she, of course, thought it was a game so she darted.

3 solid figure-eights through the parking lot with me chasing after. I thought for sure she would be hit or just continue running toward the horizon, forever. I figured maybe if I stopped chasing, puppy reverse psychology might give me an edge. I keeled and outstretched my arms and sure enough, her last curve back she jumped right into my lap. I was so terrified I had lost her!

In that context, I can see a pet getting away just from dumb luck and ignorance by the owner. Still though, I read too many posts on Facebook claiming someone stole their dog only for it miraculously wander home 2 days later. There are a LOT of outdoor pets out here not bound by fences. They just go off whenever. Maybe they return. Maybe not.

Db was an indoor pup with a fenced back yard. Still though, she could wedge through a gate if she really tried.

Yep my now blind fluffy found a hole in the hole-free gate and went on a couple of adventures, doors haven't been closed by us and visitors. It happens. Yoda has done good for a number of people's pets. Stuff happens. I left chocolates for the kind Samaritans each time and thankfully there are good Samaritans who do the right thing!

Was driving to work this morning, noticed a turtle crossing the road on what might as well have been the highway. Pulled over and ran back. It was really narrowly avoiding being run over (a few cars went directly over it). Picked it up, realized it was a snapping turtle. Opened its mouth wide and tried to bite me a few times.

Put it on the floor of the passenger seat (the dog in the back, thankfully, was mostly cool about all this) and brought it in with me. Showed some people, talked about putting it down by the river or in the nearby pond. Noticed it had a hook in its mouth! Someone tried to pull it out but it seemed really stuck. Called around about what to do, did a little research. Thankfully, read that the hooks usually rust a little and then come out. Made the decision to try to snap off the end, at least, but while someone was trying to do that the whole thing came out!

Hope we didn't hurt the poor thing too bad, hard to tell with an animal like this. But there wasn't too much flesh or blood on the hook, and it ran off into the yard (we hope/think it'll find the pond shortly), and it seemed pretty energetic in general, so I think it should be okay.

Forgot to mention: when I came back to get it out of the car, it had stuck its head under the front seat, and every time I tried to pick it up it hissed loudly, dug its claws into the fabric and basically just fought like hell to not be moved. For awhile I was at a total loss and wondered if I was going to end up staying at work late because a turtle refused to get out of my car, but I slide the seat back and prodded it a little and that did the trick.

The thing was pretty darn feisty.

Yoda, wow, now I see the photo I would never have picked it up. I’m sure the relief of losing the hook from its mouth negated any discomfort you caused it. Sad how there is so much crud around - hooks, trawler nets, garbage in the oceans - that cause suffering to critters. Kudos to you!

Theory here is that someone caught it by mistake and released it, but without bothering to remove the hook (or maybe they tried and failed, or assumed it would be too hard). No idea how it ended up that far from the river, though.

I think it did. The place where it walked off was very close to the pond in question, which is close to a creek. Have to imagine any animal that likes the water is capable of finding it if it's at all nearby. And it was really moving across that street, too, and in the right general direction towards the river.

Anyway you can get him back to water? Easiest thing would be to get him in a blanket & transport him by the corners of the blanket so it doesn’t bite you. Not that he can’t survive on land, but afraid a car will hit him.

We're thinking about it. The road in that photo is a small driveway with a lot of grass and a pond nearby, so it's not too bad. There's river nearby we might take him to, though. Gonna do some more research to make sure it's where he belongs.
