With me, for the most part, it depends on the movie(s) that I watch. There are several older classics, such as French Connection, Dirty Harry, Lawrence of Arabia and Dr. Zhivago and Wizard of Oz that I've seen more than once. However, with West Side Story, it's a different matter. I've probably seen it close to 40 times, both in movie theatres and when it's been aired on TV. WSS came to the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA, and I attended both the afternoon and the evening screenings. I admittedly almost never miss a screening of the film West Side Story when it comes to my area. The one exception was seven years ago last March, when an afternoon screening of WSS conflicted directly with my late dad's memorial, so I didn't go that day. I also count the number of times that I've driven into neighboring states to see this great film--- Twice to NYC. Providence, Albany (NY), and even New Hampshire.

Welcome to the human race...
Most movies I just watch once. The rest, I've usually seen anywhere between three and twelve times. There are only a handful I've seen more than twelve times.

The average movie I only watch once unless I see it on TV and I'm bored and there's nothing else on.

Movies I really love and buy on DVD I will watch over. If any friends of mine are over and they haven't seen it I'll play it again with them.

Something like Star Wars, or Star Trek I've see a rediculous amount of times. I couldn't even begin to count.

Most films I watch only once...even if it's a really good film, I rarely get the urge to see it again. I know a few people here do that, watch a film right after they've finished watching it. I can't say I understand why, even though I imagine it would give you more insight and a better, more objective assessment of its quality. But I'm not sure I want that, I like the first viewing, when you don't know what you're getting yourself into and you end up being completely immersed and won over by a film. You can't replicate that exhilarating feeling (especially not right after you've seen it) so why ruin it?
Not only that but I feel that there are just far too many great films out there I haven't managed to see yet so I don't want to "waste" my time re-living stories I've already gone through. Maybe once I manage to see most films I plan on seeing I'll start re-watching all those great films I've seen without feeling like I'm wasting valuable time...

There are certain films which I did see again not long after the first viewing. The only times I did that in the theater was with the LOTR trilogy, and not so much that I had a burning desire to see them all again, but because it just so happened that I went to see them with various members of my family who hadn't seen it yet and didn't want to go alone, so I went along.

I think the film I watched the most would be Pulp fiction, again, not so much by personal choice. It's just been shown on TV more times than any other film I know and I kinda leave it on. But I don't think I've seen it more than 10 times. I can't for the life of me imagine seeing a film 40 or more times like some people here have....

Usually I go a year or more between viewings, but there are some films that I watch whenever I run across them. Like during a trip to South Africa via New York that I started early one morning in Houston and ended bleery-eyed in the early morning hours of the third day in Johannesburg. I was in my room getting ready for bed, too tired even to order room service, turned on my TV just in time to catch the start of a commercial-free showing of Citizen Kane and ended up watching the whole thing again. Each Christmas season I watch Albert Finney in the musical Scrooge just to renew my faith in the power of redemption and good will, and The Muppets' Christmas Carol just to get me ho-ho-hoing with the Christmas spirit. Then there are other films that I visit again like old friends, often the result of chance encounters or nostalgia or to introduce them to someone who hasn't yet met them. I'm on a mission to improve my grandkids' tastes in movies.

It also depends on the movie for me. Usually if it isn't total **** I will watch it at least twice.

I am half agony, half hope.
I'll get a little obsessive/compulsive when I find a film I love. I've seen some more times than I can count, and I'll watch them whenever they're on because they're old friends. I like the familiarity, I know the dialogue, I overlook their faults.

Hi, Mrs. Darcy. I'm fairly new here on this forum, but I can identify with you totally in that respect. My username on this forum says it all, if one gets the drift.

I've seen some films more than I'd like to admit. I've seen some of my Top 10 literally 100 times or more...

Just once most of the time. Even my favourite films i've only watch between 2-5 times...at most a dozen. Because sadly...I don't own most of my favourites. Saw them once on rental...and that was all.

I don't even own a DVD player, much less the movies, including my alltime favorite, that I love. I like to wait 'til they come back to a repertory movie theatre in our area, or, even when they get aired on TV, I'll watch them.

ok...WSSlover? How did you manage to watch West Side Story over and over without a DVD player? VHS?

anyway, I rent movies once. the only thing I buy are tv dvd sets, and them less now that I can watch 'em online! I'll watch something over if someone else hasnt seen it and they are watching it, but even then I try to avoid it. The only thing I want to see again is MAYBE another version of the same thing (e.g. I Am Legend). Whats worse - if I see a horrible flawed copy (dont ask! ) of a movie I really want to see and enjoyed - I still dont want to see the better version after that.

Not even in hotels. I will watch the ceiling before I re-watch a movie. Unless its anything I watched as a child, which movies hold a special place in my heart. Adventures in Babysitting, The Golden Child, Big Shots, anything Chipmunk from the 80s, etc.

Well, mack, I keep my eyes on the Arts/Movie Section of our area's local newspapers, cruise on google periodically, and enter the websites of the two repertory movie theatres that're left in our area. Also, I keep an eye on the TV section of the Sunday issue of our biggest, most prominent local newspaper for airings of WSS on the Turner Classic Movie Channel, or even on Channel 44 in our area. Cruising on google and the Official West Side Story website is how I've found out of state screenings of WSS, too.

When I had an older, smaller TV that was more than 10 years old, I'd go out to the Hollywood Express nearest to where I live, (which is now gone), and rent a VCR and a video of West Side Story when I was really itching to see it and there were no scheduled screenings of it coming up in the near future. It worked for awhile, but one day, my 13-year-old TV totally went on the fritz, which I discovered the hard way, when I set up a rented VCR and WSS video, and the TV didn't even turn on. Then I knew that my little old 20" TV that had served me faithfully for so many years after I'd gotten it as a birthday present, was gone and needed to be replaced.

So, that's how I get to watch WSS over and over again without a DVD player or VCR.

Depends. Usually in theaters then the day of the DVD release. But if i really like a film i'll see it twice or maybe 3 or 4 times in theater (No Country for Old Men) and watch it plenty of times on DVD. And some films i'll watch once in theater because it looked good then never think of it again (AVP-R)

In the Beginning...
For me, it usually has to do with some freakish, invisible, inexplicable force of nature. Some of the films in my Top 10 I've only seen once or twice, while other films I find to be pretty mediocre I can't get enough of. Here lately, I've been devouring Master and Commander like mad. I think it has to do with what I'm craving at any given time.
