I try to use 'real honey' as a substitute more often nowadays. But I also have the same soda problem as McClane.

If I ever became diabetic I will just walk off into the woods and wait to die because my life will effectively be over if I can't drink soda.

For me the really big red flag is when someone apologizes for their behavior...and then later argues that it should be okay. That shows that either the apology was disingenuous, or that their promises go out the window when they're angry/upset/whatever. And from a moderation perspective, there's no meaningful difference between someone who's actively manipulative and someone with no self-control.
