I knew that Vincent Gallo is a controversial figure, but wasn't fully sure why, and chose not to research this until after I had viewed the film, so that I could judge the film on it's own merits.

Vincent Gallo's performance didn't come off as sympathetic but still good from an objective standpoint, besides I don't think they were going for a particularly connective characterisation as the film's tone is clearly downbeat.

While the film is mostly about Billy's journey and the choices he has to make, the relationship with Layla offers some thought-provoking questions, if you feel like waxing reflective.
