The Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame II

Tools

Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Personal Recommendation Hall of Fame. In case you are new or have been living under a f**king rock, below are the rules.

This will be a different kind of specialty Hall of Fame, not one in which a movie will win, but rather a member.

Instead of the normal practice of nominating one movie for everyone to watch, you will nominate a different movie for every member. You will choose what your fellow members will be watching by picking one that they haven't crossed off from any of their MoFo lists. So make sure that you're lists are up to date!

There are some positives unique to this Hall of Fame. The biggest is probably that you'll be watching every nomination for the first time, no more rewatching a movie you recently saw or didn't like before. Also, with being on a MoFo list, you will be watching movies that have some acclaim either here or somewhere else. This could be a nice head start on preparation for the next countdown. And it's always nice to cross a few movies off our lists. If someone can't get their hands on a movie they're supposed to watch, whoever nominated it can simply choose another one. There's no concern over other members having already watched it.

There's 2 parts to start this. First you have to join. You have until Saturday morning the 24th to do just that. Once Sunday morning the 25th comes, we will know who the members are, and then everyone can send their personal recommendation nominations to me. Once I have them from everyone, I will post them and come up with a due date. If you pick a movie for someone that has already been picked for them, you will simply be asked to pick another. You can pick the same movie for multiple members as long as they all haven't crossed it off their lists.

Fresh meat is welcome, but if you're a member who has never completed a Hall of Fame before, you will have to prove yourself first. You will have to watch 5 movies that have been chosen for you before I will post your nominations. This is just to ensure that you don't disappear after the rest of us watch your sorry ass picks.

Voting will be just like any other Hall of Fame. I'm going to put the runtime limit at 3 hours. For this Hall of Fame, I will waive that limit for people nominating for me. Everyone else has that option as well. Previous winners can be nominated in this Hall of Fame.

Hopefully everyone finishes, but if you watch a movie chosen by someone who drops out, it'll at least probably be a movie that was worth watching.

Seconded.
Also, Ed, Siddon, Miss Vicky, Neiba, Pahak, Cosmic....who else?

Well there's also:
Frightened Inmate No. 2

and maybe some new people will join, or old people who haven't joined before

I'll join one of these when someone figures a manageable way to do this without being forced to make picks from MoFo lists. I understand that it keeps things simple, but for me, it's just too limiting and boring.

That’s what the HOF is there for, as it fulfills the criteria you prefer, but I totally understand your reasons.

Okay, I'll join.

However, please, please, PLEASE take my advice about what to avoid when choosing nominations for me. I know that I'm picky AF and am very hard to please and that your selections are limited, but please make an effort to choose something I might actually enjoy.

Things to keep in mind:

-I DO NOT waive the run time limit. I cannot stress this enough. Please check the runtimes of possible nominations before settling on one for me.

-Please be hyper aware of the content of the films you are choosing. Anything containing actual animal cruelty (this includes cruelty to invertebrates and fish) or the sexualizing/nudity of actual child actors will get an automatic last place on my ballot. Films featuring simulated animal cruelty or the sexualizing of adults who are playing minors are acceptable. A few examples of films to avoid are Cannibal Holocaust, The Wild Bunch, Andrei Rublev, Apocalypse Now, and Oldboy, as they all contain actual animal cruelty.

-As many of you already know, there are a number of directors that I generally dislike. While choosing a film from one of them isn't an automatic dealbreaker, please be aware that the chances of your nomination ranking highly on my ballot will be pretty damn low if you disregard this bit of advice. Such directors include Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Lynch, and Darren Arronofsky. There may be more that I'm not thinking of as well.

-There are also certain genres that I don't generally like. Musicals are typically a big no-no. Documentaries generally bore me as do most arthouse films. Comedies - movies that really try to be funny - often fall flat with me. And I'm not big on heavy Horror (though I do enjoy several horror comedies), Science Fiction, or Fantasy, though aside from musicals, none of these are necessarily dealbreakers. War movies are best avoided, unless it's centered around the American Civil War or an ancient battle. Westerns are also very hit or miss and keep in mind that many of them, especially the older ones, employed some pretty barbaric methods to get horses and other animals to do what the director wanted.

-I generally am not a fan of movies that feature female protagonists or that have predominantly female casts, though this is also not a dealbreaker.

-Things I like in movies: Violence. Sex - but keep in mind that I'm a woman and that my idea of what is sexy might not align with yours especially if you are a heterosexual male. If the women are hot and the men are ugly, I'm not going to be impressed. I want some male eye candy. I also tend to gravitate towards sad films. If it succeeds in making me cry, I will probably love it.

The thing isolated becomes incomprehensible
I'll decide closer to the deadline. I'm inclined to do this but I still have to watch a few more films from the General HoF till I see if I can handle this.

And I already chose the film for Miss Vicky so, that's half of the work xD

It's cool but I don't get it, especially with you since there's a couple of thousand films to choose from. If you join a specialty HoF, it's much more limited with the amount of films that people are even aware of, and I think the most boring thing is watching something you just watched or something you already didn't like. Maybe you're thinking it would be great if we could just pick any movie you haven't seen? At least this selection has had some type of consensus as opposed to one member's opinion, and we all have our own personal watchlists already for movies that are out in left field. There were a whole lot of new personal favorites discovered the last time around, and plus the selection process is way more fun.

I for one love the structure of the Personal Rec. I can easily look through a member's list and find something I know they haven't seen. Sometimes I even find a film they might like Some folks are harder to choose for, than others. Me, I'd think I'd be easy to please with a movie rec.

Also, Ed, Siddon, Miss Vicky, Neiba, Pahak, Cosmic....who else?
I do love the idea of this HoF, but I don't think I'm a good match for it. I'm terrible at picking out films for other people, and have a hard enough time deciding on just a single nomination, so I can't imagine how difficult finding a film for each person would be.

I'll take another stab at updating my lists just in case I decide to join anyway. But given how few musicals and documentaries I'll have ticked off once I finish going through them, I'm also afraid that everyone will nominate one of those for me, and this will be an incredibly long and painful HoF that'll be very tempting to just outright quit.

Same.
I am also pretty easy to pick for, as I don’t allow myself to be pigeonholed nor restrictive and can be fairly critical of any film regardless of genre, actor, and or director. I’ll give any a chance.*

*except for porn.

Boooooooo! 🤨

sure i'm in. every movie i've ever seen can be found at either of the links in my signature so, if it's allowed, i'd be happy to accept some nominations not on the mofo lists if there's something more obscure you think i'd like.

edit: i also waive the time limit

It's a thought, but I'd rather just keep it the same.

Glad you're in and I already have one picked for you.

Y'know I'm torn on one hand...I love making recommendations...

On the other hand I liked like two picks you guys made for me.
I think you're like the only one who didn't find a new favorite in the last one.

Nah, I don't want people to recommend me films I will not want to watch.
