Most Overrated Movies

That's messed up, IMO. Regardless of Heath Ledger's death, "The Dark Knight" still stands as a brilliant film. Every actor in that movie put on a great performance (except for maybe Maggie Gyllenhaal, but she wasn't in it too much thankfully) - you've got Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary *effing* Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman - all of these people had a hand in making "The Dark Knight" a great film. In addition, Christopher Nolan wrote an incredible script...

What you're suggesting is, that if Ledger was still with us, then "The Dark Knight" would not be considered a movie of such high caliber; I call bulls**t.

(Sorry for the cursing, it's the passion - nothing personal)
I knew that would be controversial. I do understand your point of view.

I don't know if the film would be considered a higher caliber. I just suspect the Academy, BAFTAs, SAG, Golden Globes etc would have looked like real cold bastards had they not given him those awards - and we can all see in this age of incredible media control and influence, the amount of people who take the word of these awards as gospel. I wasn't necessarily saying it directly affected the view of the film as a whole, just the view of that performance. Not that I'm taking anything away from it - it was brilliant - but people had a hyped up view of it after that - and therefore, more often than not, the movie overall.

But alas, that's just my own opinion. I know there are a ton of people out there who will disagree with me totally.

Well then you and I are at a standstill, but that's okay. I guess I'm just an adamant defender of Christopher Nolan's work

I'm with Skepsis 100% with his view on Heath Ledger and his 'award winning' performance. I even remember seeing the first wheel getting put on that bandwagon, with Caine and Bale both declaring they were going to vote for him as they were members of the Academy. A hugely overrated performance, which blew an already hyped film into an overhyped behemoth.

Absolutely "Big Fsh"...it was so boring!

I'll agree with everything on this list except for No Country For Old Men The rest I found to be O.K movies with Million Dollar Baby being quite badly written and acted in spots. Especially any that involved her family.

No Country for Old Men:
I have issue with investing my time and money into a story that has such a weak payoff. Nowadays, it seems filmmakers and aficionados actually prefer the anti-climax ending, citing it as a welcome change of pace. Others feel the directors are robbing the viewer of their “just desserts.” Personally, all I wanted was the final face-off, so they could finish what they started and instead I get Llewelyn letting his guard down so he could flirt then Anton getting randomly sideswiped. Was Tommy Lee Jones even necessary?

I just have ask, why were you expecting that? There was little to almost no action the entire movie, so while it would've been cool to watch, I just didn't see them doing that.

Bright light. Bright light. Uh oh.
I felt the last part of No Country For Old Men wasn't quite up to the rest, but Tommy Lee Jones was definitely necessary, and in truth, his character is necessary for the title to even make sense. The younger men can "live" in this bizarre world of violence where people are fighting for survival over the money they'll never get to keep or spend in the first place, but the younger men will undoubtedly not live that long in it. Somehow, Tommy Lee's sheriff is able to see the intimate picture of these two other men and Llewelyn's wife without ever having come in contact with either one during the entire movie. When the sheriff recounts his dreams to his wife at the end about his father, it makes some sense of the senseless violence and brings some humanity to the proceedings. The sheriff tells how his father, who was also a sheriff but died long ago at a relatively early age, goes ahead of him on a trail with a horn of warmth to prepare a comfortable spot for his son when the end of his life arrives. His father, just as Llewelyn and probably Chigurgh, never made it to being an old man, but he provides a safe, secure place for his old son in the face of a horrific life and a chilling death.

in my opinion i think scarface is the most overrated movie of all time. its not that i like it or hate it, the movie is ok at best. the movie bombed in the box office then a few rappers made it bigger than its really worth.

Scarface is overrated, keeping in mind that something can be overrated and still be pretty good. According to "The 100 Best Movies Ever Made Mostly Suck" the most overrated movie of all time is Citizen Kane, but I'd personally go with another mob movie, The Godfather (Part 1). Surprisingly slow and boring for the first half, and not all that exciting during the second either. I enjoyed Part 2 a lot more.

Citizen Kane is, by far, the most overrated movie of all time.Sure, the camerawork was influential and all, but the film completely lacks any entertainment value. I'm a believer in the ideal that the best movies are those that blend art AND entertainment; as such, I love Hitchcock movies. Also:

-I did not care for "The Conversation"

-Dr. Strangelove and Raging Bull are both very good, but not quite deserving of all the praise they get.

To me, the Star Wars prequels are kinda overrated. I watched the first two and was terrified by how bad the acting was. And when Liam Neeson patted young Anakin on the shoulder and said: "May the force be with you." I cracked up.. But I would like to watch the old Star Wars movies sometime.

Yeah, and I agree that they are just kinda overrated. They certainly aren't universally loved, that's for sure. I can sit through Sith without too much pain, but Menace and Clones are pretty much unbearable. That said, some sections of Sith are also unbearable, but there are less scenes like that.

Yikes. Kane is tremendously entertaining to me, but each to his own and all that.

The Conversation is ridiculously good. I love that film and have seen it many, many times. Brilliant performance by Hackman as Harry Caul. Such a dense and interesting film.

Same goes for Dr S and Raging Bull, which are seminal classics and deservedly so.
