I don't think the movie is in bad taste simply because it's brutal. As long as the material, regardless of what it is, is handled with the utmost reality, I don't think something can be in bad taste. To me, bad taste is something that blatantly exists only to offend. Hills may offend, and it certainly was intended to engage the audience, but the ways it does are so seamless that no one scene begs for attention. To me, it isn't a "look what we can do!" film, like this recent crop of "torture" horror has been.

Never the less I think its one I will deffinately avoid.

You know what's bad taste? Bambi II.

I hear Bambi's mother comes back as a zombie in that one.

My first post to this forum and it basically highlights the type of film I don't like.

I don't understand this film because I can't grasp the intention of the message within the context it is presented.

Other than being a film which aims to shock and scare there doesn't seem to be anything else there.

Sorry, not my taste at all.

The hills are ALIIIIIIIIIVE! With the sound of murdering...

So, I finally saw it. It was gruesome! One of the bloodiest bloodmobiles to come out in this new generation. And SHOCKING - good shocks. With a lot of heart and cuteness as well. It's very apocolyptic, very 70's, very early 80's. I felt that the narrative was a little shaky at times once the family had broken up - wasn't exactly sure about things when scenes changed - but overall, a good horror movie. I wish I could have understood the relations of all the mutant "hills" people, though. Are they a family? If so, who's what? We know who's what with the Carter family, but I'm not sure how the mutants are connected. What was up with that catepillar-esque mocking mutant in the chair? Talk about ugly. And what about the mutant children? Where did they come from? (and while I'm at it, what possessed the mutant people to wanna do each other to make those children?! Disgusting. Their mannequins were more attractive.)

I give it a B for blood.

As I understood the film, from the photos in the film, the mutants were miners, and miners families that refused to leave or give up there land for the federal government to conduct there nuclear test.
The result was them hiding in the hills during the test, and the survivors being affected by the nuclear fall out.

As for where did the kids come from ? Just my deduction here, but I dont think they raped the girl in the trailer just because she was a pretty face. I think perhaps they have done that before, to carry on the family name.

So, if there is a Hills have eyes 2- will the girl be pregnant with a mutants baby ?

Horror films arent for everyone, some in my mind go over the top in gore, but in reality, they are meant to scare, I think the Hills have eyes did it very well, without going over the top in the gore factor.

I figured that was one way, but I dunno, there might be... more mutants out there in them hills. Female ones.

But I'm still not sure who's who in regards to all the mutant guys we saw in the film.

Well, the remake didn't touch the family ties, which I didn't mind because it still worked wonderfully (though I think it was a needless exclusion), but it is emphasized in the original.

WARNING: "Hills Remake" spoilers below
The owner of the gas station is the father of Pappa Jupiter, who is the guy who attacked Big Bob in the car and the one who gets knocked back by the trailer's explosion). Pappa Jupiter is the father of everyone else (or at least the majority of them). Lizard was the scrawny, more vocal of the main group (the one who falls from the cliff). Pluto was the giant guy who looked like Sloth and rocked the hell out of that axe. Ruby was the girl who helped save the baby and the day. Big Brain was the name of the guy in the chair with the...big brain. And Goggle was the guy who watched them the whole time with his awesome as hell pimp hat, and who Beast killed.

I'm also pretty sure the mutant that was watching TV, stroking the doll's hair was a woman (the mother of the children, I'm guessing).

Sloth is the deformed guy from The Goonies, right? I thought Pluto looked like him too! I figured that one was Pluto because I know who Pluto is from the original (and Hills Have Eyes 2, the one I've seen). I saw the guy who played Pluto at a horror convention and I'm mad that I didn't go meet him now. He has a very freaky look, ya know.

So the guy in the chair is called Big Brain? I didn't realize that was his thing, that he had a big brain.

So, is it likely that there will be a sequel to the remake? I would love to see it. I wanna go see the remake again. I still need to know who was watching the survivors through those high tech binoculars. The Hills Still Have Eyes!

this movie was nothing what i expected it to be. it was boring. i didn't understand the point of it. definately gets a big thumbs down

what did you all think about this movie? i saw it on tv the other day for the first time in a while, and i had so many thoughts going through my head lol. it is a wild one

The remake is actually one of the few newer horror flicks I liked. I think it is actually a bit more effective than the original. I didn't expect to like it, after seeing crap like Saw and Hostel lower the bar to abysmal lows.

I watched the remake of Part II, as well. That was a ham-fisted piece of garbage.

I agree with most of your post. I normally prefer to side with the originals, yet I thought the original was surprisingly quite inferior to the remake. The remake took everything that was good about the original and turned it up a notch. Though, I suppose the complaints about the remake being hard to take in aren't for nothing; it's only for those with strong stomachs.

...but, you say that you didn't expect to like it after crap like Saw and Hostel lowered the bar. I have no objection with the latter, but I thought that the original Saw was pretty damn riveting. An example that there's still hope for the horror genre. The gruesome reputation that follows it is tacked on for the most part by a bunch of grizzly sequels lowering the quality and individuality of the original.

I liked both of these movies

I preffered the first remake to the 2nd film but they are both good horror films. There was on scene in the 2nd movie that made me cringe and it was the rape scene it was brutal, but in a horror you expect to be shocked and I was shocked at this scene.
