Strangers On a Train - 8.5/10

I thought this was excellent right up there with my favourite Hitchcocks. It was certainly one of his simpler films, two guys Bruno and Guy meet on a train Bruno suggests he kills Guys wife and Guy kills Brunos father, Bruno then kills Guys wife then the rest of the film is Bruno harassing Guy into killing his dad, despite its simplicity pretty much everything worked for me. The highlight was easily Robert Walker, i think Bruno is now one of my favourite Hitch characters he was really sinister and intense and also hilarious. The supporting cast was solid too i'd probably say Farley Granger as Guy was the weakest although not bad at all. While visually very simple i still thought Hitch pulled off a few excellent shots like watching the murder through the glasses and that shot of Bruno on the capital building steps. The Merry-go-Round ending was a bit silly and it did all wrap up perfectly but i found it entertaining, i loved the mother crying out for her son then we see him having the time of his life
.
To me this was one of Hitchs funnier films, mostly anything to do with Bruno i loved him mingling at the party and this scene in particular cracked me up:
Bruno: (Talking about his Mothers painting) That's him. That's the old boy allright.
His Mother: Is it? I was trying to paint Saint Francis.
This was my 14th Hitchcock film and i think it is my 4th or 5th favourite after North By Northwest, Notorious, Vertigo and maybe Dial M For Murder.

I agree with MovieGal's rather crude (****) summation of Zulawski's Possession which despite a fine performance from Adjani; is certainly an abrasive watch best enjoyed by movie masochists. I just about made it through whilst nursing a thumping headache, but have absolutely no desire to revisit it's spurious charms.
Not that I'm upset, but I think the 80's gets tarred too easily with the 'cheesy horror' brush because of the glut of generic slashers and cheapo gore flicks that clogged the home video market (the 70's had plenty of drive-in dreck too). It's also the decade that really gave rise to the popularity of tongue-in-cheek-comedy horror which further devalues the reputation. Easy to forget so many decent genre pictures that aren't cheesy were released in the 80's. Kubrick's The Shining, and Peter Medak's The Changeling were a great start, but other stuff like Sidney J. Furie's The Entity, John McNaughton's Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and David Cronenberg's The Fly are also very effective depending on your taste. I wouldn't even say more flamboyant movies like An American Werewolf In London, Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist, Tom Holland's Fright Night, or Robert Harmon's The Hitcher are cheesy more than they are slightly dated. Like every other bygone decade in the history of movies really.
Yes 80's horror is cheese..

The Ugly American - 7/10
I've had this movie for 15 years on VHS and thought I saw it until I watched it tonight. A fine political movie involving not only politics, but friends, and a woman who represents a man's conscience. It reminds me so much of Vietnam - probably they used a fictitious name for a country.

The Ridiculous 6 - 2/10 - Ridiculous is right. The movie was not good at all. The one thing that saved it from a 1/10 was that some of the music score was pretty good and felt western. However, terrible acting, terrible dialogue, terrible jokes, just a terrible movie.

Black Coal Thin Ice (China) a mix of visceral and cerebral crime drama. I kinda ran the gambit of liking, disliking, enjoying, trudging through, caught up in to losing interest and back again while watching this.
Will need a rewatch to get a more solid feel or will meander again for meandering's sake.

Red Lights all kinds of potential, all sorts of "red herrings" to intrigue, a barrage of attempted twists that, when it got down to the final reveal; my enthusiasm had waned. Sadly.

The Revenant (2015)
The entire cast was great. Especially Will Poulter who really surprised me with his performance in this. The bear maul scene was great and the visuals really help immerse you in the story of this movie. Granted the story is dramatize and isn't completely true to the actual events, but then if they did that i'd be a pretty boring movie so I'm glad that they added in stuff to turn it into a good ole revenge story.

Reign Over Me (2007) - Mike Binder

- Adam Sandler is TERRIFIC in that flick wow. It is BY EXTREMELY FAR his best performance and he prove that he can act perfectly in a drama or more serious movie. This movie is very touching and bring tears to my eyes a couple of time during the viewing. The storyline is awesome in my opinion and it prove that friendship is one of the most important thing in your life. The direction is very good and the Don Cheadle and the supporting cast are very good. Definitely a movie that I gonna buy very soon. Love it.

It is sad that he does garbage like Pixels instead of doing more dramas....I really think he has it in him to do some great performances and this movie is the proof.

Holy CRAP this was good! The cinematography was AMAZING! So many complex long shots that change angles multiple times. And Leo gives possibly the best performance of his career! If he doesn't get the Oscar I will call BS on the Academy... again. I got feelings of Tarkovsky and Kurosawa with this movie. Much like Tarkovsky, Inarittu uses the long shot, A LOT! Where as Tarkovsky used the long shot to create hypnotizing a serene sequences of nature and space to set the mood and create an incredible atmosphere for the film, Inarittu uses these longs shots in a lot of instances of people drama. In this film he uses them for raids by Native Americans, fight sequences, bear mauling, and Leo's character Glass trying to survive in the wilderness. And the shots of the great forests and tundras of Canada (and Argentina) and the many ways Leo and others have to struggle to survive the fierce cold reminded me heavily of Kurosawa's Dersu Uzala. This is easily one of the best films I saw this year. That being said the run time was a bit long. At 2 hours and 36 minutes with the credits, the movie was quite a sit. Now that being said, I don't think that the movie was dragged out that much, nor did the film feel too over indulgent in it's shots and run time. And while I could think of a few shots or sequences that could be cut, to their credit they were really really good shots. It also played heavily upon themes of greed, anger, murder, and revenge.
What Inarritu created was a big budget art film. Very artsy in it's presentation, gripping in it's acting, but the premise is very straight forward and has the ability to easily connect with the audience. The revenge story has been done from comics, exploitation movies, big budget action flicks, and documented in history (this was inspired by true events) and The Bible. But Inarritu put his own beautiful stamp on this kind of story with an amazing film.
