The truth is in here
I think Jaws should count even though imdb and Wikipedia doesn't. Everything about it just spells out horror to me, from how it's built up and the way the suspense scenes are staged. It actually makes me kinda angry both sites refuse to acknowledge it as that.

Gremlins is a 1984 American comedy horror film directed by Joe Dante (The Howling; Piranha).

So what is the difference between the tone and style of Gremlins vs. that of Fido?

This is not a clear definition. You can use vague terms like that for compiling your personal list, but it doesn't work for a collaborative process.
I haven't actually seen Fido, just know of it, and I do understand the horror elements of Gremlins. I just don't think of horror first when I think of Gremlins. There's been so many recommend me a horror movie threads and nobody ever mentions Gremlins. Everyone loves it but it just doesn't seem to fit. It's basically a fantasy children's movie to me. Again, that's just how I see it, it doesn't mean I'm right.

This post highlights the question of eligibility.
If it's tagged as horror, it's eligible.
I had to mess around a lot when I did the comics list because of the origins of many of the movies that people wanted to vote for... but horror is horror.

Something that isn't tagged as horror on IMDb or Wiki, but clearly contains horror and is considered a horror by the consensus... Jaws being the prime example... then said movie should be reviewed in terms of the conditions of the MoFo countdown.
Jaws, not tagged as Horror... but, should be included.
Jurassic Park, also not tagged as Horror... and though contains some borderline horror scenes, it shouldn't be included.

Not the other way round. As in, dis-counting something that has been clearly tagged and classed as horror.

What about Bubba Ho-Tep? I know you've seen that. Is that horror? If so, then tell me what about its tone and style makes it "horror" while the tone and style of Gremlins makes it a "fantasy children's movie"?

You're right, Bubba probably isn't horror

Like I said, people can use "tone" and "style" to determine what they're personally going to vote for, but it simply doesn't work when it comes to the question of eligibility.

Weird is relative.
I haven't seen Jaws, but my mom watched it in the cinema when it was first released and she said it scared her enough not to go swimming for a long time. Many other people at that time felt the same way. That sounds like "horror" to me.

I was 4 when I saw it at the movies and it didn't scare me. Of course, I was still all shook up from seeing The Exorcist

It always shocks me at what people think it's appropriate to bring their children to watch... I see it at R-rated films when I go out.

If it's any better, it usually wasn't one of the late night shows. My parents needed time to bring me to the bar afterward

Oh, geez. I get it, though. Finding babysitters can be a hassle, or so people with kids tell me. (Thankfully, I don't have any.)

I watched Jaws first when I was about the same, 3 or 4... apparently I wouldn't go in the bath afterward

Not true. Sometimes my aunt would babysit me, and we'd watch porn.

Eh, it depends on the movie and the child. I would hope the parents know their kids well enough to know what is appropriate for them. I watched a lot of R-rated movies when I was little, though they were generally action movies rather than horror.

It is worth noting that if a film is ineligible, people who like it have no options, whereas if it's eligible, people who don't still have the option of not voting for it. Because of that, and because I think pretty much everyone who participates is honest and isn't trying to dilute or mess with any of these lists (and couldn't do much of that by themselves, anyway), it usually makes sense to allow most marginal films. If there's a significant contingent of MoFos who don't think it qualifies then it's not going to get too far up the list anyway.

I might pissartipate in this.
Here's what I'm going to do - I'm going to compile my list of 25 horrors over the coming months and send it in. If any are deemed non-horror than feel free to discount my entire list and I'll just be a non-participant.

I kind of agree with this. The reality is that if something isn't "really horror," it's probably not going to get enough votes to make it on the list anyway.
You say that, but it's not the case. Just look at the last horror list we did.

That said, I do think that, so long as you genuinely think it counts as horror, then you should put it on your list and it should be accepted. Of course that probably means films 'we' don't think are horror films will make the list, but that's OK. We'll just have a moan when they appear like we did last time.
