Totally agree with everything you said. I also think his likeability is so key and how well he plays the hapless dope character, you kinda unwittingly root for him to be funny.
This was the first thing i saw from him, i think anyone other than him and i'd find it mean, it is mean and i feel pretty bad when Conan is making jokes but Norm avoids that somehow:

That a) part is a pretty important part, though. A lot of comedians talk about being insecure and how the pursuit of the laugh is what drives them, and how hard it is to hear silence while telling your jokes, so his willingness to just sit there and get nothing but awkward chuckles for minutes on end until the big reveal is a lot more significant and brave than it sounds.
Sometimes Norm's jokes are bad, but even then they occasionally are so bad that they transcend badness and become good.
The main thing is, if you see what he's doing with his ridiculously long setup, the joke can be ruined because it's so drawn out and you know the punchline (though somehow, even then, it can end up funny). But if you don't, it smacks you in the face.
The jokes themselves are basically stereotypical dad jokes based on popular idioms and stuff, but the art is in a) the patience in slowly building to them and b) the hilarious myth and lore and back stories he creates and talks about for five solid minutes just to hit you with what's really nothing more than a pun. It's almost like "I could tell you a better joke, but I've decided to use my abilities to tell you a terrible one as if it were a good one."
Basically, Norm McDonald is like an expert artist who comes in and makes a bunch of flourishes in front of the canvas and then steps aside and you see a little green tree and a round yellow sun and just blinks at you like "what did you expect?"

Thank you. Billy Connolly drones together but brings it all together once he hits full circle. I love that style. I certainly adore him, that's for sure.
