Boo turned 19 a couple weeks ago. Here she's sharing a whipped cream treat with the pups.

Our other two cats don't come upstairs anymore. They stay in the basement away from the dogs. Whenever they go on the stairs, Rudy barks them back down. Is there anything I can do to get them up here? I know I could block the basement off and force them up, but they were rescue cats and are still a little timid. It's been several months now.

Sweet.

I would make a little den for them down there, cricket. Let them come and push you out of bed in their own time. Speaking of which, noisy storms here at the moment and my brave boy JRT was a bit of a trembling mess so I let him sleep in our bed. He pushed me out at 1.30am. Turd!

We finished the basement last year so it's pretty cozy down there. They've got a sofa, plenty of beds, toys, and all the essentials. I just don't like how they're isolated. Boo just walked right over Rudy to get on my lap. I want the others to feel comfy enough to do the same.

I bought the exact same containers for our cats!
They love those thing.. I end up hiding the full container in the closet after finding it laying on the floor, top ripped off and empty a few times and filling a smaller container I can stash in my nightstand drawer...... It doesn't matter, the second it comes out there's a line..

They'll get there eventually. I was watching a friend post photos yesterday of her rescue maremma and a bed she bought him. First photo was him asleep on it. Next was the cat sitting next to him and looking at the camera with that 'I'm going to kill them all' look. I said I know what's coming next. Yep...cat was in the middle of the bed and maremma was on the floor.

OK, this took awhile, but here's my menagerie:

The late Snuggles, prior to whom I wasn't a dog person:

Tinkerbell, terror of the vet clinic:

Tiki, terrifying beast in her own mind:

Filaria ("Ria"), who was such a cute little worm when we first adopted her (at about six months old), I named her after parasitic larvae. At that time, she could hide for hours in my shirt pocket:

By way of perspective, at nearly ten years old, Ria is now about four feet long (1.2 meters), and you can get some idea of how thick she is relative to my arm (I'm a fairly big guy, for what it's worth). I don't know how much she weighs, but doesn't she have the cutest little face!

(Sorry for the blurry shots. She told Mr. deMille she was ready for her closeup, but then she kept blinking.)

Thank you for this, Dani! Just today we euthanized an elderly cancer patient we've been seeing for years, so your timing was perfect.

There's a Nova episode, "Dogs Decoded", which bears out a lot of the research the article mentions. Available on Netflix.

Rudyard Kipling wrote some surprisingly touching poems on the human-dog bond, which may be apropos: "The Power of the Dog", "His Apologies", etc.

Yes, Ria is a royal python/ball python.
