No, it wasn't The Color Purple. That movie didn't win ANY Oscars at all, and it was nominated for eleven. Same thing happened to The Turning Point. The Fellowship of the Ring was honored for the amaing technical acheivements, which were legion.

I can't believe anyone who knows even a little bit about The oscars was expecting Fellowship to win any of the big eight - it had a good chance at screenplay, but alas....
I could've lived with just ONE major Oscar for LOTR...is that too much to ask for a flick with a whopping 13 nominations? Is this The Color Purple all over again? Not even Best Adapted Screenplay? Disgusting.
it was 80 minutes
I had 43 minutes... pretty dang close!
night, mose
Amen Chris! It's just a popularity contest... they had to give everything to ABM b/c of the controversy surrounding it... they had to show that they don't 'cave' in... BS, but I'm pretty sure that's how they think...

Nobody ever said The Oscars were handed out on merit, because it's so very rarely true.

But that's why we hate/love the stupid things.

A Beautiful Mind. Will it stand the test of time with "best" pictures like Driving Miss Daisy and Around the World in 80 days? You bet your butt.
Damnitt, LOTR got 4 out of 13, and nothing at all truly significant. I swear, I was actually starting to have faith in all this bullsh*t...forget that, though.
Good Night all... have to be up for work in a few hours... It's been nice!
Little Opie Cunningham!
yeah, tell me about locks when amelie doesn't get the win.....
