The body likes routine. That's why damage is interpreted as pain; it's not normal, so that seemed a good way for the brain to process the sensation. That's why there are addictions; the body goes, "I need this!" and the brain is programmed to crave it.

yeah, that’s your scalp reprogramming itself. it took a year in college for my hair to adjust to less products/washing. but i’m so glad i did it

So often you hear, “don’t wash your hair!” and by that I mean don’t use any products.
When I try that, my scalp feels likes it’s trying to crawl off my head!

Yeah all I do with my hair is shampoo it. It's fine on its own. The only times I've had anything in my hair that wasn't shampoo or conditioner was when I was on stage, and that was usually just gel and a bit of spray. I've never felt a need to alter any part of my hair than its length.

But I had it short through most of my teen years (it's very thick), and I knew it was easier to manage. So about 10-15 years ago I went back to short hair (and also stopped coloring it). Now it's shorter, still thick, and takes about 3-4 minutes to blow dry. And that's all I do with it. I use an all-natural shampoo bar each morning, and that's it. No conditioner, no "product," no hairspray. Just that shampoo bar, and a quick blow-dry, and I don't have to think about it the rest of the day.
I am clearly a low-maintenance gal.
