But though the film's sparse dialogue may have been a pragmatic, logistical decision, the result is a film that feels like an eerie hybrid between two types of films.

It helps that the movie fulfills those desires at just the right times such as when Allan lends a helping hand to inflicted daughter Lone or when he consults the vampire guide for more instructions.

But even if the film doesn't really try to answer its own questions, what really stands out is the imagery that Dreyer presents; from the sickled silhouette that adorns most of the film's promotional pictures, to the images of ghastly soldiers and people marching or dancing; death is everywhere.
