Martin Scorsese, super genius

Tools

Well, I've watched Taxi Driver plenty of times in the past, trying to like it, but always found it boring. Earlier this week, I gave it another try, and it finally worked for me. I thought it was great. So, I guess I like all the Scorsese films I've seen except Goodfellas, but I guess I should give that another watch because maybe that will finally click as well.

Sorry if I'm rude but I'm right
Martin Scorsese and super genius in one sentence? There's something wrong with the title. Oh, I get it! It's enumeration. There's Scorsese and a mysterious "super genius", because there's no way Scorsese is a genius. <they seen me hatin', they hatin'>

Scorsese, DeNiro, and DiCaprio together for the first time?!? Yes!

However...it is only a series of commercials for a new luxury casino in the Philippines.

Tell me about it.

It does appear that Scorsese's next project will be Silence, which he has wanted to make for decades. Based on the acclaimed 1966 novel by Shūsaku Endō, the script was completed sometime in the 1990s, and Scorsese intended it as his follow up to Gangs of New York. However when the financing fell through, he moved on to The Aviator. Everything seems to be back in place for Silence, this time.

The story is based on historical fact, though the names and nationalities were changed in the novel. It follows Jesuit Priests in 17th Century Japan, a period when Western influences in general and Christianity specifically were outlawed by the government. When it was being prepared in the early 2000s, it was going to star Daniel Day-Lewis with Gael García Bernal and Benicio Del Toro. As it moves forward through pre-production in this current decade, Liam Neeson is attached to star, with Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver in support. Interestingly, Neeson also starred as a Jesuit Priest in Roland Joffe's 17th Century South American set The Mission (1986), with Jeremy Irons and Robert DeNiro.

And though not next on the slate but apparently still in the pipeline is The Irishman, based on the non fiction book about the man who claimed, on his deathbed, to have killed Jimmy Hoffa, as well as many other mob-related murders for hire. Al Pacino is supposed to star, pairing with Marty for the first time, with the return of both Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci to a Scorsese film. The wonderful Bobby Cannavale is also attached, with rumors of yet another former collaborator Harvey Kietel possibly joining the mix, as well.

Time will tell.

I'm intrigued. I know Silence was made into a film awhile back (the early 1970s, I think), but I haven't seen it yet. I read the book almost exactly a year ago, though, and talked about it with linespalsy a bit over in the Reading Tab thread. I'm not sure what to think of someone like Scorsese adapting it; it doesn't seem like the most cinematic story, and I can't tell if his obvious passion for the project has to do with a clear cinematic vision for what it can be, or if it's just an expression of how he feels about the book. Either way, though, I look forward to finding out.

And now I must vacation in the Philippines casino! DAMN BEING BROKE! I WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN!

As for The Silence it is one of my most anticipated films of the year. But second to Age of Ultron.

Can't find this commercial. It seems to have been completely removed from the internet. How is that possible? Damn you, NSA!

Tragic news.

One Dead, Two Injured After Set Collapse on Martin Scorsese's Film 'Silence'
Construction worker killed after ceiling collapses while crews were repairing an unsafe structure on the Taiwan set

One man was killed and two more injured when a structure on the Taiwan set of director Martin Scorsese's upcoming drama Silence collapsed earlier this week. "There was an unfortunate accident at CMPC Studios in Taiwan, where the Martin Scorsese film, Silence, is in pre-production," a spokesperson for the film wrote in a statement to Deadline.

"An existing structure on the CMPC backlot had been deemed unsafe by the production, and accordingly a third-party contractor was hired to reinforce and make it safe prior to any production-related work commencing in this building," the statement continued. "Sadly, during this process, the ceiling collapsed, resulting in the death of one of the contractor’s employees and injuries to two others."

CNN adds that both injured men were hospitalized, one in serious condition. "Everyone is in shock and sorrow and expresses their deepest concern and sympathy to the families of the individual who died and those who were injured," the Silence spokesperson said.

It was not immediately known whether the accident would postpone the production of the film, which is currently scheduled to arrive in 2016. Silence, based on Shūsaku Endō's 1966 novel, stars Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver in a story about the challenges faced by Jesuit missionaries attempting to spread Christianity in 17th century Japan.

"The subject matter is very close to my heart. I've been working on it since I first read the book in 1989," Scorsese told Total Film of Silence. "It goes back to growing up in New York, living in an area that was pretty tough, and also the church at the same time. It's similar to Mean Streets, in a way. It deals with spiritual matters in a concrete, physical world; a world where invariably the worst of human nature is revealed."

Not sure how quickly it'll go into production or where it will put Marty's other projects, but he is now attached to the very high profile adaptation of the non-fiction best seller The Devil in the White City, with Leonardo DiCaprio starring as infamous serial killer H.H. Holmes. Set at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, no word yet on who will play the second lead, architect Daniel Burnham. Screenwriter Billy Ray, who wrote and directed Shattered Glass and Breach and was Oscar nominated for his Captain Phillips script, has tackled the tricky task of adapting this amazing story for the screen.

This will make DiCaprio's sixth collaboration with Scorsese (Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street). Still two more after that before he matches DeNiro's eight.

Interesting. I'm particularly curious to see how/if he'll balance the two big threads of the book. Since they've already cast DiCaprio as Holmes I'm guessing that's where the focus will be (seems like the obvious choice), but as I recall the bulk of the book dealt with Burnham and building the World's Fair.
