You know, you have to ask yourself where they came up with that seemingly random date. I'm betting it's some geek's birthday.

That's a UNIX timestamp problem. Lots of programmers, when storing dates, use something called a timestamp, which is the cumulative number of seconds between December 31st, 1969 and the present. For example, as of a minute or so ago, the timestamp was 1131124272. Timestamps are handy because once you have one, you can use any number of functions to convert it to almost any human readable format on the fly.
The result is that when a script expects a timestamp to convert into a readable format, and gets a big fat 0 instead, it reads it as December 31st, 1969.
