Rate The Last Movie You Saw
I felt the same way. It's a good concept that didn't fully live up to its potential. It's a shame, because it really could've been great. I remember thinking the characters and dialogue were the biggest culprits in the movie losing its appeal.

Queen of Earth (2015):

Okay film, I really wish it was better, but it wasn't, mostly due to the average acting, and the incredibly weak (at times) writing. I appreciated what it was trying to do, some of the symbolism worked, some of it was laughable and stupid, but at least the film was successful in being different and not a hot mess at the same time. I feel like I'm being a bit generous with my rating, because the acting and the writing extremely bothered me during certain scenes, but don't be mislead though, there are definitely some good and great parts in the movie, plus, everything was nicely shot, so if you're interested enough in watching it, go ahead and do so.

Some people liked it - I gave it my usual . I gave Perry's Listen Up Philip the same but somehow his debut The Color Wheel a , mainly for the elongated finale on the sofa.

Yeah, so far Alex Ross Perry is teetering on the brink of something great, but never quite reaches it for me. I gave it a 3/5, which is essentially a Mark 2/5.

Can't grade this. I just saw this because I know someone in the cast, so I FF'd to those scenes.... I just canceled my Netflix, but not before kinda watching this.

Saw (2004) - James Wan

- Wan is a master and this flick is a masterpiece. Ending is truly one of the best in the 2000's imo. Great horror.
Saw 2 (2005) - Darren Lynn Bousman

- Nice Sequel of a great 1st movie. Marky Mark brother Donnie is pretty good in his role and Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is badass. Once again a great ending.
-
Saw 3 (2006) - Darren Lynn Bousman

- It's good but not as good as the first two... they should've stop after this one. It's a good ending for the trilogy and it doesn't need more movies but once again they didn't understand. Entertaining and well acted by Tobin Bell.

The Young Victoria (2009)
I've seen this twice now and I find it utterly tedious. ITV's Victoria last year covered the same ground but in a much more engaging way.

Strangers on a Train (1951)

Hitchcock cameos, I'm going to have to look for those from now on. Finally, I know exactly what DeVito was talking about in Throw Momma from the Train. Interesting criss-cross murder story. I was glued to the screen. Planning on tackling a handful of Hitchcock's films. I haven't seen many.

Well, looks like I might have a new movie for the top 100.
Just watched my newest purchase, been waiting for a week for it to arrive... and I bought it especially for the Verhoeven Club.
Not seen it a long, long time... man, I'd forgotten.
Showgirls.
Some call it trash... others just call it crap.
Yeah, it's trashy... but there's two words to sum it up for me; stylish trash.
I knew there was a reason I loved Paul Verhoeven so much... he can make a crap film and yet have it watchable and enjoyable.
Damn, I'm glad I'm the Curator of the Verhoeven Club.
Just passes that so-bad-it's-good mark.

I've just watched this and dial M for murder for the first time, ever since that Hitchcock thread motivated me. Very, very good films, very entertaining.

They're definitely worth checking out. I've got my sights set on Rebecca, The Lady Vanishes and The Trouble with Harry.

The Marriage of Maria Braun (1979)
I watched this for the 13th HoF
The only thing I knew about this film before watching, was that it was in German, and I assumed that it featured a lady called Maria Braun and that somewhere she gets married.
The opening scene is indeed the wedding of Maria Braun, who is marrying Hermann (a German soldier) before who goes off to war. They have one afternoon and evening together before he leaves.
When the war ends Maria is waiting for her husband to come home, before hearing from a source that he may be dead.
The film documents the journey of Maria through that time and beyond. I will leave it there, as I don't want to be the revealing spoilers.
Summary
I enjoyed this film for what it was. A story of love, yet a story of so much more. With that said, the title sums it up perfectly. It is indeed a film about Maria's marriage.
The main character and the actress that played her, commanded the screen from the start to the end. By the end of the film, I felt that I really knew Maria.
As I watched the film, it almost felt like reading a book. That was helped by the subtitles but also by the fact that you are watching a persons life, rather than it focusing on a snapshot or a single event within that life. You are viewing her Marriage to her husband and everything that happens within that and because of that.
And at the end it did feel like I had finished a good book.
So glad that it was nominated.
More words on it on my thread and the 13th HoF thread.

Arrival... labelled as best movie of 2016? Best sci-fi of the past 10 years?
Meh... interesting concept but overrated. Like with Inception and The Revenant, a triennial movie.
