The Shoutbox
This is crazy. How does Rocky Balboa have 75% fresh on RT? It's got 101 reviews with 76 being positive.
You know what, John? That is PRECISELY what I said to my husband when he said it was a marketing ploy. And I still half-believe it. But yet, I DO know that yes, that ploy DOES work. Planned shortages *do* work. Supply and demand, after all. Create a sensation and the effects will linger. In the long run they end up selling more.

It happens with whatever Elmo doll they're making every Christmas.

But, honestly, you wrote almost *verbatim* what I said to him when that shortage was first announced.
My best friend was just over and we popped in my only Blu-Ray movie, A Knight's Tale, to see how it looked. Soon as the movie started I was shocked how crisp the movie looked. He made the comment that he didn't notice any difference. Then after a few minutes he was like ah!! I see what you mean!

Gosh, I love HD.
B-to the-U-to the-M-to the-P.

That's right. Bump.
Austruck, contrary to the myths people spread about game consoles, there really are shortages. Why only make 400,000 when you could make 2 million and sell them? That doesn't make sense. Even 2 million is low and would've made the same affect as 400,000. Are we to believe both Microsoft and Sony held back on making consoles to insure the sales of the few they had? I hardly think so.

As for Wii, I don't really find acting the game out fun because you're doing just that, acting. I guess it's just my tastes. And I never said the motion control technology was old. That's new and quite advance. But in a nutshell, the Wii is just a Gamecube with a new controller.

I'm sure there's some truth to both. Reviews have been pretty favorable, though, and I'm looking forward to it.
Merry Christmas, Jason. That's very cool.
John, do you honestly think that "shortage" was real? Honestly, it beautifully created this hunger for those consoles because they were in drastically limited supply. Brilliant marketing strategy, actually. Heck, I've never owned a game console, and **I** wanted to pitch a tent outside Target that night!

As for graphics, well, hey, I'm a big Myst fan on the PC only, so don't ask me about graphics.
I should run a search to see how many "bump" shouts we've had in the 'box since it was introduced.

Anyway, here's another.
I find near life graphics to be pretty immersive.
But more immersive than actually acting out the game? That was the question. It's about fun. I don't find graphics fun, in and of themselves.

As for success, Nintendo is just selling old technology which makes it fairly easy to put more consoles out.
By no measure is it "old technology." The Wii's motion-sensing technology is completely new and heretofore unduplicated in the industry. Frankly, the opposite is true; Nintendo's the only one doing anything new here. Everyone else just keeps ramping up processing power.

If Sony had be able to launch 2 million units, I'm fairly confident that they would've sold
just as well as the Wii.
Obviously, there's no way to know if this is true, but every indication we have says otherwise. For example, s I mentioned before, Sony has apparently not released any official sales figures. If they'd sold as quickly as the Wii (up to the point of sell-out), I can think of no reason they wouldn't say so.

Also, selling "just as well as the Wii" is hardly a victory for Sony. They've been the undisputed market leader for years. For Nintendo to re-gain such a massive amount of market share in one fell swoop with the Wii is a substantial victory for Nintendo.
