He left us a box full of pop rocks with a bunch of brownies in it. Not sure if I agree with the recipe, but I will tell you how we liked it the next time we sit down to watch a film with some snacks.

He also bequeathed his many attempts at fashion design. He covered all our black clothing with fur, which I am sure he thought would be dashing.

Sorry about the gallows humor, but it helps a bit.

Bert had what the vet thought was perhaps a tumor in his head, and was suffering from kidney problems, as well. It was time.

When we arrived at the vet, they informed us that some people just drop their pets off to be euthanized. Wow. I just can;t imagine doing that. Lisa and I held him and looked into his eyes as he went, as we wanted him to know he was loved all the way until the end. Man, that stripped us to the core something fierce, but we didn't want him alone in a cold room with some stranger.

Godspeed, Bert! :bawling:

As long as those brownies are actually brownies I'm sure they'll be luvverly ;)

I know gallows humour can help hence my quip about the treasure map. As you may or may not remember we sadly lost our oldest earlier this year. Unfortunately we were in full lockdown over here at the time and there was no choice other than to say goodbye to him at the door of the vets - something which absolutely broke my heart as I couldn't be with him letting him know he was loved right to the end :( The poor guard at the Garda checkpoint on the way home probably wished he hadn't had to stop us to ask the reason for our journey.

Who knows, maybe Bert and PF will be friends up in puddy heaven - requiescat in pace both xx

It’s what my husband & I have always done. But I won’t do it again. I’m not sure that people “drop off” their pets - sounds like they’re leaving their dry cleaning. They take the pet in, but for whatever reason cannot bear to stay. I can relate to this.

This has been cowardly behavior on my part & will not happen again.

Oof, here I am with my foot in my mouth. I guess I didn't think that through very well before posting. I didn't consider that some people would be too distraught, which seems totally obvious now that I think about it. I'm an ass!

Sorry about that!

Same goes to anyone else who has had to deal with leaving their pet at the vet. :(

Gee, I wasn’t chastising you. Especially at such a devastating time. It is brave of you to do this & it’s the right thing to do. But I can’t imagine how painful it must be to see one’s beloved animal go over the rainbow bridge.

I copped that chore coat off eBay the other day. It even has a removable wool liner.

I wasn’t crazy about it at first but I mainly got it for range days. But I dunno. It is really growing on me. Might even win out as my new favorite jacket.

Task Rabbit, Meet Chore Coat
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/18/style/mens-style-tasks-rabbit-meet-chore-coat.html?referringSource=articleShareOh, I knew. I am a trendsetter. ;)

I do follow fashion quite a bit so I usually know what's in and what's not, and I am also pretty good about guessing what will be the next big thing. Of course, I rarely ever adopt new trends. I am not one to follow the in crowd or fab fashion, and I have always blazed my own path: how else can you explain the 20+ Members Only jackets in my closet?

But yeah, I had a feeling chore coats were going to make a comeback this fall/winter, and I had always wanted one. It is very much my style: laid back and ready to get dirty.

Speaking of fashion and Members Only:

Haha, great minds! I used to hate on Eddie Bauer’s footwear but I finally picked up a pair of mesh chukkas and those boots: I have been pleasantly surprised by both. The above boots are especially great on cold/wet days.

I still prefer my 5.11 ATAC boots but they don’t make those with insulation. :(

Sedai
11-20-20, 04:56 PM
I have my eye on a 5.11 backpack, but probably won't pick it up until the next hiking season.

John McClane
11-20-20, 05:34 PM
Yeah, I don't own any other gear from 5.11 besides the two pair of boots I have, but I used to have a pair of Class A pants when I worked at the hotel. They were the most professional pair of pants I have ever worn. Never showed the slightest bit of fading and even had a rubber backing in the waistband that prevented my shirt from coming untucked. Then I lost weight and I was swimming in them.

Suffice to say, I have nothing but good things to say about 5.11.

But these days, when it comes to bookbags, I only buy Samsonite or Timbuk2. Which 5.11 bag are you looking at?

Sedai
11-20-20, 05:54 PM
Which 5.11 bag are you looking at?

The LV18 in natural colors. This bag will be used strictly out in the field for outdoors/woods activities. I have a smaller urban pack for my around town use, but we need a bag that is a bit larger to hike with, as we have to have enough room for our gear, as well as toddler stuff.

I have a larger overnight pack (A Teton Explorer 4000) but that is too big for day hikes.

I also have an external frame pack from Kelty, but I am not sure the capacity. It is probably closer to 50L. I haven’t used that one in years, but I would be remiss to get rid of it since it is so hard to find packs with external frames these days.

At my all-girls British prep school, any girl who was in any way “doofy”, unattractive, eager-to please, “soppy” was immediately labeled as a “drip”. Probably one of the worst things one could be called when all one wants is to be hip. And the description unfortunately followed her until graduation.

Don’t know what this means. The Ghost in the Machine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ghost_in_the_Machine) is a philosophical work written by Arthur Koestler, and it is a term coined by Gilbert Ryle. It deals with the dualist concept of the mind-body relationship. In short, it is a work that is critical of the idea that the mind and body are separate and independent entities.

Here is a very simple explanation from the attached Wiki entry: "Koestler shares with Ryle the view that the mind of a person is not an independent non-material entity, temporarily inhabiting and governing the body."

The only one at the office, I presume. Then again, there's never a bad time to namedrop one of The Police's best albums.Yeah, it's a joke about me being the only one at the office, and it's also a joke about me being super white (à la Casper the Ghost).

I am highly considering using it as the title for my next EP (whenever I can get it finished, of course), so thanks for reminding me about The Police's usage of it. It has been a long while since I have listened to it. I will add that to my to-do list as research.

Serious note, they're trees...

They need daylight, not too much not too little, because they're small and can't root too much... so partial shade from both the sun and the wind, but again, not too much wind if the pot is shallow, will allow for them to root strongly... but a too shallow pot won't allow for deep enough roots to account for the wind they receive.

It's a balancing act with Bonsai.

Root depth with the wind coverage... amount of sun compared to amount of shade compare to the North/South coverage of the Sun... and also take into account the tree's needs in terms of amount of water as well from rainfall/watering... and also the acidity of said water.
Tap water doesn't suit some trees, but other tree don't care.
Some only go for rain water, so a tree from a warm climate will hate a wet climate, no matter what the care you take.

Then there's the sheer amount of water they get... as in, the soil and the species of tree... and the temperament they live in.
Too cold, too hot... etc etc...

I can go on :D

The Rodent
06-11-21, 08:08 PM
Quick guide to Bonsai for a beginner:

Go for Japanese Acer.
Also called Acer Palmatum

Go for green leaved rather than red.

Use a pot that has 8-12 inches of depth.

Soil... any type, but make sure it can drain well. Stone in the bottom of the pot allow for drainage.

Start with a twig around a 5mm thick, and around 6 inches tall.

Plant said twig off-centre in the pot. Square pot or round, doesn't matter. Off-centre the tree.

Allow to grow at own pace for around 2 years. 2 Summers basically.

After 2 years, repot with fresh soil into the same pot, AND DO NOT CUT THE ROOT BALL.

After those 2 Summer's worth of growth have gone by... you can wire it into shape using plain zinc wire, or anchors to pull branched downwards and leave to grow for 5-7 years. Cut off any "too tall" growth as it grows from year to year.
A Bonsai will try to grow tall due to the pot being shallow. Cut it down do it doesn't go above 8-12 inches tall at any point.
This will thicken it up, and also thicken the trunk.

Repeat above steps ^^... and repeat forever.
And ever.

Acer Palmatum, like mine, are perfect for amateurs...

They like any climate, warm or cold, tap water, rain water... they even live through harsh frosts and winters.
Make sure though, any deformed leaves, clip them immediately... this encourages the tree to grow only health shaped leaves. Sounds odd, but an Acer that's allowed to grow deformed leaves, eventually ALL the leaves will be deformed.
Use a good drainaged pot, again stones at the bottom of the pot help with that... and twice a year, as in February before growth season, and June-July during mid growth season, give them a heavy dose of soil enriching plant feed, like Baby-Bio:
This stuff...
https://www.indoor-plants.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/baby-bio-original-plant-food.jpg

Once you've cultivated your Bonsai after maybe 3 years, you'll know how to treat it.

One thing I've found though, is Nippon Insect Spray is great stuff for killing off anything that might eat the leaves.

The Rodent
06-11-21, 08:27 PM
Another note on Bonsai...

Once they're wired, and established after that 2 year period of growing...

DO NOT CHANGE THEIR NORTH/SOUTH

It's tempting to twist and turn the pot they're in.
Do not do this.

A tree roots and grows dependent on the movement of the Sun.

If you look at my Acer ^^... it is "pointing to the left" in that picture.
My tree "points" directly south.

I tried one year and turned the pot so it pointed north... and it near died.

Once the tree is established... never turn the pot.

I see quite a few. Especially in a large grassy cemetery I sometimes walk through. They are very frightened of people & run away keeping very low & very fast.

And it’s only very recently that I found out that a woodchuck is a groundhog. Initially I thought they were dark brown possums.

So it's October. Might as well post up an old halloween costume. This is from a few years back when the office did halloween parties during officer hours. We would all dress up and play games for half the day. One was a spooky scavenger hunt that forced teams to confront people with interviews or take photos of themed list items for points. I believe this one was to ask strangers what their favorite halloween candy was. I'm the one under the heat blanket of a costume on the right, asking this poor guy random questions.

I did make a kid cry in K-mart though =\

May post more past costumes if I find more.

Moar Halloween stuffs.

YEEEEEARS ago I bought a clown jumpsuit, a wig, some make-up, shoes, some rainbow suspenders and a uh... white thermal long sleeve undershirt. I spritzed some orange and yellow food coloring onto the pits and neck of the shirt to look like sweat and put my hair into a net. When set, I rolled the top half of the suit into the pants and clamped on the rainbow suspenders to the lower half. That worked very well and revealed the stained undershirt.

That morning, I stopped at (and stumbled through) a gas station (in full costume) to buy a bottle of Gatorade, Boone's Farm (to later pour the gatorade into and drink from while wandering aimlessly about town, dumping the Boone's out, of course), a pack of Newports, and one box of condoms. The register guy didn't know what to do. I told him it was for balloon animals.

That's Gatorade in the paper bag. I'm not a for real drunk clown. I don't smoke either, but I felt having a lipstick-soaked half a bent up cig just barely hanging onto the edge of my bottom lip just sorta made the costume right.

So that was my gig that day. to deal with randoms walking by and me offering to make a balloon animal only to pull out the wrong balloon, and only noticing when I couldn't get it to inflate. Oh. I also had an old bicycle horn in my pocket. To scare people or for fake drunken cat calls. Whichever seemed reasonable in the moment.

I used to get into characters a lil too deeply, I think.

...

Some years later, a few coworkers talked me into a team event zombie run. It was marketed as like a 5k run through some nearby parkland woods where obstacles were set up for the runners. You could register as a runner or as a zombie. The runners were given three partially inflated balloons to pin to their shirts. Those balloons represented organs. The other option was to dress up as a zombie and register to chase the runners. Our goal was to pop their balloons or snag the little ribbons dangling from their bodies. Of course I went as a zombie.

That hat did jack against the sun that day. I'm missing half a beard and one-third of a mustache so the wounds would look real(er). rrrrrrrrACTING!!!!

I pulled my drunkard clown suit from its dusty crypt and splashed some blood onto it. Fake blood, that is. It was near Halloween so supplies were high. I also created some scabby flesh tears in my face with latex and toilet paper to create ripped flaps of skin. That works pretty well and was easy to apply considering that was my first attempt at such and effect. I also picked up some cheap pantyhose, dumped a handful of large marshmallows in one leg, twist-and-tied a link, then a few more marshmallows, repeat, until the leg was full. I THEN dumped a bottle of clear Karo syrup into a bucket with a small bottle of red food coloring and drenched the marshmallow leggings into the mixture to produce a bloody bowel length. Ya know, so that I could gnaw on something sweet while waiting for the runners.

https://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=82323
Posing with a coworker and a random kid that was all excited other "adults" were playing dress-up. Those intestines were delish, btw. I made a set for the coworker too, with the other Eggs leg. 😁

The organizers carted small groups of us off to sit and wait in certain choke points along the run. We're near a military base, so there were a few young jackasses that took this thing way too serious making it a full-contact sport, but whatever. It was still pretty fun. After the runners/survivors made it past our point, the team would cart us up to the next zone to wait again.

https://www.movieforums.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=82324

Post-run and nearly dead 4realzors tho. After those army brats and I had at it a few rounds, my face was literally falling off. I brought my running shoes though, so they didn't all get through alive.

Wow, That's a cool looking car, why would you want to sell it? (I haven't been reading this thread so didn't see if you had explained why you're selling). Thanks! I kinda fell into it back in 2017 after I got pulled over for an exhaust leak on my POS 1990 Camry. There's a crazy story to be had there if ya wanna hear it.

But I've brought up my back and forth about it in the shoutbox over the past year. Main reason I wanted to sell was the car payment could be put to better use (i.e. paying down some debts faster, investments, etc.) and because the price for selling given to me by Carvana was stupid good due to the car shortage.

After crunching all the numbers and looking at the market for this vehicle I realized that, as painful as it is making my finances, it is in my best interest to see the loan out (another 28 months).

Do you know the initiative called "Museums Night"?
There are different formats but as a whole some cities world wide choose one day in a year to be a "Museums Night". Then all museums and galleries are open till late (usually till midnight) and free of ticket. Meaning that you can walk around the city and enter every museum for free during this evening and they are all open until midnight some of them even till 1.00 AM.

Here is a photo of mine during this evening about two years ago when I follow my fiancée (yellowish jacket) in the Sofia City Gallery to see a traveling exhibition - the amazing photographic heritage created by an enthusiast American woman, unknown during her lifetime.
Do you know Vivian Maier?
