The Libertine
9/10

Great performances, excellent script, good original score, and some real history - it's a good combination!
Great movie. I think that was Depp's best role.

Welcome to the human race...
Fate did feel like a step down because the setpieces weren't quite that over-the-top (and seeing them get spoiled in the trailers certainly didn't help), whereas the non-action parts really were a mixed bag. Theron barely left an impression even when she had the chance to be one of the more interesting villains in the series (though she arguably counts as one by default), plus I'm still not sure that the film's use of Statham is something that can be truly appreciated either (#JusticeForHan).

Besides...

WARNING: "F&F series" spoilers below
...if Owen can survive what happened to him in 6 and Deckard is actually a sort-of-good guy then maybe there's hope for Han and Gisele being alive after all.

Your Name -

Yes, it's anime. Watched it last night and I was totally amazed. Everything about this movie was just absolutely beautiful. The story spotlights two Japanese characters caught in phenomenon that has them switching bodies every so often when they fall asleep. They try to cope with this by leaving messages to each for when they return to their original bodies in order to adapt to the other person's lifestyle. Yeah, it's a bit confusing, but just wait until you watch it...what I just mentioned is nothing. The movie is filled with twists and turns that'll have you waiting at the edge of your seat to see what comes next.

The script was solidly written and they made sure not to leave anything without explanation. The pictures and animation were so dreamy almost capturing you in the fantasy they portray. The movie allowed their characters to develop along the plot, which brought us closer and connected us with the characters. I believe this is an important aspect when creating movies, because as we grow close to characters, we start to feel the various emotions that run through their mind, totally captivating us into the movie. On top of that, everything is just so cute, or "Kawaii" as how they'd say it in the anime world.

Your Name was one of the best films I have seen this year, and that's a pretty tough feat to accomplish given that there were movies such as Get Out, Logan, Split, John Wick 2, and so on. If you don't love anime, you might after watching this movie. I'd suggest this movie to anybody who appreciates a well-written piece of art. Don't you think so?

Hellloooo Cindy - Scary Movie (2000)
Speaking of Hostel...

Hostel -
+
(Eli Roth, 2005)

My best friend is a fellow horror fan and a fellow crazy person. But he has it a little worse than me, and due to bad experiences with extreme horror is very cautious about movies like this. We had to turn Cannibal Holocaust off fairly early in the movie, because he couldn't handle it (which I totally understand - it's not for everyone). Anyway, he says I've helped him overcome a lot of his fear with certain horror movies, but personally I think I can be a little pushy some times. Alas, for my coming b-day he said he wanted to watch the first two Hostel flicks with me, since I'm a fan. So we and a few others sat and watched the first last night. I think it was kind of intense for him while watching, but he made it through and I think that's awesome.

Personally, some things I was particularly impressed by this time around: the score and how well-crafted the torture scenes are. I still prefer the second one - a lot of that has to do with my preference for the girls in the second one to the guys in the first one who act like twats. I feel like if I liked the characters in the first a little more, I would give the film overall a better rating. Because I really do think it's a great horror film that shows Roth's talent as a filmmaker.
Preference for the girls hey

I like how the boys are a little obnoxious at times, makes it more realistic imo. Although I regard the second one highly. He definately is a talented filmmaker just not a crowd pleasing politically correct one. Have you seen the Green Inferno, panned by critics. I quite liked it.

I'm going to rewatch "Fast and Furious" movies and put my spin on each of them.
the Roman scene was a little far out in the way that holding on to that thing would be pretty implausable. But it wasn't too bad. I went with it.
It was one of the best moments.

Paprika

Amazing. Simply amazing. Satoshi Kon continues to deliver. Not only has he made another outstanding film, but he is now officially one of my top 10 favorite directors.

Perfect Blue was a gritty and sleazy thriller based on obsession and identity with plenty of twists. Millennium Actress was an almost free form and mind bending love story filled with incredible visual flare. Both were full of surreal imagery, both constantly blur the line between what is reality and what is not real, and both have more then a few influences by cinema. Paprika seemed to merge a lot of these two films into one. While it is not as sleazy as Perfect Blue or quite as random as Millennium Actress, it does find an excellent medium between these two films. The film felt at time more like Millennium Actress with it's visual wonder and lighter tone. But when it got dark, it could get right into Perfect Blue territory. Not full blown mind you, but it could still get plenty dark. And like with Perfect Blue I was glued to the TV when it got thrilling. Further more the movie shows an incredible love for movies. Not just for what they are or the many visual references; but I feel for what they represent as well. There is a line towards the end of Paprika concerning the relationship between truth and fiction that really hit home for me. I won't discuss it since it will go into spoiler territory.

People can have their Inception, this is my favorite movie about people going into dreams.

Legend in my own mind

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring

The film starts with a Buddhist monk and his young apprentice. It shows the relationship between the two.
Everything seems to be going well and then...Cupid strikes.
The film goes on to document the lives of the Monk and the apprentice through the various seasons over the years.

"If there is a gun on the mantel in the first act, it must go off in the third." - Anton Chekhov

Excellent thriller/drama story (based on Ruth Rendell's novel) told in a classic way by the 'French Hitchcock'. Kinda half-saw the ending coming, so it didn't come exactly as a shocker. Great performances by both Isabelle Huppert and Sandrine Bonnaire.

Sophie Scholl: The Final Days -

Solid dramatisation that is more appreciable on an ideological level than a cinematic one, though that is undoubtedly the idea.

The Room (Rutger Hauer & Erik Lieshout, 2001)

Very nice little short that is beautifully shot and scored plus benefits from the hypnotic tone of Mr. Hauer's voice.

Requiem 2019 (Rutger Hauer & Sil Van Der Woerd, 2011)

Wordlessly surreal short set to a haunting piece by Lolly Jane Blue.

@Ultraviolence what didnt you like about autopsy of Jane Doe? I nodded off for the reveal then woke up for the end, and I;m glad I did nod off, but otherwise I just really liked the acting and the dynamic between father and son.

It was not... ultraviolent enough.

I really enjoyed it too. Not an amazing film, but surprisingly good little horror thriller. It's so rare to see a horror film with good characters and interactions and dialogue like this had.

LOL. I almost called him Uberviolence.

I was pleasantly surprised by that one. I thought it ws quite refreshing, especially without an overabundance of cheap jump scares. The first one got me enough for a giggle and then I didnt notice any more. I will have to rewatch this some time. My only other issue was the tree lopper the dad used which mde me laugh outright, but it looked good so I gave it a pass.
