Musicals! Musicals! Musicals!

I have a feeling Noir will be a popular option. War. Musicals. One possibility I’d also like to throw out there is a 10th anniversary edition for the 90’s. Obviously, there’s a preference for sticking with the genre-decades rotation, so genre would be the next countdown, I presume.
Obviously options to discuss when the actual poll goes up.

I am a pretty big fan of Anderson. I think Tanenbaums, Rushmore, Isle of Dogs, half of Moonrise Kingdom and Fantastic Mr Fox are all either borderline masterpieces or at least spectacularly wonderful. I also think all of his films are worth watching, and all have their little moments of brilliance.


I also sort of understand why people think Budapest is his best (although I don't quite understand what it is that has brought usual haters of him on board). Which makes it all the more confusing that I would likely place it near the bottom of his filmography.


I don't actually know what it does differently that makes it so it never captures me like so many of his other films do. It looks like them, feels like them and in many ways is him at the peak of his powers in making his little tableaux lives appear completely exquisite on screen.


Maybe it's just burnout. While I don't think he does the same movie over and over as so many criticize, i think his signature style is just so....rigid....it sometimes feels like the same set up and the same characters and the same jokes over and over


But it's not like I can actually think of anything thst doesn't work on this particular movie. But I really am fairly lukewarm on it

I had forgotten that the top 2 films are revealed simultaneously. This means I'm posting three misses from my ballot today instead of two.

#8 - Marshland (2014)

A bleak thriller from Spain that reminds me of the first season of True Detective. For some reason, Spanish seems to excel in this genre.

#7 - Monsters (2010)

A slow-burn science-fiction drama that does wonders with its $500k budget.

#6 - The Blackcoat's Daughter (2017)

What an amazing debut from Oz Perkins. A slow and atmospheric horror.

Like most movies I watch, it was from reading about it here. May have been you now that I think of it.

I agree about The Blackcoat's Daughter. Great film.

As for Monsters, it took a second round with it for it to sink in for me, but I thought it was pretty solid. Not close to being on my list, but still good.

It's good to see these four mentioned, especially Magical Girl, which I really enjoyed when it was brought up in a HoF last year.

Killer Joe was a crazy film. One of the most hysterically baffling and bizarre last acts ever.

Three solid ones. Piranha 3D was an absolute hoot.

I knew The Grand Budapest Hotel would make the list. What a delicious romp!! Who knew Ralph Fiennes was a such a marvelous comic actor? This is my favorite Wes Anderson.
