The Movie Forums Tribune Gazette Post Times
Saturday, April 28th, 2007...A.D.
Intro
Welcome to the first edition of the Movie Forums forum wrapup gazette thing. Yes, that's right, just 6 years and 10 months into the site's existence, we've produced our first regular forum summary. Seriously, we meant to do it earlier, but we've been busy. And we had a headache. For six years. Yes, we're getting that looked at.
Below you'll find a bit of site news, as well as links to some of the more intriguing discussions going on at Movie Forums (or "MoFo", as we like to juvenilely call it) as of late. We realize that not everyone can be quite as addicted to talking about cinema as we are, so we thought some of you saner folk might benefit from a simple wrapup of what's happening. Enjoy.

What's New
First thing's first: we've added a new "Favorite Movies" option. Enter your favorite movies and they'll show up on your profile, as long as every post you make. Every movie entered by you (or any other user) is clickable, too, and searches for other users who listed that movie among their favorites. Cool, eh? Enter your favorites here:We've also added, on account of fervert demand, a Reputation Tracker, which allows users to see which posts of theirs are getting props (or the opposite, the dreaded "anti-props"). Read all about it here:On to the forum stuff...
On the Boards
Per usual, there are many dozens of posts that are worth reproducing here, but we went with rufnek's reply on page 6 of the "Favorite war movies" thread.

- Which is scarier: reason, or obsession?
A thread about which horror film staple is scarier: ghosts, or aliens? The discussion ranges from abstract (my assertion that ghosts are scarier because they cannot be reasoned with) to the specific (longtime user OG- questioning whether or not there's any cinematic precedent for aliens being reasoned with).
- 5 Movies for an American History Class
This thread was started by uconjack last September, and asks users "If you were going to show 5 movies in an American history class what would you show?" It was revived recently, though, when new user "rufnek" questioned MoFo mainstay Holden Pike's choice of the classic "12 Angry Men," on the grounds that it's historically inaccurate. Jump to page 2 to get right to the new stuff.
- Are movies depicting prejudice overrated?
Started by yours truly. A discussion about whether or not films like "Do the Right Thing", "American History X", and "Crash" receive levels of praise disporportionate with their actual quality given the emotional impact of their subject matter. This discussion also touches on the issue of whether or not moviegoers are tend to inflate the importance of the first cinematic treatise on prejudice they see.
- Actors you would pay to see in anything
Simple premise: which actors do you enjoy watching so much that you'd pay for a movie ticket based on their involvement alone? Choices so far have tilted towards supporting/character actors (John Turturro, Steve Buscemi, and Alfred Molina, to name three), with a few stars (Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep) mixed in.
- I need some advice
New (and appropriately named) user AlicetheAuthor tells the community that she's been "approached by an independent film maker to have my third book turned into a movie," and asks for advice on standard levels of compensation.
Per usual, there are many dozens of posts that are worth reproducing here, but we went with rufnek's reply on page 6 of the "Favorite war movies" thread.
I agree--"The Thin Red Line" isn't a very good film, especially since we have a good example of what it could have been. It was based on the second of author James Jones trilogy of books about soldiers during World War II. His original plan was to follow the same 3-4 soldiers from before the war, during the war, and then as wounded veterans after the war. But he kept killing some of them off in his books. Yet although the names change, the three main characters in each of books are basically the same personae.

- Iron Man
Sleezy posts the "Golden Age" suit from the upcoming "Iron Man" film, starring Robert Downey Jr. Personally, I think it looks like something a drunken Jules Verne would come up with, but, diff'rent strokes...
- My belated Grindhouse review that'll probably annoy you
You know how they say that some people have too much time on their hands? MovieMaker5087 is one of those people. Check out his 1,200+ word opus on "Grindhouse" in which he praises one half of the double-feature and skewers the other.
- 300 PG Version
Longtime newsmaven jrs links us up to an allegedly PG-rated version of the "300" trailer. Hystrically appropriate for all ages. If you've ever wanted to see someone stabbed with a candy cane (and who hasn't?), here's your chance.
