Watching Movies Alone with crumbsroom

I was very pleased with it overall.

American Beauty and Braveheart were probably my least favorite films which appeared on the list.

However, there were also a number of great films which I was happy to see on the list. I was especially glad that Come and See and The Tree of Life made it as they're both in my top 10 and I didn't expect for them to make the list at first. I was also happy to see Harold and Maude make the list. There's still some stuff on the list I haven't seen, but I plan to watch them this year.
I couldn’t get into Tree of Life. It was ok, but I found it meandered far too often. It was beautiful to watch though.
I felt, after expressing my disappointment with it here, that there was something wrong with me because it seemed like something I should have liked but for some reason it just didn’t connect. One of these days, I’ll have to give it another chance.
Tree of Life has a lot of fans here I’ve learned

It took me some time to warm up to it as well, but I now think it's pretty untouchable. Yes, it meanders, but since Malick's direction is so great, I didn't mind the pacing and I'd be happy to see more of the film. I haven't seen the 3 hour cut, but I want to someday.

Regardless, I highly recommend giving it another viewing. You may like it more.

Yeah, it’s very possible it may improve upon a second viewing. Herzog films are that way.

The inclusion of Come and See, Stalker, and Andre Rublev, Harold and Maude and Paris, Texas definitely have me even more interested in watching those.

A system of cells interlinked
Anyone else get a sinking feeling when they look at other threads that aren’t from RT/Corrie holdovers? Seeing the most trite and soul sucking takes about feminism and no men liking movies to a degree that makes you feel like you wandered into a bodybuilding message board for insecure men that stopped their education just short of high school and it robs all interest in interacting with much of the other posters?

Just checking in.
If you want to talk about sinking feelings, try moderating that thread. Luckily, Yoda is handling that duty so far, so I can avoid it altogether, which is the proper way to approach it, IMO.

Sorry you've gotten a bad taste in your mouth about this most excellent community - I assure you, the type of people that are posting idiocy in that thread are a definite minority here.

Maybe check out some of the Director Appreciation threads post by Holden? Lots of great stuff in those.

Stalker and Andrei Rublev ae my favorite Tarkovsky films. The Mirror and Solaris aren't too far behind though. He's produced a bunch of great films. I also love Paris, Texas.

As someone that didn't submit a list (I find such a prospect too daunting in the face of my current responsibilities. Maybe when stuff dies down in the summer, I can try and cobble one together to hold me over), I think it's decent if fairly traditional to online communities. Check out the overlap between Reddit's top 100, IMDB's top 100 and this one.

There's a large degree of overlap and a heavy emphasis on American heavy hitters with a smattering of iconic classics and mandatory classics, with few deep cuts into genre or "art cinema."

But I like to love everything on the list so there's not a lot to complain about. It's a solid, unsurprising list of good to great movies. I can dig it.

Overall, it's a solid list. After all, it's supposed to be a representation of the collective tastes of a community, so there's no "wrong" in it.

But if we were to get in the nitty-gritty, these are some films that I didn't like that made it anyway...

80. West Side Story (79 points)
69. American History X (89 points)
65. Forrest Gump (94 points)
39. Spirited Away (130 points)
24. The Matrix (178 points)

But once again, other than American History X, which I consider a fairly irrelevant film, I know I'm in the minority with the others so I have no issues with them coming up.

I can imagine. I'd go ban happy and straight to iron fist dictating. Cheers for y'all in your mature handling of it.

I'll try and track down those threads. If they're in GD, I'll probably find em fast. Outside of that... We shall see

I'm so used to seeing Forrest Gump on these lists I forgot that I rewatched it and had a viscerally negative reaction to it. I guess that's one on it I don't care for.

There were a few I had issues with being in there:

Dazed and Confused
Rocky (probably the only film I actually dislike)
Fight Club
The Big Lebowski (there are better Coens films that could have made it and Fargo is not one of them)

80. West Side Story (79 points)
That's it. We're no longer friends.

69. American History X (89 points)
65. Forrest Gump (94 points)
Never mind. We're on good terms again.

39. Spirited Away (130 points)
Or not.

24. The Matrix (178 points)
Well, I like it well enough, but I don't love it, so shrugs. Okay, fine. I'll add you back to my friends list.

Rocky (probably the only film I actually dislike)

*screams out for the consoling arms of Adrian, but only finds the stubby arms of Burt Young to collapse into*

"But I went the distance...I went...the...distance"

These words are muffled against the chest of Burt Young as he takes an uncaring swig from his flask. No one hears them. I am alone with nothing but the smell of his armpit musk.

*dies*

Lol. That was funny.*
How about you, though? What films were you hoping to see more of?

Wait, are you saying your force your female friends to watch porn with you? Does your depravity know no bounds, Rock???
Nobody is forced to watch anything. I cannot help if people look while it's playing on all the TVs.

But seriously, is that a thing people do?!?

Regarding the top 100, plenty of movies I like or love, a few that I don't but understand their popularity, happy that my vote for Suspiria paid off even if some of my other long shots didn't work out.

Yeah, there weren’t many surprises by Suspiria was a pleasant one.

Oh, man

To be fair, most of those, I haven't seen in 10, 20 years. Maybe more.

Here are a couple from Mr. Pike. If these aren't to your liking, just search for "Appreciation" using the site's search function, and a few pages of threads will list out.

Scorsese, Super Genus

Clint Eastwood

Herzog

Yes, Rock. It's a thing. And it's extremely prevalent with American young men.
