The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Welcome to the MOFO top 100 Comedies Countdown. We have had three months to reflect on the comedies we were already familiar with and to watch new films to broaden our horizons. We left the judgment of what is and what is not a comedy up to you, so there was a lot of nominations, 757 to be exact. We also had 89 ballots, which I believe was the 3rd number of all time for MOFO Countdowns. I want to thank Yoda, Citizen Rules, and Thief for their help while I have been learning how to host my first countdown. I especially want to thank Citizen Kane and Yoda for the graphics they created for this countdown. Yoda handled the graphics for the reveals and Citizen did the above graphic for the countdown. Let's reveal some one-pointers. |
The thread is 19 minutes old and yet there's still no sign of @rauldc14 .....

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
I don't think this will top Captain Spaulding's list in the other thread, but I'll be following along anyways.
|
Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Yes, give the one-pointers to us!
:yup: |
Looking good Citizen. Thank you Diehl and Yoda. Now let’s see some movies

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
The MoFo tradition is to mention the One Pointers. Those are films that received exactly one point, meaning that a single person had them in their last spot of the ballot (25th), with no votes from anyone else.It is common for people here to use that spot to put the spotlight on a rather obscure film, a "hidden gem", or just a bizarre nomination just for kicks
Be prepared, because we had 42 one-pointers The Phantom of Liberty Something's Gotta Give Red Rocket Paul Tickled Club Dread Freaked Night of Something Strange The Fate of the Furious Knick Knack The Toy Mother, Jugs and Speed A Day at the Races American Babylon La guagua aerea Meet the Fockers Megamind Rejected Pink Flamingos I love You Phillip Morris Short Cuts Le Grand Amour The Imposters The Grass is Greener Teen Beach Movie Ruthless People Living in Oblivion Smile Beat the Devil Artists and Models Overboard 1987 Free Guy Boeing, Boeing Weekend at Bernie's The Whole Nine Yards Heavy Trip Scary Movie 4 Seven Samurai Austin Powers in Goldmember Brewster McCloud Dolemite Stroszek |
No one pointer for me I think I'm gonna have alot of movies from my list on to this list

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
I have just revealed the one-pointers. There is one ballot task I have to take care of before I can start the reveals. I will begin the reveals on Monday. I will attempt to have the reveals posted before 11:00a everyday. If I can't get it done before 11:00a it will be after 6:00p, but I that would be a rare circumstance.

Grass Is Greener was my one pointer. Love that snappy, witty dialogue. Which is sure to be a trend for stuff I like as we go. I thought there was a chance some of our classic lovers might put this one on their list.
Also, Seven Samurai is certainly stretching the spirit of this paper thin. Strozek is a pretty good call though. One of my all time faves and very funny. |
https://www.angelfire.com/music6/wal...knickknack.gif
Pixar's 1989 short Knick Knack was mine. Three and half minutes of hilarity and cool music. I love that angry little snowman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uhM_SUhdaw |
Heavy Trip is mine. It's about an up-and-coming heavy metal band and it's probably my favorite movie of 2018. My favorite character is Pasi, who is always spouting metal trivia and quoting songs like Joe Friday on Dragnet. Metal fans and/or Spinal Tap fans would enjoy it.

Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Short Cuts was mine. Fantastic film.
|
Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Club Dread was my one-pointer. I wanted it to be higher, but knew no one on this site would vote for it, so here it is on the special list.
I like all the Broken Lizard films, but since I'm a horror fan, this one speaks to me the most. I think it balances the horror and comedy extremely well, has memorable stupid jokes and Bill f*cking Paxton. Nuff said. |
Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
I have a few that were potential one-pointers, but I just can't help my darn honesty. As usual the list only goes exactly in the order I feel is accurate. Still hoping to see some of my picks here later on!
|
Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Yay, no one pointers for me!
|
Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
I've seen:
The Phantom of Liberty Paul Overboard 1987 (I think so, at least) Scary Movie 4 Seven Samurai (I don't consider this to be comedy) |
My one pointer, Ruthless People, is easily one of the best comedies of the '80s (or ever, for that matter). Dale Launer's script is brilliant, and ZAZ directs with much more flair and dexterity than they exhibited in Airplane!. What pushes the film over the top are the great performances from Danny DeVito, Bette Midler, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater, Bill Pullman, Anita Morris, William G. Schilling, Art Evans and Clarence Felder. Even though the film is consistently funny, the scene where the final ransom dropoff occurs may rank as the funniest scene in screen history. If you don't start to choke from laughter during that scene, then get a new sense of humor. (I hope it's not necessary.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0-_R1YHmuw |
Re: The Movie Forum's Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Could be a good sign that The Titfield Thunderbolt didn't make the one-pointers list, now it might just need 30-40 people to have each placed it last on their ballot for it to make the list proper - and with a mere 42 one-pointers from 89 total ballots that's certainly still perfectly possible :)
Toot - toot! |
Phantom of Liberty was mine.
I don't do any of this strategical stuff. That's just where it landed. For some reason the denying the audience an ending tickled me more-so than all the denied attempts to eat in The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and the the "spew shit in public, only consume (food) in private," feels like such an accurate metaphor for how exchange of ideas for me that will always be cemented into my head as a film that exists. Now excuse me, I need to go wipe my mouth. |

My 1-pointer. Completely neglected skewering of beauty pageants by mostly neglected director Michael Ritchie. |
Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
The movies that I have seen that are other people's one pointers
Paul - If it's the alien movie with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the movie was alright Club Dread - Not a bad movie Meet the Fockers - A decent sequel to Meet the Parents Free Guy - Loved this movie it felt like I was watching GTA online lol Weekend at Bernie's - This movie was alright, I have not rewatched this movie in ages Scary Movie 4 - Better than the 5th movie imo None of these movies are not on my list either |

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
I am surprised my one pointer didn't show. Good taste to whoever else voted for it.
But Monday until the official beginning reveal!?!? I have a feeling this will go into next year. The next countdown might be over before this. |
Let's see, the ones I've seen... also a count of 10.
Meaning to watch Red Rocket at some point this year.
The Phantom of Liberty
The Toy Rejected Pink Flamingos I love You Phillip Morris Ruthless People Weekend at Bernie's Knick Knack Seven Samurai Austin Powers in Goldmember Stroszek |
Seen a bunch of the 1 pointers with my favorites being Ruthless People, Overboard, Stroszek, and Seven Samurai, but I wouldn't consider the latter to be a comedy. I really want to see Short Cuts.

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Maybe it says something about why I didn't submit a ballot, that I've only seen three of the one-pointers (and one of them isn't even comedy, in my opinion). At least none of the other names ring any bells (I know a couple more, but I'm pretty sure I haven't seen them).
Pink Flamingos Seven Samurai Austin Powers in Goldmember |
One Pointers:
The Phantom of Liberty Something's Gotta Give Red Rocket Paul Tickled Club Dread Freaked Night of Something Strange The Fate of the Furious Knick Knack The Toy Mother, Jugs and Speed A Day at the Races American Babylon La guagua aerea Meet the Fockers Megamind Rejected Pink Flamingos I love You Phillip Morris Short Cuts Le Grand Amour The Imposters The Grass is Greener Teen Beach Movie Ruthless People Living in Oblivion Smile Beat the Devil Artists and Models Overboard 1987 Free Guy Boeing, Boeing Weekend at Bernie's The Whole Nine Yards Heavy Trip Scary Movie 4 Seven Samurai Austin Powers in Goldmember Brewster McCloud Dolemite Stroszek Yup, one of those was my 1 pointer...and it wasn't Beat the Devil, A Day at the Races or Artists and Models. Pink Flamingos Seven Samurai Austin Powers in Goldmember Rejected is the Don Hertzfeldt short, I'm pretty sure it's the one with, "my anus is bleeding," though maybe I'm mixing it up with another Hertzfeldt short in the bitter films collection. Strozceck is a Werner Herzog movie that I wouldn't think of as being a comedy, but also a movie that isn't inconceivable someone else might view it through the lens of being a comedy. There is a dancing chicken. |

My pick for my one-pointer is Le Grand Amour which I recommended in the Comedy Hall of Fame yet the person I recommended it to dropped out and missed out on this wonderful french comedy. This is a mix of Tati and Woody Allen where a man fantasizing about leaving his wife for his secretary. |

The Impostors was my one-pointer. It is a strangely overlooked gem: an absolutely loaded cast and an homage to all sorts of classic comedy, but with a modern edge to it that really bites. It's one of the most quotable films I've ever seen, and yet I've never heard a stranger quote it.
Sometimes a great movie just falls through the cracks. This is such a movie. Here's my review of it () from way back in 2007, and here's an excerpt:
Tucci plays a struggling actor named Arthur, and lives with another struggling actor named Maurice (Oliver Platt). Neither of them are all that good; everything they do resembles a caricature, and it's always unintentional. Still, they love their craft, and seem to think of nothing else, except for maybe where their next meal is coming from. Naturally they combine the two, and in the earlygoing try to use their acting to con a local baker out of some pastries in one of the film's most hysterical sequences.
Long story short, they anger a more accomplished actor and find themselves as stowaways on a ship (The titlecard when they learn of this is: "An Ocean Liner?!"). To avoid detection they disguise themselves as baggage handlers. On this ship, we meet the rest of the cast, all of whom get to ham it up in roles well within their considerable talents. They don't just chew on the scenery; they swallow it whole. |
Besides Knick Knack, I've seen these:
Megamind Rejected Pink Flamingos I love You Phillip Morris Ruthless People Overboard 1987 Weekend at Bernie's The Whole Nine Yards Seven Samurai Austin Powers in Goldmember I thought Megamind was kind of mediocre. I'm not sure I really know what to make of Rejected, or of Hertzfeldt's work in general. Pink Flamingos is a turd of movie. I only vaguely remember I Love You Phillip Morris, Ruthless People, and The Whole Nine Yards. Overboard and Weekend at Bernie's were childhood favorites, but were never in consideration for me. I recall Goldmember being decent and, while Seven Samurai is a great movie, I suspect its inclusion here was the result of someone trolling the list. |

It was funny and for once I even liked Jerry Lewis as his performance was way more restrained, sort of like he did in The King of Comedy. Tony Curtis is an actor I like the more I see of him and this was a good role for him too. Of course Thelma Ritter had all the best lines and with her sarcastic quips she stole the proverbial show. I equally enjoyed all three actresses who played the three different stewardess. It was unique for a movie to cast a French, a German and a British actress to play women from those countries. I guess that's why their accents sounded so authentic. Enjoyable movie. @ Captain Steel thanks for the recommendation. |

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
La Guagua Aerea (1993) was my one pointer. I was sure nobody would get that one or probably even heard of it. It's a Puerto Rican film set in the 1960s and follows an assorted group of Puerto Ricans that are traveling to New York for different reasons. The title, which can be translated to "The Air Bus" or "The Air Wagon", is a play on how the trip is treated by them not with the "formality" of a plane trip, but with the casualness of a trip in a public bus. The basis comes from actual massive migrations of Puerto Ricans that occurred during the 1950s and 1960s to the US, particularly New York, because of political and economical reasons while looking for the "American Dream". I'm really not sure how this film would play to someone from another country, since it is so full of our little quirks and idiosyncrasies, most of which would either get lost in translation or go over the head of a foreigner. Things like clapping when the plane lands, or bringing a huge pot of rice to eat in the plane, especially after tasting the awful airplane food, and then sharing it with others, or bring a bag of live crabs for a relative in the States. But in the middle of all that quirkiness and comedy, there's a strong commentary of how our socio-political situation as a territory of the United States makes us feel sometimes trapped, inferior, or ashamed of our culture, but also how we cherish and enjoy the company of others. |
42 one-pointers?????
https://c.tenor.com/c-gJJ6lFKbQAAAAM...ender-whoa.gif Mine was : https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped..._poster%29.jpg A magical, funny romp from Robert Altman which features Bud Cort's only ever "other" lead role before he disappeared for years into obscurity. It's actually a really great movie about a man who is destined to fly like a bird with the help of a mysterious contraption. Actually, it's kind of a crazy movie - but that's why I love it. I've seen : The Phantom of Liberty, Paul, The Toy, Meet the Fockers, Pink Flamingos, Artists and Models, Free Guy, Weekend at Bernie's and Seven Samurai. Okay. I'm sure when I go through this thread properly now there will be an explanation as to why Seven Samurai is here. Also - although one-pointers are meant to be obscure, I was sure I would have seen more considering there were 42 of them. |

I'm pleasantly surprised that my one-pointer didn't make the list. I doubt it will make the countdown, but it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who voted for it, and I'm looking forward to finding out who else loves this movie.
I've seen 18 of the one-pointers. Paul - This was one of the first few movies that I watched for this countdown, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Knick Knack - I love this, and I might have included it on my list if I had included some shorts. A Day at the Races - I strongly considered this movie for my list, but it just didn't make my final list. Megamind - This was a pretty good movie that was much better than I expected it to be, (but to be honest, my expectations weren't very high). The Grass is Greener - This is a great movie, but it was just pushed off my list by better movies. Artists and Models - This is one of the few Martin & Lewis movies that I liked. Free Guy - I watched this for the countdown, and I liked it a lot, but I never really considered it for my list. Boeing, Boeing - This is a fun movie. I'm glad to see it get some recognition here. Weekend at Bernie's - This is a fun movie that I'm surprised didn't get more votes. Seven Samurai - Add me to the list of people who don't consider this movie a comedy, but I guess that's why it's only a 1-pointer. The rest of these movies I saw so long ago that I don't remember much about them: Something's Gotta Give The Toy Mother, Jugs and Speed Meet the Fockers Ruthless People Beat the Devil Overboard 1987 The Whole Nine Yards |

Ostensibly a film about the eponymous kung-fu pimp getting revenge on the people who framed him, it's one very loose film with all manner of tangible incompetence (shaky camerawork and visible boom mics galore) but I'd still count it as a straight comedy precisely because so much of it is about comedian-turned-actor Rudy Ray Moore funneling his stage persona into an action-comedy role where the quips come fast and the film even stops dead multiple times just for him to do routines. Not all of it works, but it remains an unforgettable experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEjKDIkUQgA |

As I've posted in the other thread, my #25 is a popular post-2000 film and expectedly didn't show in the one-pointers. It has good probability to make top 100.
I've seen only four of the one-pointers: • Meet the Fockers (2004), seen it couple of times on television. A bit overdone movie of lower tier than its prequel. --- • Something's Gotta Give (2003) - pleasant romantic-comedy, pretty watchable and entertaining. A typical well polished product featuring big stars. Works great for attracting huge audience. Earned more than $150 millions above its budget, including my ticket too. Saw it back then in the theatre and couple more times later on the television. Nice but I didn't consider it for this game. Quite probably to be on my top 100 comedy though, #88 to say. --- • The last two I've seen - Short Cuts and Seven Samurai - both great but I'm puzzled too about their appearance here. May this be some animated parody of Kurosawa's work? --- |
Every chance I get to sneak a little F&F into the MoFo family… I do it.
So yeah, The Fate of the Furious was of course my one-pointer. Simultaneously the most dead serious and downright hilarious entry in the Fast-franchise. These films are so drenched in cheese and is the closest to 80s action flicks I’ve seen in a long time. Filled with one-liners, insults and stupid machoism. It’s an art form, really. |
Of the 42 one-pointers I've only seen:
Paul
Knick Knack (literally watched just now, thanks for the link) A Day at the Races Megamind Overboard [1987] Weekend at Bernie's Seven Samurai (like many I wouldn't deem it a comedy) Stroszek Ruthless People The Whole Nine Yards Something's Gotta Give Night of Something Strange looks like it may well be my kind of jam though. |

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Well, my one pointer somehow got love from another person (people?). Don't know whether to be disappointed or excited that someone else shared my joy of this one.
Anyway, thoughts on the one-pointers: The Toy---Really disliked this one. Ruthless People---It was my first R-rated movie. Didn't know what the fuss about the tape at the time, but I dug the storyline involving ransom, revenge and 80s fashion. Overboard---I liked this one well enough...good showcase for the chemistry between Hawn and Russell. Weekend at Bernie's---Storyline wasn't much, but there were some funny moments involving the two leads and the dead exec they desperately tried to prove was alive. The Whole Nine Yards---OK comedy proving Bruce Willis could do more than action. Amanda Peet made the most of her character. Scary Movie 4---Considering this franchise was based off a parody of Scream, it felt like they were running out of jokes/stories to tell at this point. Seven Samurai---Huh? This was a comedy, how? Goldmember---Speaking of franchises that should have quit while they were ahead...this one had a slam bang opening and never came close to catching up by the end...although I'd be down for a Foxxy Cleopatra spin-off. |

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
What an interesting list of one-pointers. For me a combination of movies I don’t find funny, a bunch of stuff I never heard of, and Seven Samurai?!
Except maybe The Imposters I might check that one out. Not gonna mention my one-pointer because it has a good chance of making the countdown. |
My one pointer: One pointers seen: 16 Ones I'm shocked are only one pointers: Club Dread The Toy A Day at the Races Pink Flamingos Ruthless People Weekend at Bernie's The Whole Nine Yards Brewster McCloud |

This mostly made my list for one particular moment, which is kind of a spoiler, where the film goes completely undercuts something really quite serious with an unexpected change of direction which I found very funny. That feeling of laughter being shocked out of you is pretty memorable and, I thought, deserving of an honourable mention here on the one-pointers list. |

(I hope it's not necessary.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0-_R1YHmuw

I think I could have done without the serial killer subplot. |

You may enjoy this. Watched it on Netflix recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzAAtZx6xzk |

My prediction sheet on what movies will or might make it, if I'm missing some movies feel free to share them, sorry for the lack of 60's - 30's and pre movies not familiar with those decades. I got 70 movies on there so far and did some research around the mofo site for the movies that I have not seen so I got you all covered mofo-nites lol. If the link don't work or having a hard time getting in it, let me know. |

I'm curious whos one-pointer was Something's Gotta Give?
It is good that someone brought it here. |
Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Happy to see we started! I'm surprised my #25 didn't make the one-pointer list lthough maybe I'm not. It's cool anyway. Also since sending in my list not a day has gone by where I remember or come across some comedy that I forgot to add or consider. That's a bit exaggerated but this morning going through this thread it was the comedies of Pietro Germi especially Divorce, Italian Style. Maybe one of his films will make the list. There's also Toto although those comedies wouldn't have made my list.

Seen 16 of the one pointers with Ruthless People being my favorite comedy of the bunch. A week or two ago I posted the pickup scene with Bozo in the Post a Random Movie Scene thread hoping a few MoFo's may find that scene funny and want to check out the movie. Of the one pointers Short Cuts is by far my favorite movie but a comedy?
My one pointer, as one reviewer recalled, "Hell, the first ten minutes has necrophilia, rape and castration all played for laughs!" but wait... it gets worse. The entire premise is that the Zombie disease is spread like an STD, so the zombies are trying to bang everybody but they are meeting up with some resistance. When Jason, Carrie, Freddy and Christine end up at a motel near the outskirts of Racoon City (not really Racoon City) they grab the attention of the Head Zombie, Cornelius, and well, this isn't the Moonlite Bunny Ranch. There are other things going on with the "plot" revolving around the Motel's owner however, as I'm sure I mentioned elsewhere, plot schmot when it comes to comedies. I get that that probably doesn't sound too good (yet) but as Ray Schillaci of The Movie Guys puts it "Night of Something Strange is like the child that acts bad just for any kind of attention. With its stock characters, including a pair of backwoods hillbillies, a slutty cheerleader, a sexually suppressed jock and an overweight sad sack teen, (Director) Jonathan Straiton has either delivered high camp in the first order or the decline of western civilization with a head-banging score." Ah, never mind. That's not helping either. Okay, okay, okay so the movie is terrible but no chickens were harmed in the filming of it, so it has that going for it. It's a marriage of John Waters (Female Trouble) and George Romero (Dawn of the Dead) with a little Takashi Miike (Visitor Q), Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and Ted V. Mikels (Blood Orgy of the She Devils) thrown in for good measure. It's not a good movie, neither are the Jackass movies, but they all make me laugh and if I took my #25 movie seriously for these countdowns Ruthless People would have received 2 points, throwing the entire countdown into chaos. |

Fwiw, I think six of the films on my ballot ended up on that prediction list.

Re: The Movie Forums Top 100 Comedies Countdown
Honestly, I didn't participate in this since I didn't want to get into any discussions concerning what a comedy really is, since humor is easily the most divisive and diverse art film of all the major fiction genres, and I didn't want to look at the rules later and complain (I know I would've had a few things to say about Seven Samurai;s inclusion), especially since I just got a job and I'd rather keep watching whatever the hell I wanted. Besides, I genre tag the movies on my Letterboxd list of every movie I've ever seen. But I will say this. No matter what, if I had made the list then I have full faith my number 1 will make top fifteen at the most extreme bottom: Holy Grail.
Besides, I'm still waiting for the MoFo top 100 erotic thrillers. |
Glad to see that A Day at the Races (1937) was on someone's list. Although it's a funny film it didn't make my top 25, but I definitely have another Marx Brothers film on my list...
