Introduction - Recomendations for a serious movie

Tools

Hullo,

Today is the last day of school, and am actually home sick, and my mom is going out later today by Blockbuster to get me a movie. Unfortunatly, I can't think of any.

I'm looking for a serious movie, such as Star Wars Episode III, Harry Potter IV, Blackhawk Down, Tears of the Sun, Saints & Soldiers, Band of Brothers, We Were Soldiers (The ending was extremely sad, but my favorite part of the movie), King Arthur, The Lord of the Rings, and The Matrix.

The one's listed are what I've seen, and wouldn't mind renting them again, but would like to see another, because I know all of the listed above very well.

So, if you know any that are similar like that, must be serious, would be nice to mess with your emotions, would be great. I'd prefer they not be rated R, or atleast not have alot of suggestive stuff such as sounds and movements. Witty references once or twice are ok. The most extreme would probably be in Tears of the Sun when a boob is seen for about half a second.

Thanks.

I'm such a simple creature but did you like Batman Begins? That's what I thought of when I read your current list. Sorry if I was off.

Well...not sure what you mean by serious.... You list intense films like Black Hawk Down, but then fluff like Star Wars and Harry Potter, which don't come across as very serious to me. I will give it a shot, tho...

Hmmmm...no r rating....

Ack!

The Patriot
The Aviator
The Thin Red Line

I am so confused.

Even so, give an older classic a try. I suggest The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948 - John Huston), The Man Who Would Be King (1975 - John Huston), Casablanca (1943 - Michael Curtiz), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957 - David Lean), Notorious (1946 - Alfred Hitchcock), North by Northwest (1959 - Alfred Hitchcock), Stalag 17 (1953 - Billy Wilder), The Great Escape (1963 - John Sturges), The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (1973 & 1974 - Richard Lester), The Crimson Pirate (1952 - Robert Siodmak), The Professionals (1966 - Richard Brooks) or The Roaring Twenties (1939 - Raoul Walsh). Even frippin' Blockbuster should have a couple of those.

Now I feel better... cause I thought the confusion was only in me.

The Fabulous Sausage Man
What on earth is "serious" about Star Wars Episode III, Harry Potter IV, The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix or - bloody hell - King Arthur?

Serious, as in it's not comedy, and there's very little witty comments in. As in it's got a "darker" theme to it.

In Harry Potter IV, I don't find the scene where the Death Eaters burn the tents, mimicking the KKK in looks, was a funny scene. Nor where Harry faces off with Lord Voldemort face to face.

In Star Wars Episode III, where Anakin believes Padme his love betrayed him. Then the whole lightsaber battle at the end. I didn't find any of that humorous. I found it dark, and exciting.

We Were Soldiers is actually a bad example, there was a quite a bit of humor in the begining which is what I don't want. And it wasn't all that dark.

I guess, dark, serious, and mature would describe it all together better.

Standing in the Sunlight, Laughing
Reading your list, this popped into my head:

It's about a young english boy who gets separated from his parents when the Japanese army invades the town he's in during World War 2. Very serious, messes with your emotions and some first rate work by a 14 year old Christian Bale. Also stars John Malkovich and Miranda Richardson.

Oh, and welcome to MoFo!

if you like anime, Grave of the Fireflys is the most serious (and extremely depressing) movie i can think of.

EDIT: on second thought, i noticed a lot of the movies you named are more action than drama, so you might not like that movie...

I can't think of any movies at the moment that lack sound and movement, but I'll keep trying. In the meantime, welcome to Mofo .

Since when does humorless necessarily equal serious? Hell, even Schindler's List has one good laugh in it.

Whatever. I hope you find something that quality of The Matrix.

Posts schmost!
Are you left more confused than before you started to read my posts?
Sorry about that, (well maybe not) but it does sadden me a little. Just picture me in a lil’ pink tutu and a bright red helmet, writing my name on the wall with poo and it’s all good in your hood.

i like not knowing whats going on... cause i never know what im saying either... as long as i know the other person is having fun with me, everything is good in my hood.

I wipe my ass with your feelings
The word you're looking for is "Drama".

Or thriller.

But more drama than anything.

Or thriller.

THRILLER!

edit: WAIT! Why not a hybrid?

The Dramatic Thriller!!!

Forgot me recommendation:

12 Angry Men

When i read your list the movies that popped into my head were
Boyz in the Hood
Menace II Society
Juice
and any other similiar movies

except only a half a second of boobys is acceptable.

It can't rain all the time
How about Bladerunner, Leon or The Terminator films?

Put me in your pocket...
Welcome to MoFo Adam.

Here's a couple you might like, if you haven't seen them yet. My daughter likes all of the movies you've listed and liked these as well.

The Count of Monte Cristo(2002)...betrayl and revenge, great story.

National Treasure(2004)...constant action/race against time, like a few other movies you've listed.

And Then There Were None (1945)...murder/whodunnit. Excellent cast.

It's a little hard to suggest a movie when we haven't known you for long and don't know what you've already seen. I hope our suggestions have helped though.

I keep forgetting about these. I need to rent these again. This past month I got my daughter hooked on The Count of Monte Cristo ('revenge is sooo awesome!'), so maybe I can get her to like those as well. Thanks for the list Holden.
