Re: Goodfellas, I don't know how much it factors into my general lukewarm reaction to it; I mean, it shouldn't, but I pretty much hate every single character in it. I've always felt that is why I can't ultimately connect with the film beyond thinking "it's fun" or "it was good". I had a similar reaction to The Wolf of Wall Street and, to a lesser extent, to Casino. Most of Scorsese's films leave me the same way
I have this same feeling about Goodfellas and Wolf of Wall Street. There is also a sense of the movie admiring its reprehensible characters in a way that makes it a bit of an uncomfortable viewing experience for me. Goodfellas and The Godfather are both about bad people, both stylised in some way, but there's a difference in the attitude in the way they are presented.
While I'm on the unpopular opinion train, I might as well mention that I don't like Apocalypse Now either.
it's because you picked the WRONG setsuko hara film!
No Setsuko Hara movies on my list.

Look, I'm not judging you - after all, I'm posting here myself, but maybe, just maybe, if you spent less time here and more time watching films, maybe, and I stress, maybe your taste would be of some value. Just a thought, ya know.
Probably, he's been on various shows and interviews over the years, he only started his own Youtube channel in the past year or so.
After seeing part of the review, I can confirm this.
He was the subject of a 2014 documentary called God the Father covering his transformation from being an underboss of the Colombo crime family to finding God.
Looking at his channel, not only does he cover mafia movies, but he also examines various things using his insight as a former member of the mob.
As alluded to earlier, Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of two remaining films to not be first on anyone's ballot. The other appears tomorrow. Raiders, in fact, isn't second on anyone's ballot, either. But it's ranked this high because it has three 3rd place votes, two 4th place votes, one 5th, and three 6th. Nobody had it as their first or second choice, but nine different people put it in their top six.
Perhaps "best" means something different to you than to others, by which I mean not just that tastes differ, but that people also measure these things along different axes.
Perhaps "best" means something different to you than to others, by which I mean not just that tastes differ, but that people also measure these things along different axes.
Well, I don't know if you saw any of them, but there were many, many exchanges in the balloting thread (and some in this one) about the possible distinctions between "best" and "favorite," and how to measure films that are influential versus enjoyable, or impressive/admirable versus, well, fun. I actually incline more towards the former than most on all those questions (as it seems like you do, as well), but it's not a solved question and it doesn't have an objective answer.

I think of Raiders as the greatest of all adventure films. I still remember seeing it at the movies, people were gasping and applauding. Nobody had ever seen anything like that before.
Raiders of the Lost Ark was #2 on the MoFo '80s List.
