Is this still going?

So far I've been out, seen the doctor, come home and ShopkeeperTriumph and his pals are still yapping on this thread
"ShopkeeperTriumph and his pals" sound like a great name for a Saturday morning cartoon.

I think these two posts sum up some of the problems of the past couple days.

IMDb has a reputation. I never used IMDb as it was packed with trolls... or people simply there to pick fights.

From what Dani has said in that post I've quoted, and also what some of the others said at the very start... the IMDb guys have come across to MoFo, and seem to be expecting trouble... I think being on IMDb, dealing with the trolls and plebs on there, they haven't expected much difference from MoFo.
So when someone says something as a joke, or they see a thread like this, they take it as hostile, or as someone taking the micky out of the new members.

Guys, MoFo is a relaxed, fun and friendly place.
Sure, there can be the odd disagreement, misunderstanding, maybe even a full on fight between members... but rest assured... trolls and the like are not welcome here.
Trolling, piss taking out of the new people, whoever they are, is not something MoFos do.
We have banter... but we're not the types of dingleberries you'd find on larger and un-moderated sites like IMDb.
This IS the reason, yes. And just viewing IMDB as an outsider isn't enough--you have to be down IN the cesspit as a member long enough to fully understand it.
What you said pretty much hits the nail on the head. I can't speak for Dani, but for myself, I've had the following happen to me on IMDB:

-People impersonated me with copycat accounts
-People stalked me in my PM inbox
-Six people threatened to kill me
-Callout threads with my name in it on a weekly basis with libel against me
-People spreading libel about me via youtube and posting it on the board
-People threatened to sodomize me
-People threatening to find my personal info and spread it all over the board
-People threatening to find my info and fly out to "deal with" me
-People telling me that they hope my immigrant wife is deported
-Racism
-Xenophobia
-A person threatening to burn my face
-People harassing me about the fact that I'm in an interracial marriage
-People wishing death on my entire family

And that's only the tip of the iceberg.

As for Dani, she's a friend of mine on IMDB and she's been stalked and harassed as well for doing nothing more than liking a show that someone else hates.

So, yes--we're on edge. You guys CAN'T understand what we're going through unless you've been active IMDB members for a sizeable amount of time.

And, to that the respect, we can't understand YOUR board's personality either until we're here a while. In other words--there will be an adjustment period.

I tried IMDb for about 2 hours. That was enough

Rest assured though... if someone on here is seeming like they're having a dig... for instance how Iroquois and I do at each other... it's just banter.
At least I think Iro is just having banter hehehehe!

MoFo isn't a malicious site. We're more like a circle of friends, as you might spot by some of the threads going round like "Top MoFos" and the MoFies Awards that we hold each New Year.
The MoFies are like a collective pat on the back from one another... and it's all done in good humour.

I totally get what you guys are going through though as I said, I tried IMDb's boards and immediately knew what it was all about and I never went back.
But I can't imagine having to deal with all the plebs, daily, weekly, monthly, for as long as you did.

MoFo is safe, and trolls, if they do find the site, don't last long before they get a total ban from the owner.
One thing that might put your mind at ease, is that the Mods actually have inside competitions as to how fast they can ban a spammer.
I think the record is 2 seconds from them joining the site

All I can really say is, sit back, relax, take it as banter and light hearted fun.... and not as malicious trolling or subtle digging with serious undertones.

What I don't understand is, if the IMDb boards were that bad, why did it take them closing down for all of you to find somewhere else to go?

I was on another movie forum before I came here. I was there for maybe a couple of months. I didn't like the atmosphere and never felt like I was part of a community, so I went looking elsewhere and found this place. That was 7.5 years ago.

Yeah, I've wondered that myself. I think in some cases people just might not realize that forums can vary that much: that maybe this is just how they are, since so much of the Internet is a swamp. From there, I imagine it's easy to settle in a little, to the point where it's too daunting to not just stop, but to convince all your friends to go, too, which means you'd put up with it just to keep talking to those same friends.

Or, as Raskolnikov put it: "Man gets used to everything, the scoundrel!"

Honestly? I can only speak for myself, but it had THE most traffic and THE widest vairety of boards. Maybe I want to talk about Batman v Superman...maybe I want to talk about Escape From the Planet of the Apes, maybe I want to talk about Whit Bissell. imdb, warts and all....had boards for each of those. That was it's plus AND its minus. That many boards meant effective moderation was an impossibility.

Plus, sometimes I enjoy (most times) fighting for what is "right" against the moronic buffoons that litter those boards. Before Batman v Superman was a twinkle in WBs eye, I was on the Cosby boards giving what-for to those buffoons who tried to blame the victims. That kind of thing.

It's not the noblest of reasons, but it's an honest one.

Is this still going?

So far I've been out, seen the doctor, come home and OdumC and his pals are still yapping on this thread
Oh sorry, didn't know.. which threads are for conversation?

Hey now, this thread is for cruelly tricking newbies into thinking they're loved.
It's Catfish: The Thread.

But doing that is so hostile.
I'd rather be loved in a hostile fashion than in a Hostel fashion.....

I can kind of understand that, but you don't really need entire boards dedicated to one movie to have engaging discussion or even just fun fights. Threads work just as well.

You seem fairly level headed, but some of the people come in here like they've got PTSD and are in need of serious therapy. It's just the internet, not Gitmo or something.

A few of them mentioned that people had gotten video death threats and had their personal information plastered online, which is a step beyond the normal Internet stuff that can/should be shrugged off. Not sure how prevalent that was, though.

Sometimes I see topics or trains of thought that I never thought of and find engaging. And I'm not one of those "every stray thought is SO important I need to create a thread for it" types so I like getting others input.

You seem fairly level headed
No, I'm an ass-hat.

but some of the people come in here like they've got PTSD and are in need of serious therapy. It's just the internet, not Gitmo or something.
You are closer to the actual truth than you know with the PTSD comment. And like Yoda said, you get ...entrenched and don't want to leave the fight unfinished. Which is why imdb shutting down the boards is a wonderful thing. An end is being forced upon us and we can get back to ENJOYING message boards again.

A few of them mentioned that people had gotten video death threats and had their personal information plastered online, which is a step beyond the normal Internet stuff that can/should be shrugged off. Not sure how prevalent that was, though.
Prevalent? no. But when it gets done, it's all the more alarming.

As an example, one of the people who made more than one death threat announced he's supposedly one of the people behind the design of the imdb v2 boards. Now, even before learning that, I and others had tried to warn people that going over to a board that suddenly crops up and you don't know the admins of and giving over your basic info and ip address is...ill-advised in today's world. remember, most of the people going over there were the types of people that were part of the reason those boards shut down. So really, I have no skin in the game if they fall into a sarlaac pit of doxxing. It just seemed like the right thing to do to remind them that there's no such thing as a free lunch (I am mixing my metaphors like a ninja blender today!). Now you find out one of the people designing this board is a well-known unhinged person? That's an invitation no one should accept.

But they will. Because they are desperate for another umoderated world where they can continue to engage in hate-speak and racism.

Hey now, this thread is for cruelly tricking newbies into thinking they're loved.
I won't lie, I saw the thread title and said "Oh boy... HERE we go..." (There's a couple "OdumC" threads running right NOW on imdb... one of them by someone who vanished a year or more back, heard the boards were shutting down and popped back JUST to make ME a call out thread...lol)

What can I say.. I'm a people person.

What a prude.. I'll bet your safe word is "Martha"
WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME!!!!!

A few of them mentioned that people had gotten video death threats and had their personal information plastered online, which is a step beyond the normal Internet stuff that can/should be shrugged off. Not sure how prevalent that was, though.
Yeah like I told you yesterday, a lot of it boils down to stubbornness too, When my info was doxed one of them actually sent me a pm from a sock with all my info and a warning "Leave or it gets posted everywhere" (Which as disturbing as it was also made me laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of someone trying to "blackmail" me...)

Well Like I've shown, I won't be bullied away from anywhere, that actually makes me more determined to stay just to tick off the toolbag.

And while usually the ideal solution was to just toss them on ignore and let them stew in their own venom, that wasn't really effective there where they could get a new sock on in minutes.

Someone should tell you about Etrata some time.. If I told it, nobody would believe it.

And like Yoda said, you get ...entrenched and don't want to leave the fight unfinished. Which is why imdb shutting down the boards is a wonderful thing. An end is being forced upon us and we can get back to ENJOYING message boards again.
I said that to Yoda in PM's yesterday... them shutting down the boards was the push we needed to finally leave, with them still up people would just think it too big of a pain to gather a good group, find a place, bail out...And with them still up, people would still be visiting them because its habit... while with it shutting down, no choice.
