On the Waterfront -


Well this didnt disappoint. An absolute classic with a phenomenal ending. And Brando gives a pretty inspirational performance.

The Butler
(Lee Daniels, 2013)


The movie tries so hard to pass itself off as a meaningful, emotional, important film, using the character of the Butler as a filter for the last 50 years of American history, but ultimately it's just a failed attempt at Oscar-bait, slightly elevated by a strong, buoyant performance by Forest Whitaker. The cast is star-loaded, but distractingly so. Instead of paying attention to the story, you're waiting for the next recognizable face to pop onto the screen. ("Hey, look, there's Jane Fonda! There's John Cusack! Wait a second, is that Mariah Carey?") Alan Rickman is the highlight as President Reagan. Robin Williams, on the other hand, is laughably bad as President Eisenhower.



Deadfall
(Stefan Ruzowitzky, 2012)


I'm not sure if this movie was direct-to-video or not, but it feels like it. Terrible script, cringe-worthy dialogue, cardboard characters, predictable plot, an over reliance on cliches. Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde make it even worse by giving two of the worst attempts at a southern accent I've heard in a long, long time. A complete and utter waste of time.



The Running Man
(Paul Michael Glaser, 1987)


A more faithful adaptation of Stephen King's novel would've played like a futuristic, high-tech version of The Fugitive. Instead we get a cheesy 80's action flick starring a miscast Schwarzenegger in a movie dumb enough to kill brain cells. That's unfortunate, since the game-show setting was ripe for satire. A better, more ambitious director could've explored the dangerous and manipulative ways of the media. Paul Verhoeven, for example, deftly mixed satire and mature themes into his great action flick, Robocop. The Running Man, however, settles for Schwarzenegger delivering one-liners in a ridiculous, yellow jumpsuit while disposing of villains like Professor Subzero, who wields a deadly hockey stick and exploding pucks, and Dynamo, an opera singer who shoots electricity and drives a buggy.

Good Will Hunting
My first movie again in a loooong time.
What an amazing movie, great quotables and it made me think a lot. Also, can't go wrong with Ben Affleck & Matt Damon. Definitely gonna watch this again. I'd say 8,5/10

Carrie (1976) & Carrie (2013): (7/10)
I just watched both Carries, and this may sound stupid, but I just felt like I watched the same movie twice. I know it's a remake but it's about 80% the same down to the lines. I can see then why people may suggest that the 1976 version is better, it was the first and it was actually something new. All in all though I think they are about the same, the 2013 has a couple scenes done better, and the prom part is bigger, which is awesome, and of course one of my favorite young actors as Carrie, but the special effects kinda ruined it. On the other hand the 1976 has a much more unique and iconic style, it's of course, the first, and it does also have scenes done better than it's remake. All in all, it's about the same, the 2013 version is more updated and easier to get into, but both are worth a check.
I still prefer the book though.

(REWATCH) Lawless
I have seen this at the theater and felt so-so, having VERY high hopes since seeing the director's Proposition with guy pearce, which i thoroughly love; but after a few more watches over the past year or two i have come to love this movie

Confidence
with such a solid cast such as giamatti, weisz and dustin hoffman and the set up of a good con, this grifter movie was FAR TOO EASY to unwrap every "surprise"

Remember that awful song from the early 2000's Stacy's Mom? Turns out they made a movie inspired by that flippin' song! Unlike the song, it did not make me want to stab out my ears. Not breaking any new ground here movie wise, but I got a few laughs out of it. Also turns out Stacy's Mom was a porn star.

Oh yeah, spoilers.

Bad Words



Had my eye on this one for a little bit. If I had the chance to see it I was going too. It is Jason Bateman's directorial debut. And I found it to be really entertaining. Bateman really nails it as a foul mouth smart ass who just wants to complete his mission at all cost. He enters a middle school national spelling bee contest at the age of 40 because of a loophole. Not to spoil anything but he has motivation as to why he is doing it. Some of the stuff he says and does to these kids are out of control but really funny. He befriends one of them and their relationship is comedy gold really.

Could it have used a little more heart? I suppose. But you should go into this movie knowing it's not for everyone. Bateman is absolutely funny as hell and confident as ever in this role. It's just a fun movie you should go into not taking it too seriously. Some might be turned off by the comedy. But i found it really entertaining. It has a good enough story to keep your interest too. I'll probably revisit it and watch it with someone else when it comes out on blu ray too see if it was as funny as I thought.

I'd give it a strong 3 out of 5.

Recorded The Rock on the DVR last night. Haven't watched it for years...


This time round I've been able to spot that the film is filled with almost every single racial stereotype and general stereotype going.


Black guy and black woman held hostage in Alcatraz's cells and the black Tram Driver, all acting stereotypically black.
Stanley's girlfriend, Carla, being "Catholic, pregnant and unmarried".
Gay Hairdresser who cries at the action, only cares about if he did a good job with Mason's hair and calls himself a "stylist" rather than a Barber.
Mysterious British guy (Mason).
Ranger Bob at Alcatraz being fat and jolly.
A-typical hot girls (Mason's daughter and her friend, both white). Also Carla, who was the Prom Queen. Also white.
The hostage who is weak and cries, who turns out to be a family man.
Bad guy who has an "Irish Father" who hates Mason because he's an "English prick" who is actually Scottish.


I'm sure there's more. Good film though, definitely Bay's best.
