The Shoutbox
God this is true. I honestly feel that Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon are great examples of this.
Agreed

There are some good directors out of that particular period, for sure. Wong Kar Wai, Stanley Kwan, Ann Hui, Fruit Chan for example. For the most part, yeah…not so great.

The more I dig further into Hong Kong cinema during the 80’s and 90’s, the more I feel it’s mostly over ratted. Particularly their hybrid action films (usually horror/comedy/action/combination that seems too much of a mishmash of genre to be coherent at times).

I’ve tried to articulate what ‘scary’ even means when it comes to horror, and it’s hard. I think deeply sad, raw stuff hits harder than any gore.
To me, the end of Carrie and scenes in Salem's Lot.
I would agree. Classics, what can I say.

I love Eden Lake! Good to know youngsters still have taste.
They are 30 and 32 yrs old. He took a picture of my recent diary on Letterboxd. I told him to make sure she watches The Loved Ones because I want my DVD back. They have that and Blackoon of mine.
Oh god, I once showed ‘The Loved Ones’ to my father (who’s not averse to horror and violence and so on) and he was truly disturbed and turned off and went on a rant about how cinema has degenerated and the end of the world must be nigh. Fun times. In any case, ‘The Loved Ones’ has got ‘Carrie’ written all over it, and I still prefer the latter, but it’s a fun little thing.
I prefer the original Carrie to the remake and Carrie 2.

The Loved Ones is just fun!
Me too — I also feel Sissy Spacek is criminally underrated.
