Most nonsensical rating

Twister: Rated PG-13 for intense depiction of very bad weather.

I look at this and I laugh all the time.

Pretty Woman being rated R still confuses me.

Once Rated R, they only cussed like 3 times, (that I remember)

Actually the "f-word" is used 30+ times in Once. But the MPAA's stance on the "f-word" is ridiculous anyway. A film can use it once or twice and still receive a PG-13. But any more than that and it's probably gonna get slapped with a soft R. That's really stupid. If hearing it one time won't permanently damage the fragile little mind of a thirteen year old, what's fifty more gonna do?

Shrek the Third rated PG for swashbuckling action!

G
Suitable for the entire family.

PG
Parental Guidance Suggested, but not required

PG-13
Probably best suited for those thirteen and up, but I don't know if you're an eleven-year-old at the mall that they would stop you from buying a ticket. Plus in America most kids don't get an official I.D. until fifteen or sixteen, so how would a ticketseller even know if you were twelve or fourteen?

R
You have to be seventeen, unless accompanied by an adult. But the unspoken rule is that no theater owner is going to be turning away a fifteen-year-old from seeing The Matrix: he's gonna take that money much more often than not. Also it's common for those teens under the age of seventeen to buy a ticket for a PG or PG-13, then go into the R-rated theater at the multiplex.

NC-17
No children under seventeen, even if your Dad wants to bring you to see Showgirls with him (which is pretty creepy, after all).

That's interesting, are there no "ratings" at all where you are?

PG for Gremlins??

In Australia it goes:

E - Exempt from classification, pretty much nature doco's

G General

PG Parental Guidance Recommended

M15+ Which is recommended for people aged 15 years and up. Which is pretty much everything these days, doesnt matter if your 8 though you can still go see them or buy. M is almost the new G.

MA15+ Now its no I.D. no movie.

R18+ Reserved for disturbing, weird stuff or softcore porn. Se7en got this rating, I though it was no more than an MA15+ IMO.

X18+ Restricted, Illegal to even play with people under 18 around. I think its only really imported porn thats like that.

That's pretty interesting Naisy. Over here in the states when we get a DVD in particular that comes from just about anywhere non-Hollywood it typically comes with a NR for either No-Rating or Not Rated, and why they find it necessary to do that exactly I really don't know. Holden probably knows. Is it also like that there? Or do all of the films you get over there go under that rating system you just mentioned?

E (for Exempt) would be the same thing as NR. It's a legal thing here, I imagine it would be the same thing there.

Every movie & DVD gets reviewed by Classifications Board in the Australian Film and Literature office (a government body) to make sure it meets the standards of the code and "provides protection for what you and your family watch by clearly marking on the case the type of movie you are getting"

Yeah I'm sure you're right about the legal thing, it is pretty interesting though at times because you can never be to sure what is in the film (not that I care, but some do to be sure) unless you know the movie ahead of time. Because they put that NR on it no matter what it is.

Makes sense, I expect there's some money changing hands at some point to. Goh'mint's gotta eat!

Not that I know of. Plus, when I was a wee lass, I could buy all the liquor and cigarettes I wanted. Yay for living in the shattered remnants of communism...

Really? What a trip. Do you want some? We got a whole bucket full of them here.

A local Rave theater here will not allow a person under the age of 17 to watch a film on a school night after 8:00 pm no matter what your age or who you are with or the rating of the film..

The MPAA are pussycats compared to the BBFC one of the strictest classification boards in the world. Plus in the States you can buy many cool films unrated on dvd.
