The 2024 MoFo Film Awards

Ah man, it's just depressing how many average films are in this list when so many great films of the last year have been seen by about 15 people.

Edit: Apologies if this has come off as a rather petulant post ^, I don't want to upset anyone, I know alot of hard work goes into this every year, just so others can enjoy it - It's just a comment on personal preference not how anyone voted or anything, I guess some years are more better than others film wise for everybody.

I think it's fair to say that this year is a bit lacking in high tier movies.

But that isn't saying that the top movies are bad... just that they have less competition then they would've had in other years. When an action movie like Furiosa has a nomination for "best actress", you know the field was a bit sparse.

Barring any startling upsets, I don't think it's going to impact the final results. Every category still has 2-3 prize-worthy nominations.

Run a yearly Hall of Fame to allow films to be championed rather than just post lists. Only solution I could see...

I'm happy for The Promised Land getting nominations and I'm sad Ghostlight didn't get anything.

  • Anora
  • The Brutalist
  • Conclave
  • The Count of Monte Cristo
  • Dune: Part Two
  • Flow
  • I Saw the TV Glow
  • The Promised Land
  • The Substance
  • Wicked
Only three of these are "major" releases so that should be considered a victory.

Sing Sing received some votes from me, but Nickel Boys was hurt by the POV thing, I found it a major distraction, and something that pushed me out of the film, when it should have been drawing me in. (and I like experimentation in art, but....)

My favorite actors, Cillian Murphy in Small Things Like These, Colman Domingo (lead) and Clarence Maclin (supp) in Sing Sing, Joan Chen (supp) in Didi, didn't make it here - but, what can you do?

I'm surprised Sing Sing and Nickel Boys haven't received more attention. I thought they were accessible, moving, brilliantly directed films.

I'm afraid I've never heard of either.

Sing Sing is an A24 film set in a prison
Nickel Boys is Orion produced, distributed by Amazon and nominated for 2 oscars. About young black boys sent to juvenile detention.

Both high quality films.

I forgot the opening line.
Since the noms were released I've watched Cuckoo, Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, Black Box Diaries, I Saw the TV Glow, Daughters, The Promised Land, The Girl With the Needle, A Real Pain and Flow. Maybe I should add Nickel Boys and Sing Sing to my list - for an added challenge!

A great bunch of films though, I've had a really great time ploughing through them.

I never could get the hang of Thursdays.

Just got round to Sing Sing yesterday and I thought it was good. Probably would have nominated it for some categories if I had seen it earlier. I couldn't get into Nickel Boys as much, I found the pov camera too distancing.

I forgot the opening line.
Watched Saturday Night, The Count of Monte Cristo, Wicked, Unfrosted, Thelma, Nosferatu, Emilia Pérez, Inside Out 2, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Challengers, Kneecap, Abigail and Grand Theft Hamlet.

This has certainly been a challenging marathon, but I was really helped this year by the fact that there are so many movies that scored more than one nomination category (10 of the movies I mentioned above got more than one nomination) - I'm ticking off multiples nearly every time I watch one.

There are only 2 weeks left until the deadline!
If you didn't nominate any films in the first stage, that's okay - you can still vote for a winner!

Tagging everyone who did nominate, but who haven't voted yet, just to make sure you're all aware! @Allaby @ApexPredator @Harry Lime @John-Connor @LAMb EELYAK @mrblond

Yeah, there's quite a bit of overlap this year, which some might find boring, but it at least means that those films were seen and liked enough to make multiple categories.

Unfortunately I completely lost track of time and have not watched anything new for this yet. Hopefully that changes in the next two weeks!

I totally forgot that I hadn't voted yet. Sent my ballot now.

I forgot the opening line.
Watched A Complete Unknown, The Wild Robot, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, Madame Web and Sugarcane - which means I'm done! My votes (after careful consideration, and agonizing over the Supporting Actor/Actress, Documentary and Screenplay categories) are in. In my haste to get there, I ended up finishing way before the deadline! Planning on watching Nickel Boys tonight just to keep up my own personal '2024' film festival.

The 2024 MoFo Film Awards sounded like an exciting celebration of creativity and talent! I’d love to hear more about the standout winners or any surprise moments during the ceremony. Also, a highlight reel or behind-the-scenes look would be awesome for those who missed it. After catching up on the awards, I took a break by playing the Basket Random game it’s the perfect mix of chaos and fun!
